Fulhamification - A Progress Report II
I am (seriously) attempting to be even-handed here. I understand that my previous postings on this subject may make some of you take that with a pinch of salt. But let me explain....
I will happily state that the stadium looks better these days. However I still do wonder at what cost. And, on the point, the Marketing Department still continues to grow in what appears to this poster to be in an unchecked manner. I believe it now comprises FOUR full-time members of staff. The latest being a recruit from....wait for it.....Fulham's Marketing department.
If I saw material commercial benefits from this marketing department then I would cut them a lot of slack. However there has been no material impact on attendances. no discernible growth in the average home attendance, and no growth in season ticket holders that reflects the "over investment" our CEO has decided to make in Marketing. What is more, the new stadium now requires 3,000 fewer new season ticket holders - yet we are employing MORE marketers from Fulham.
I am more than happy to have a sensible debate here on this subject. Especially with the CEO admitting that he is "over investing" in this area - only then to employ another member of staff. For full disclosure, my sources tell me that increasing in Marketing staff are often tied to increases in other departments. For example, if another non-playing department needs an additional employee then Marketing will only agree to it if they also get a similar uplift. This sounds like complete bonkers to me, or complete bullshit (I say that because it is difficult to believe a commercial operation such as BFC can subject itself to what would seem to be what would otherwise be called "blackmail" from a senior manager) Nevertheless we now have twice as many full-time employees in Marketing than we do in, say, Commercial.
So in a time when we are told all available funds should be made available to the first team (yep I agree), and that Sir Peter of G is not allowed to read out the teams before Marketing deem is optimal, we have an over-funded (cf. Mark Devlin) Marketing team that insists on subjecting us the Fulham colours in our badges and marketing material (apologies, couldn't resist!)
Happy to hear your thoughts.
