The BBC have an article on this http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/24589671 where they mention some games that I remember

  • Clive Allen (Crystal Palace at Coventry, 6 Sept 1980): Allen smashed a free-kick which hit the back stanchion and bounced out - without the officials spotting it had gone in. Palace lost 3-1.
  • Freddie Sears (Crystal Palace at Bristol City, 15 Aug 2009): More misery for Palace after Sears' shot flew in and out of the goal after hitting the base of the goal. Referee Rob Shoebridge gave a goal kick, and Palace were beaten 1-0.
  • John Eustace (own goal, Reading at Watford, 20 Sept 2008): Linesman Nigel Bannister flagged for a goal instead of a corner when Watford midfielder Eustace put the ball behind. That gave Reading a 1-0 lead before Watford earned a 2-2 draw.


but why no mention of the shopping trolley!!!!

I remembered Steve Kember being applauded for sportsmanship in 1972 when a 'goal' went into the Forest goal via the side netting. The Palace captain told the ref that in his opinion it hadn't been a goal. While checking the facts, I came across the additional fact that Palace have been hit by 'goals' that were over the line but weren't awarded five times. Check out the last one in particular. Unbelievable!

Many years ago in a heated local derby between Staines Town and Hampton a shot from a Hampton player just cleared the cross bar rolled down the back of the net and sat behind the net until a Hampton fan lifted the net up and kicked the ball under it.

Guess what?

The goal was given.

2 I can remember involving the Bees-home v Southend in 68(?)-diving header for Southend went just inside the post. Net was open and the ball went through. I was standing behind Royal Oak goal and it was disallowed much to the fury of the Southend players!

Alan Murray in 72-73 at Plymouth Argyle. Tremendous shot hit the stanchion inside the goal and the ball ran down and out of the net at the back. Argyle fans rushed down pointing at the ball but the goal stood. Plymouth was a pretty dodgy place to go as it was and the walk down the hill from the ground was memorable:eek:
