Goals from headers

It might be just my perception but are we poor at this. How do the stats stack? Have we been better in the past or is it the game has changed and they are just not common in the modern game or not for us? I know we lack height but even given should we score more? Is it cross delivery, arrival in the box or set piece problems? Are other leagues more likely to score headers seems more in the PL. Do we need a heading coach?

Goals from headers

I would imagine it's been found that we are less likely to score from putting high balls and crosses into the box, therefore we don't do it that often and therefore don't score many headers. It's certainly true that we haven't scored many in recent months though if you go back to the start of the season we scored three in the first two home games (Egan, Bjelland, Watkins). Can't think of too many others since then, Nico at Preston and Maupay against Leeds though they were rebounds/defensive fluffs...

We don't play the sort of style that creates a lot of heading opportunities, with probably only Sawyers with any heading ability in our attacking group, not using an old-fashioned centre forward, plus only Jozefzoon seems to be able to deliver crosses with any danger. When the centre backs and Dalsgaard go up for set pieces, then we have targets to aim for but the key is delivery. All our best players delivering set pieces are irregular starters – McEachran, Macleod, Judge – and the others seem to deliver floaty balls that are easy to defend.

I'd guess the general statistics show that the greatest goal threat comes from shooting and not headers, hence our stats.

Watkins is a very decent headerer of the ball - he scored an excellent goal earlier in the season, and got a handful for Exeter with his head too.

The corner from which we scored against Forest earlier this season was very clever and made a mockery of MW's tactic of leaving three up for corners.

We got 2. Both Egan and Andreas scored.

I don't agree re: style of play - we simply aren't doing well enough yet on converting set piece situations, which underlines the poor return from headed goals.

I certainly agree we don't make the most of set pieces. That's coaching rather than style but I think the core problem is delivery, as I put originally. Judge and Macleod made a significant difference towards the end against Preston.

Perhaps he should take the corners then?

Goals from headers

WE don't do headed goals and the last to score from them were Egan at Hull and Maupay's gift v Leeds.

From memory the following have also scored with their head this season.

Egan-Forest
Bjelland- Forest
Egan - QPR
Barbet - Mboro
Watkins - Bristol City
Yennaris - Preston

We don't score from headers or corners. Never have done.

Think I read we've conceded the most goals from corners in the league too so problems at both ends on that front!

Goals from headers

Talk to John O'Mara and Andy McCullogh about that 'fact'.

I have said it loads of times this season...."why do we float balls in, for their keeper to just catch or defenders clear".
It is always noticible that there is plenty of space on edge of penalty area, we have half decent shooters, Sawyers for one.
Not sure why we do not do it...so many wasted corners/set pieces!

Yeah, but everyone complains if you do short corners...
For set pieces, the way I see it is we launch it back post and get one of the big lads to play it back in and cause a kerfuffle, or we play it short and create a bit of panic, either with a dribble or low cross (more chance of scoring from low cross methinks)

Goals from headers

As long as we score goals, I don't really care how they go in. But agree with Lush55...our delivery from set pieces isn't great, too high and floaty and we lack someone that can really whip the ball in

Judgey fair enough but he's obviously not been on the pitch much in the past few seasons! I've never seen Josh do that...

We don't score from headers or corners. Never have done.

We scored 10 from corners last season. Top scorers from corners last year were Cardiff, Leeds, Burton and Newcastle with 11.

We don't score many goals from the halfway line in the last minute at home to QPeeHa either.

There that should do it.

Goals from headers

Quite a statement you've made there. I guess you were not even a twinkle in yer old man's eyes, when John O'Mara was playing for us

Those were the days when a guy of 6'3" looked like Gulliver in Lilliput and used to disguise his intentions by bending over as if to tie a bootlace just before the corner was taken so that defenders didn't realise he was a goal threat. I think Jackie \Graham also scored 2 or 3 direct from corners that season

My all time hero, John O'Mara. What a season that was

Goals from headers

I think the reason we float the ball over from corners is that we actually look for Dalsgaard at the back post with the intention for a header back across goal. The one thing i think we have been pants at this year is the winning of headers from DB's goal kicks to the side by the half way line.
