Gary Neville

Surprised there’s not a thread on him already given he’s the country’s most high profile pundit and is pretty outspoken.

Anyway here’s a clip of his podcast where he talks about Brentford. Superficially it sounds pretty complimentary, but if you break down what he says it’s basically a condescending “Arsenal were terrible, Brentford just kept things simple and their spirit carried them through. Brentford will struggle with lack of quality but might stay up if they keep up the spirit”

I don’t think there’s a lot wrong with what he said. He and Jamie Charrager were very complimentary about us on Sky and loved every minute of the occasion
Realistically our aim is to stay up and he believes we can do this.
A brilliant start last Friday but a long way to go.

Gary Neville

I watched the whole post match coverage when I got home, and he was very complimentary toward us. Said that we weren't just good at one thing like many promoted clubs, but were really strong at lots of different things and it was really impressive.

I watched the game back, and our approach is what will give us an edge in this division but there also was a lack of quality there in terms of being able to create chances. We made it hard for them without creating lots of chances. Jensen and Wissa should help there but we absolutely had the right approach for that game.

Gary Neville

I would have to agree with him, we are going to hover just above the bottom places if we are lucky. Friday was a great night, but arsenal played through us at will at times. Other teams will have the firepower to go with their approach play and things could be a lot different.its a great three points and the quicker we can get ten wins on the board the Better. He loved that game along with carra you could tell and why wouldn’t he?

The next 3 games will be more of an indication as to where we are likely to end up. If we are to stay clear of the relegation places then we should be looking at a minimum of 4 points from them.
I see no reason to be pessimistic. There are enough beatable sides where we should gather sufficient points to be comfortable.

"... don't have the quality"

FFS, there were 5 internationals on the pitch and 6 on the bench. I mean, have a look at Palace"s team they're planning to put out against us

I don't think the amount of internationals is an indicator, as that depends on the quality of the international side itself.

Gary Neville

They are fair comments based on what they saw on Friday. However that game was only the start of the learning curve for all our squad (particularly those new to English football) on what you need to do to compete in the EPL. With as good as zero experience in this league it will take at least half a dozen games to get up to speed with the power and pace of this league and how to play against top class players. We will get better I am sure, which makes last Friday's performance so impressive.

Gary Neville

It's a fair point, which I edited out to avoid using the term "Mickey Mouse"

Gary Neville

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. If he means we are missing the eye catching star quality of someone like Benrahma then I would have to agree with him. We don't (as yet) have that player but Wissa looks more a box of tricks than I first thought if you look at his videos.
Agree that Jensen will get commentators purring because he has that effortless glide.

I thought Gary Neville was brilliant on Friday night .. he was having banter with the crowd in front of him .. he was filming the Hey Jude singing at the final whistle and I think he’s a very good pundit and knows what he’s talking about!
The Sky coverage of the match was fantastic it has to be said ??

Gary Neville

I have just watched the game again (for the 3rd time!) and I think his summary is spot on.
Great time to play Arsenal, with us on a high, full stadium and Arsenal's best two goalscorers unwell.

Despite all of that, Arsenal had more shots on goal in 90 mins than any other game Arteta has managed. They dominated us on possession and pass accuracy too. We deserved the win, no doubting that, but if our pass accuracy is that low (66%) in other games and possession (about 30 odd per cent) is similar, lots of teams will steamroller us. Others pointed out how easily Arsenal cut through our midfield and they're right. Last season's record-breaking championship striker did not have a shot on goal all game.

We will get better as we adapt to the PL, but equally, sides will do their HW on us. Quality is all relative and the reality is that most PL sides will have more than us - that's where the home crowd and 'promotion' effect can help. Easy to do when we're winning like Friday, but there will be plenty of games not like that.

One last point - the pace of the game surprised me a bit - breakneck speed. I had thought the PL was less frenetic that the Championship. I watched highlights of the PO final back last night and we had much more time and space in that game than Friday night. I expect us to beat the drop, but we'll need to be consistently better than Friday.

Gary Neville

He is one of the very few pundits if not only one that I bother to listen to as he doesn't tend to say things for the sake of provoking an argument as lots seem to nowadays. Was interested to hear what he had say when I watched the recording back and thought he was very honest in everything that he said both pre and post match.

Gary Neville

Based on that performance his comment about quality is reasonable, but I think there is more to come in that regard, even from the 11 that played.

The emphasis Friday was on being ultra-competitive, high energy and intensity, and physical, in their faces. Passing and possession quality suffered a bit as a consequence, but against other opponents I think (hope) it will be more evident. Palace will be very interesting in this regard. And then of course there are those who didn't play.

I think it’s swings and roundabouts though and each game will be bloody difficult and have different challenges.

The Arsenal side was young and naive and had a soft underbelly (like they’ve had for years) but, as you rightly say, played through us with relative ease at times… however, whilst, most of the teams in the premier league won’t have that same naivety or fragility for us to exploit, I also don’t think many will have the technical ability to dominate possession in the same way nor play through us with ease either and there aren’t that many, likely, bottom half teams who have strikers that are clinical.

With the exception of the top 6-8 all teams have strengths and weaknesses and we are no different and could finish anywhere from 12th to 20th.

Can’t wait!

The games against the teams who are considered relegation candidates will certainly be this. The likes of Norwich, Palace, Brighton etc will view us as such.
I think you can view the Prem as almost 3 overlapping leagues of 8. Any points gained against the top are a bonus, the middle you need to pick up a fair few, the other 7 at the bottom is where your fate is decided.
So only having 30 odd % against Arsenal doesn’t bother me nor that they broke through a few times. What else did we expect?

Not going all Kevin Kegan but I just love if we (Bees) beat Man Utd ?

It was just a silly joke. I think most of us have a good idea of the little leagues inside the EPL and where we will probably sit.

The stats don't measure heart and passion. Arsenal were like the lion out of the wizard of oz.

I've got us down as finishing 12th although I admit it's an optimistic but also a realistic outlook.

Most people know it will be very hard to compete against the top 4 or even top 6 or 8 teams but every game starts nil nil and its 11 v 11 so anything can happen. If you don't believe you can win, there's no point turning up. (Unless you just want a day out) Is there?.

Of course not, but heart and passion only get you so far. It's for this reason lower league clubs manage a giant killing or two each year, but never win the cup. A similar thing will apply to us this season.

I thought one pundit put it quite well. To paraphrase, he said something like to bridge the gap, Brentford have to be at 95-100% for the vast majority of their games to get 40+ points. Teams with more quality can put in 70% performances and continue to get wins.

I think the 70% rule applies to the top 8 or maybe 10 teams though.

Let's play Brighton, Burnley, Palace, Southampton, Norwich, Watford, Newcastle and even Villa at 70% and see who wins?

We also have a bit more quality about us than some give us credit for.

Gary Neville

Neville is by far and away the best football pundit on tv. He’s intelligent, passionate and articulate and comments without bias. Great knowledge of the game and is clearly a fan as well. Nothing of the Billy Big *ollocks about him at all.

Agree 100% - the speed of some of Arsenal's play was a different level and gives us a glimpse of what it will be like against the genuine top teams in this league. We shouldn't get carried away based on one result / performance; it will be tough!

Yes, the speed with which they progressed up the pitch was an eye opener for sure.

"Spirit" blah blah blah, that's the old English "pride and passion" cliche dressed up as something else.

Yep. And tbf, it certainly did play a part.

But we are not a plucky League One side with a big physical striker that got lucky on FA Cup 3rd round day.

We are in the PL on merit and technically and tactically we can mix it with the best. Comments like these and those of Micah Richards should serve as motivation for the players to go out there and prove that every single week.

Their possession went no where
I agree on the accuracy
The shots on goals were nothing shots.

Yep. Most of their shots came towards the end of the game when they knew they were in trouble. Mostly pot shots from long range that sailed way over the goal. We never looked like losing that game.

Gary Neville

I think the one thing he misses is that this was the first game at this level for most of the team - I expect us to develop and the team we are now is not the team we'll be after 12 games. Big test for us is what happens when we go a few games without a win

Sorry, when will this happen?

Gary Neville

Not many on goal iirc!
No. 2 good saves from Raya. The rest were speculative and didnt trouble us.

Again i like the use of stats but they can also be very misleading. Arsenal deserved nothing from the game. We will be fine this season IMO.

Agree. You could see in the first 10mins we were feeling our way into the game. The big thing for us IMO will be our ball retention. We cant afford to give it away cheaply. It was clear to see that we rushed our passing when on the counter especially in the middle of the park.

We will learn though, and there will be times that we take a battering.

But i back us against the likes of Palace, Brighton, Newcastle, Burnley etc.
