George Best

Only played against the Bees the once.

If you have Amazon Prime they have a new documentary (2025) listed, which I'd been saving for a rainy day. Might have to watch it tomorrow now:

San Jose Earthquakes.
Speaking of whom, some of these opposition defenders might have been more Cornflakes than Earthquakes but still, this was some effort by Best for San Jose:

And this thread reminds me of possibly the greatest compliment I've ever heard about a player. Dave Sadler once said that you could have picked Best in any of the 10 outfield positions in the Man U team which won the 1968 European Cup and he'd still have been better than the player he replaced.

Also inspired one of the greatest terrace anthems - even after he'd died!

"Goin' on up to the Spirit in the Sky,
It's where I wanna go, when I die,
When I die and they lay me to rest,
I'm goin' to go on the piss with Georgie Best!"

(Apparently Michael Carrick didn't want his two very young kids to sing the last line, so instead they were to "go on the pitch with Georgie Best"

Greatest footballer that ever lived. Even the great Pele said so. I had the pleasure of seeing him live a couple of times when I was a young lad. He literally could do everything. Amazing talent.

My lovely old man was Brentford through and through, but he took me on the District Line to Upton Park in (probably) 1971/72 because I "had to see" Best, Charlton, Law and Moore whilst we still could. Only time he ever ventured beyond Griffin, Kempton or Sandown Parks until Posh twenty years later 😂

Now that is a five-star father. 😍

The Big Match Revisited on ITV4 is going through the 71/72 season at the moment (look for series 10) and there have been at least two Man U games with the "holy trinity" so far. They are up to the end of January 72 so plenty more to come.

You talk about the "Holy Trinity", but how remarkable was it for all three to win the Ballon D'Or while playing in the same team at the same time!

The only other such example I can find is Real Madrid, who've had multiple winners down the years, but only fairly recently would have fielded a team including all three of C.Ronaldo, Modric and Benzema simultaneously.

Meanwhile, getting back to Best, "The Real Ronaldo" was the only Ballon winner who was significantly younger than Best, though Messi was a few months younger when he won it the first time.

I once did a Chewbacca impression in front of George Best. Not a joke, just a true story.

Bless me father for I have sinned, I went to Shepherds Bush to watch George Best playing for Manchester United in the 70s.

Evidently George Best would have been 80 on 22nd May.

The BBC have put together a very nice tribute with some great clips.

Saw him play for Fulham (along with Moore and Marsh) against Plymouth Argyle at Home Park in 1976. To be honest, I don't remember an awful lot about it other than shouting so much dog's abuse at him that he moved to the other wing to get away from us. Only game my dad ever took me to.

Was on soccer tour in 1979 to California , we met him in a bar after a San Jose Earyhquakes game. We knew he was coming to that bar as the owner told us a couple of days before. Brilliant friendly modest guy so patient in photos being taken. Feel very lucky to to have met him.
