Gary Thompson

This thought popped into my head which probably is a load of rubbish but could hold some ground.

Could there be a chance that Gary Thompson is in fact not a complete waste of space, and is just as unhappy at working alongside Wally as the players seem to be?

Could it be that if Wally was removed, Gary might come out of his head-down-dragging-his-heels shell and be some sort of asset to the club without Wally breathing down his neck shouting and swearing at him like he does to the rest of them?

Or is this all just a touch of the Michael Ballacks?

Gary Thompson

It may, as you say , be that he has ability to manage and motivate however having been Downes choice and associated with him for most of Downes time at GP it would seem to me vital that a clean break is made and like Downes Thompson is kept clear of team affairs,

Anyone who is prepared to participate in the shambles that masquerades as a pre match warm-up since Forzoni left deserves no sympathy in my book. He must be given the role of assistant tea-boy!

Thompsons record with Bristol Rovers (in two spells in charge) Facts from www.soccerbase.com

Played 47
Won 14
Lost 23
Drawn 10
Ave points per game = 1.1063

Downes Points per game at BFC = 1.1237

So I don't think Thompson is really an option. Does anyone know why he was employed in the first place?

I cant see the point in giving the job to Thompson.

If we cant get someone outside the Club to accept the task of keeping us up, I would give Barry Quinn the chance, he knows the players and has a decent record at youth level.

Gary Thompson

Thompson is not the answer his record with Rovers says it all. We need a fresh start and to clear the dead wood!

Gary Thompson

Hope we get someone in quick, Was It Coppell that said give the job to Wally?

Gary Thompson

That is hard to credit if its true - he must have been feeling pretty bitter about the powers that were about at GP at the time.......or is his judgement not what its cracked up to be?

Barry Quin is a nice guy and an absolute Brentford stalwart. I would have thought Geoff Taylor and Barry would make a nice pairing until the end of the season. I don't think either one of them would want the job full time, however.

I played with Geoff and a few of the lads in a charity cricket match not so long ago (I was crap but remember Mark Williams being pretty handy with the bat). It was clear from the off how much the team respected Geoff.

I would say Perryman and Glenn Cockerill as my number one pairing with Perryman eventually moving upstairs after the foundations have been laid.

Thompson was the only option for tomorrow's match, but I hope we have a proper manager for Saturday.

Happy to leave it to new mgr to decide whether or not to keep Thompson as a coach; it's hard to say from outside what he has done (good or bad) under Wally

Was it the only option?
What about Geoff Taylor? plus Jim Stannard is reserve team manager as well as keeper coach. Would they also not have been an option, and if so is Thompson the best choice?
IMHO, no!!

We don't know- let's see what the team looks like and how they perform on Tuesday. For what it is worth, there was a positive message on beesotted from a purported Bristol Rovers fan who said that Thompson did a good job with a bunch of players who couldn't give a damn. If the reported tears after Notts County are any indication (plus the 3 improved performances without reward since) at least the lads here DO give a damn.

Gary Thompson

A bit obvious, really, but this really IS the time to get behind the team and the club. Whatever else, I think the board is showing a bit of guts sacking Wally now. OK, it's a bit on the late side (just a tad!) but it's not as if heads have been dropping on the pitch. the lads played their hearts out on Saturday, as they have done every time I've seen a Wally Downes team play. But if the results don't come, you've got to go.

Good if that's right. Mind you, wasn't there a story there a few days ago suggesting that Wally had been given a new contract?

To be fair though there was, and still is, a sh*tty squad to work with at Bristol Rovers.

From what I have seen of Thompson with us, he should go as much as Wally should for his body language at matches and training alone!

However, just thought I'd throw up the idea that he might just have been shouted down and sworn at just as much as the players by Wally which could have contributed to it, and now with Wally gone he might prove to be of slightly more use than a bog brush with no bristles.

The interview with Eddie Rogers on Sky Sports suggested Thompson would be given a chance to get the job until the end of the season if he performs well before a proper manager is found. I'm looking seven points from two games please. Maybe eight.

Also Hunty said the players want him given the job. Ugh.

Gary Thompson

hell, why not the full 17 or so we need?

the word on the streets in Brizzle - apart from "ooh arr" !

Ian Atkins of Oxford will be appointed as Manager of Brizzle Rovers soon and will want Garry Thompson as his assistant.

There, makings of a bet or what ? :D

IMO the club needs a ne wmanager and a new coach. A complete clean start with a new startfor all the players.

Agree entirely - it's not as if he knew the secret to survival and just wouldn't tell Wally. That said, we should get behind him for a maximum of two games in charge while a new boss is appointed.

Gary Thompson

Let's get behind Thompson for however long it is. He deserves a fair chance. Hunty said that players respected him, and they can't have respected Downes, can they?

Gary Thompson

I would hope we can get a manager in for Saturday, I don't think having Thompson as manager until the end of the season would be ideal unless he performs this week then why not as we've got little to lose.

Gary Thompson

Thompson is not the answer no dissrespect to him.
We need someone who the players can believe in.
I think Perryman fits the bill perfectly if only short term.

Gary Thompson

Personally I would give Thompson two games, Tuesday and Saturday, while the club looks for a replacement. The argument being that they will have enough time to find somebody decent. I would much prefer the club found the right man for the job and went down, than employed a muppet who "might " keep us up. I am interested to see if Thompsons attitude changes at all. Personally I think it is worthwhile. Stannard and Taylkor are virtually assured of being in employment at Brentford when someone else takes over, with Thompson it is not quite so clear cut, and I think it is worth seeing if he was being dragged down by the wally or if he is able to have a positive impact as the top dog.

Gary Thompson

If the players want him and he can get them motivated and player to their potential again, then Thompson has my full backing FOR NOW.

There's no way he should be given the job full time though on the basis of a few games, and even if we stay up this season he shouldn't automatically be first choice for the vacant managerial position.
