Gordon Riddick

[Oxford Bee]

I was chatting to a friend of mine the other day and he mentioned his Dad was a good standard amateur footballer but that his Uncle Gordon played for Brentford. I’ve known Chris for a few years but this had never come up before. His uncle developed dementia like many of those great headers of the ball from that era.

He was a good standard cricketer and played and captained Langleybury where he was Club President.

Part of my early Bees memories.

I remember Gordon Riddick. Early 70's I think.

Mid 70's I'd say.

That side was another example of the whole being greater than the constituent parts. Riddick could hardly move at the back, and Jimmy Gabriel couldn’t do much more in the middle. Together, it worked!

Until the arrival of Pat Kruse and his ability to calmly control and pass a football as well as being an effective centre half my ,albeit questionable, memory is of Brentford centre halfs being heroic trenchermen who fought for the ball and let the others get on with doing anything creative. Nothing wrong with being a Brentford warriors though.

It didn’t really, did it ?
We were pony during GR’s time.

Fair to say the two worst periods of our league history is 1920 to 1926 and 1972 to 1976. Kudos to anyone that followed us blindly back then!

I meant that we didn’t disappear altogether!

Wearing my rose tinted glasses as a nine year old in 73, Gordon Riddick seemed like a warrior to me, also Jimmy Gabriel and the majestic Dave Metchick yes it probably was the worst time to start supporting our team but I bloody loved it...

Missed out on the 20/26 era but have been at full throttle following blindly from about 1955 until Saturdays game against WH, going to watch the B team against PSG and that's my quota done for this year, slowing down a lot now due to age but have still managed 8 live games and all games on TV this season, roll on next season.
