Gazza's tears

Did anyone watch that documentary last night? Excellent stuff and I made my lad sit through it to show him when the England team had a bit of fun and devilry about them. There was a line in it where they suggested that Gazza was the last identifiable footballer to make it, they are not far wrong IMO.
Gazza is a dead man walking, to see him well up when they said that Sir Bobby Robson had asked how he played in that tribute match last year was hard to watch, he's an idiot, he's an alcoholic but he's truly human. Even big Butch came across well and described the 1990 campaign as a boys abroad piss up with football matches in between. They set off as national disgraces with Robson already set up as PSV??'s new manager but came back as heros. That 1990 semi was as good as I have seen England play, that West German mob were special and we more than matched them. I think that is as close I will ever see us win that World Cup but that will do. Great times, sad to see that one of the main players is no longer with us and sad to think that another one will soon be gone.

Gutted to have missed this and only caught the last 2 mins. Was welling up big time when they showed the footage of Sir Bobby in the wheelchair. What a great man and a true legend.

Loved it, emotional stuff.

Didn't realise Robson was hated pre-world cup! Apparently he said to the boys before the semi-final ''you are all like my sons'' and the players in turn saw him as a father-figure.

Amazing to see the massive contrast with the national team these days. They are pathetic compared to them legends.

Agreed.

By the press, we were awful in the 1988 Euros and he was hounded from the job. The country or mainly the press were keen to suggest that we only had a few more weeks of Bobby Robson before sanity could prevail. I remember Lineker interviewing him a few years ago and asking if he forgave the press, he said he did but could never forget.

Agreed.

Caught the last twenty minutes or so of this. What I saw of it looked very good as it took the view points of the players, media and that kid taken to the WC by his dad

Brought back a lot of memories including where I was when the game was played.

Where were the quarter of a million people at Heathrow last week welcoming our gallant failures back. Three hours to do two miles, that shower last week couldn't get away quick enough.

One thing that shocked both myslef and SWMBO was how different the Glenrick Pilchard, sorry Platt looked twenty years on

And when he pulled that ball into shot and said that was the one that Waddle blasted over and how it reminded him of a great time in Italy and reminded him of fantastic times with his dearly departed Dad.....:( I remember a very proud but sadly now late Father-In-Law who didn't like showing too much emotion jump out of his seat and forget who he was when Platt scored that goal v Belgium, it takes you back to good times with good people who were still with you. Nobody wanted that to period of time to end, players, fans and all the plastic fans became one for a short and brief period.

that Platt goal is one of my earliest memories (i don't remember anything before I was 8 years old apparently). i was watching at a neighbour's, and we had the typical "run out into the street and celebrate with the neighbourhood" moment. great scenes.

Gazza's tears

I had just moved to Aberdeen when the 1990 world cup was on and the Anyone But England feeling there was astounding.

Gazza's tears

It was a very touching programme.Bobby Robson was a true gent who commanded respect from every player in that team.To see the response he got from the fans and players at St James Park in the re-match was brilliant.

Sadly Gazza looks on the road to ruin.He has demons in his head he will never beat.Without doubt one of the best England players i've ever seen.

RIP Bobby Robson :sorted:
