Just out of curiousity, when you were on your away trip benders and you yourself were the recipitent of stewarding, did you ever offer any handy tips to your fellow pros whilst being thrown arse first out of their stadiums? lol

The main weakness (until we signed Kruszynski) then was CM, as it still is now. I don't think Billy Manuel, Wilf Rostron or Kevin Godfrey would add anything

If I remember rightly, we signed Hughton in the latter half of the season, so Woodman would have been ahead of whoever we had at LB before then

Weston would probably edge out Marcus Gayle as he was at that time (he improved later as he got more experience). Under the pass-back rules which came in after then, Benstead might lose out to Lee, as his form seemed to dip when the rules changed

I think the Coppell play-off team was even better though. I doubt whether any of the current team would have got in that side - the current squad may be stronger as we had no cover back then, which probably cost us promotion in the end

I don't believe any of today's 'first team' would be put on front of the team that played Fulham/Peterborough. Maybe bar one :shrug:

All about opinions I suppose. I don't think Weston would have been good enough to train with that team, never mind replace Marcus and as for Teflon Lee replacing GB . He's a fair shot stopper but that's about it :shrug:.

Good though the 91/92 team was I think we are deluding ourselves if we think they could even call spell tippy tappy.

Noddy's team was route one at its best. Sure we had some good games but we had dull ones as well. For every Fulham at home there was a Reading away.It was the cause of our demise the following season when better defences in Div 2 (that was) dealt with the long ball easily.

We used to wonder why Kruszynski made such a difference in the run in as he never seemed to actually touch the ball (it was generally flying over his head).

We got up largely on the basis of 38 goals from a one Mr Holdsworth...IMHO

Don't agree with your analysis. They played as a team, and won promotion as a team. The squad was mainly assembled by Steve Perryman, and inherited by Phil Holder, and credit to Phil is that he carried on with what Steve would probably have achieved. Both were Managers who motivated, not intimidated, the players.

:yes:. Further more, that team (or those that stayed and those that were added) were doing great in the second tier the following season (with the possible exception of Murray Jones). Then ridiculous luck with injuries after Xmas done for us. Very unlucky to go down in my opinion .

If i remember rightly this side attacked down the flanks and passed and move with the best our division had to throw at them.We had players who could mix it and play.Dont remember the ball whizzing over Detsis head that much.It also had a team spirit second to none.Not as good as Coppells side but not far away.Happy days

I agree with you. Possibly the worst injury for us was Terry Evan's injury against Wolves, which was catastrophic.

Now that brings back memories I had forgotten about - Shane Westley! A real trier, but just didn't have the Terry Evans ability and sheer determination.

They were route one for the most part but more effective than todays team as we had 3 tall strikers (Holdsworth, Bliss, Gayle). Compare that with today where we just have Alexander yet insist on playing long high balls to Charlie Mac

Two good wingers, balls out wide quickly, good crossing to two powerful forwards and an excellent box to box midfielder. I actually think that Scott is trying (but failing badly) to do the same.

Honestly the only player from our current squad who would start in the 92 team IMO is Woodman.

Billy Manuel was decent, Woodman is better.

The 92 team was a beast of a team, big nasty, box to box in MF, two fast wingers, power up front, good in the air, great finishing. Not too much creativity but we played %age football brilliantly.

I would imagine that the budget for that squad at if linked up to todays prices would be quite abit more than what AS has had this season.

Woodman for Manuel & Lee for Bayes possibly O'Connor for Buckle too as a squad extra only.

I agree, it was a very strong team, that is why we won the league. All 3 forwards went to the premiership within 24 months. Our current team are a mid table side.
