There was a really nice little story in When Saturday Comes years ago, about the Speedway days at The Shay.
Because of the angle of the track, the corner spot/flag area was actually on a piece of duck board with turf laid on top that could be removed after the game for the speedway.
The author went on to say that great fun used to be had after it had been raining, as the turf would be loose on the boards, and many an unsuspecting visiting player went arse over tit taking a corner, he finished the article by saying something along the lines of "I have to laugh when people get all defensive about playing on plastic pitches, don't they know? 'Town used to play on wood!"
Heart goes out to their fans, I don't know how I'd cope if it was us, hope it never comes to pass.
