Since our French bulldog is closing in on 20 League goals this season, I thought that I’d see how often players have achieved this goal since the 70s, which was the decade when I started supporting the Bees.

Also, since there is a chance that 2 (or possibly even 3) other players may net at least League 10 goals this season, I thought that it was also worth seeing how often other players have scored 10(+) League goals when the top scorer has notched up at least 20.

Hopefully this will not jinx our forwards’ scoring feats for the rest of this season!

1971/72: John O’Mara 25; Bobby Ross 13; John Docherty 13

1976/77: Gordon Sweetzer 23; Andy McCullough 10

1977/78: Steve Phillips 32; Andy McCullough 22; Gordon Sweetzer 12

1982/83: Francis Joseph 24; Gary Roberts 12; Chris Kamara 11; Stan Bowles 10

1986/87: Robbie Cooke 20; Gary Stevens 10

1989/90: Dean Holdsworth 24; Gary Blissett 11

1991/92: Dean Holdsworth 24; Gary Blissett 17

1992/93: Gary Blissett 21; no other players scored 10 or more

1994/95: Nicky Forster 24; Robert Taylor 23

1996/97: Carl Asaha 23; Nicky Forster 10

1998/99: Lloyd Owusu 22; no other players scored 10 or more

2001/02: Lloyd Owusu 20; Ben Burgess 17; Paul Evans 14.

So, since the 70s:

(a) only once (1977/78) has one player scored over 30 League goals and another has netted 20(+) League goals in the same season and

(b) only once (1982/83) has one player scored more than 20 League goals and 3 others have notched up 10(+) goals in the same season.

What, I wonder, are the chances of (b) above being repeated this season?

That really is quite surprising as the only poor/mediocre seasons we've had since then, by my reckoning, have been:

2002-3
2003-4
2006-7
2007-8

I think I'm correct in saying that in every other season we've finished in the top half of whatever division we've been in.

Top League goalscorer for us in any season since 2001/02 has been Clayton Donaldson with 18 in 2012/13.

Going off of memory I thought Clayton got 22 goals that season. I guess that must have been in all competitions.

Do goals in play off games count as league goals?

No. I’m surprised we haven’t had anyone since 2002 to score more than 20 in the league considering the amount of money we’ve received for strikers since then.

The reason(s) will have varied from season to season. Your suggestion will have been true for some seasons, or perhaps it may have been simply that we didn't score many goals in a particular season, or we just didn't have any decent goalscorers or perhaps we suffered a lot from injuries in a particular season or a combination of reasons. In 1972/73, for example, our joint top League goalscorers were John Docherty and Alan Murray with 7. The same number of goals were also netted by our top League scorer in 1980/81, namely Bob Booker. That figure is the lowest notched by our top League goalscorer for any season since 1970/71.

At the end of the day, though, scoring 20 goals is no mean feat over a maximum of 46 games, so perhaps another way of looking at it is that between 1970/71 and 2001/02 we were quite possibly blessed with players who could net 20(+) goals as we had 13 during that time and none since then.

As Rebus has said, they don't count as League goals and I am only counting goals scored in the 46 League games - that way, it is a level playing field across all seasons. In 2012/13, Clayton also scored 2 in the play-offs (plus some Cup goals), which I have not included.

Well done to NM for notching his 20th League goal this season yesterday, so I'm glad that my initial email didn't jinx him!. If he scores another 5, it'll be the best individual performance by a Bee since 1977/78.

With OW on 9, SB now on 8 and SC now on 6, with 12 matches remaining, there's still a chance that 3 other players can total at least 10 League goals this season, which would also make it the first time since 1982/83 that we will have had one player scoring 20(+) and 3 others scoring 10(+) League goals in the same season. If only 2 of those 3 notch at least 10 goals, this would be the first time since 2001/02 that we will have had one player scoring 20(+) and 2 others scoring 10(+) League goals in the same season.

NM must have done better than a lot of previous strikers because he's pretty much unselfish. Many strikers would have gone for goal and not squared the ball so brilliantly as NM did yesterday.

20 goals and credited with 7 assists. Watch Sergi's late goal again and see how Neal makes a diagonal run to open up the space... and that's not even counted as an assist.

No doubt someone will correct me, but I seem to remember that in our promotion season in 1962/3, we had no less than three players who each scored over 20 goals: John Dick, Billy McAdams and maybe Johnny Brooks.

Yes all three scored over 20 league goals. 23 for Dick IIRC and 22 each for the other two.

NM now on 21 League goals and SB notched his 10th today. It just needs OW to score one more goal for us to have 1 player scoring at least 20 League goals and 2 others notching at least 10 in the same season since 2001/02,

I know this is about league goals but I remember Deano got 39 goals in total one season which is pretty phenomenal

He totalled 38 goals in the 91/92 season, with 24 of those coming in the League, 4 in the FA Cup, 6 in the League Cup and 4 in the FL Trophy.

Just shows how hard it is to get 20 goals in the league if he 'only' was 4 over 20 in that season. Also suggests how impressive Blissett's haul was a year later.

Tony Mahoney had scored 15 goals before he broke his leg in December 1982. We were scoring goals for fun that year and could have been promoted but for that.

...which is why it would be nice if Neal was able to score another 4 goals (unlikely but not impossible) as it would make him the highest scorer for us in the League since Steve Phillips netted an incredible 32 in or 1977/78 promotion year.

I think even 15-20 years ago it was a different game. There’s no real comparison to what went before. What I do know is that Neal is one of the best finishers I’ve seen down at GP.

We have missed a trick not being in the play offs/promoted this season with the phenomenal contributions of the front 3. 70 + Goals and Assists combined in the league alone. Going to be very tough to replicate that once one, two or potentially all 3 leave at the end of the season. Must be the most potent forward line in the division.

I would say there is absolutely no chance all 3 will leave.

One more goal in the next 2 games would pull him clear of Francis Joseph, Dean Holdsworth (twice) and Nicky Forster. Come on, you French terrier!

He was bombed out by Callaghan though. Funnell was bought by Dodgin for a small fortune and then practically given away.

Total of 90 goals in 124 appearances.

85 goals in 116 Division One appearances.

Now that’s a record that won’t be matched. :)
