They had a freak goal that took a deflection and looped over Nelson - shades of Parker and Shilton from Italia '90. Nelson pulled off two very good saves the first a one-on-one breakaway; the second at full-length from a powerful header.

Our winner was a well-taken header by Burton who was free at the far post just as the clock ticked over to 45:00 - nice!

Hartlepool Match Reports

As mentioned on other threads Hartlepool were a pretty good side and gave us a run for our money.

Burton was my man of the match by a mile - I just hope he does'nt get too frustrated with the large number of layoffs and touches that get wasted.

Nelson had one of his games where he went walk about in his penalty area too often but atoned for that with a couple of excellent saves. Turner improvres with every game but overall the defence looked a bit edgy.

Good to see Burton and Rankin getting on the score sheet again. The celebrations on and off the pitch for Burton's goal were superb

Poor crowd in numbers but good in volume. Lets hope for more on Saturday - maybe we should try playing midweek games on Wednesday nights?

Factors:
1. Champions League on the TV
2. Rain
3. Away Support had to travel 300 miles on a Tuesday night. I'd guess around 100 on the Ealing Road.

Turner was superb. Hope we can keep hold of him for the season. MOM by a street IMHO :) Burton also pure class :sorted:

Hartlepool are a good side, their no. 14 was excellent and Boyd was a handful upfront.

Rode our luck a bit in 2nd half but an excellent result :sorted: :)

Yes we got 3 points tonight, although with 85mins,I would have settled for a draw. Pool were a good team, and could have nicked it with a couple of chances....but the BEES held out.
I recorded Sky Sports too, knowing that Jeff Stelling is a Pool supporter, see if would say anything if any goals happened at the match, and he did!. Even tho it was his team we beat, he made a bit of a joke about it and commented about the Bees being unbeaten at home etc.....more than that t@sser Kamara did sitting opposite him! :nono:. What is it with that bloke, never says anything good about us!

Also did a bit of research when I got home!.

This time last season!

Apart from the fact it was a cross from the touchline and not a shot from the edge of the area...

Excellent game of attacking football from both sides, chances at both ends and if I'm honest, Hartlepool deserved a draw at least. However, though they had planty of chances, a combination of excellent goalkeeping and poor finishing contributed to their down fall. For the Bees, a jittery first half in defence, bordering on the farcial on occasions. A lot of our problems were self inflicted, through either mis-placed passes or lapses in concentration.

No matter, the winning goal was glorious. Turner stepped out of defence with the ball at his feet and swept the ball wide to Rankin, who had been moved there by MA. Isiah jinked inside, beating 1 man, floated a right foot cross over to the far post where Burton rose to thump his header home from 6 yards. Lord knows how many players in red and white have balloon the ball over in the past, but Deon showed pure class to seal a somewhat fortunate victory.

Hard luck on the 'Pool, but that's football.

All very true but we are second in the league for Gods sake and closing on the leaders. 4797 is nowhere near acceptable.

If you were one of the stayaways, why? (not you Banana, anyone ).

Thought we were pretty good in first half and it would have been harsh if we hadn't equalised. Second half was a bit of a different story. Hartlepool upped the ante and really came at us and had a number of good chances. You could see by the dejection on their players faces at the end that they felt they had been mugged. Probably the best team we've had down here this season I would say but aren't last minute winners great......!!

Agree Burton was different class. Nelson also made some excellent saves. I cant fault the back four individually as they all seemed to have pretty good games but collectively something just didn't gel tonight for them. Bit disappointed with Hunt and Lawrence.Very enjoyable game though.

My 2d.

First 10 minutes all Bees, with 'pool coming back into it a bit more as the half wore on. Their goal was freakish, but maybe a little question mark on Nelson, as he started to move forward initially, before the ball sailed over his head into the net..... He more than made up for it in the second half though with 2 outstanding saves.

Rankins goal was from a set piece (either a corner or a FK near the corner, I can't remember now...). The best bit about it was that as the ball was about to be launched in, I could see MA screaming at the players in the box to generate some movement, as they where all totally static. That woke them up, and Burton made a great curving run to the far post to take to ball down and prod across goal for Rankin. A real poachers goal as their defender was definately favourite for the ball but Rankins desire showed through. :love2:

Second half they started the better side, playing some decent stuff on the break for most of the rest of the half, but Sodje and Turner held firm. And as mentioned before, Nelson made 2 great saves in this period when called upon.

We where pressing forward hard at this stage but couldn't quite break 'Pool down.

Rhodes came on with 10-15 to go and caused them some problems down the left, with one deflected cross hitting their near post.
Then on 90 minutes up pops Rankin on the right wing, who cut inside to the edge of the area and clipped a great ball onto the back stick for Burton to hold off two defenders and bullet header us to the win from 6 yards out! Emotional scenes all round, and I think I need to go for a lie down! Oh happy days! :sorted:

Tabb and Hunt where strangely subdued for e, but te rest of them played well. My MOM, Burton for the winning goal and for adding that extra lit bit of quality all night.

Tough on Hartlepool, who looked to be the best side we've come across so far. Towards the end, it looked like only one team was going to win it and it wasn't us. But we hung on in there and when the opportunity came, nothing was going to stop Burton scoring. He is the best forward we've had in a very long time, probably since Blissett. Turner again outstanding, edging MotM for me. I was again disappointed by Lawrence in midfield, especially after he played so well at right back on Saturday.

But how pis-sed off must our manager be that fewer than 5,000 could be bothered to get off their arses and come to the game? Since ITV switched their Champions League coverage to Tuesdays, I think our midweek gates have suffered and we should seriously consider moving to Wednesday. With our 100% home record intact and Blackpool likely to bring a few more than Hartlepool, anything less than 6,000 on Saturday will be very worrying.

Yeh right. Anyone else think our "non goal" the first half looked suspiciously Onside. Hargreaves booked for winning the ball etc etc. Where do we get them. Admit he wasn't in Dansons league of incompetence mind you.

Hartlepool Match Reports

Thought the save Nelson made when one of their players strode onto the ball all alone and smashed a shot that for all the world looked as if it was heading in was the deciding factor in the end. Must admit Hartlepool were the best side ive seen this season at and deserved a draw at worst. However, such is life hee hee

Yeah. Looked about ten yards onside to me, even from a very poor angle. I think the lino must have been taking some hallucinogenic drugs! But you can't blame the ref for that decision - he didn't make it. But giving a goal kick for Rhodes deflected cross that hit the post was unbelievable and the first of a string of strange decisions from a ref who up to then had been very good.

Agree with much of the above and thought that Hartlepool were a very solid side. Fast on the break and for most of the match first to any header in defence or attack. Midfield didn't really get into it and only the class of Salako who I thought played a blinder at full back, Burton and the tireless Rankin, kept us in the game. Turner plays better every match and although he and Sodje were given a torrid time tonight they kept at it till the end. Both Tabb & Hunt looked a bit jaded. Ref was good in the first half but changed his tune with his jersey at half time and made some awful decisions as the game wore on. Was hoping for a point with minutes to go but delighted with three - unfair on Hartlepool but sweeter for that.

Excellent 3 points against two well matched sides. Rather like us Pool are a well organised side, who knock it about and have a fair bit of pace about them. I'd have settled for 1-1 as I thought they might nick it but for us to get the winner was absolute quality. How they've only won once away from home is a real surprise.
Lots of good performances tonight - only Tabby looking a little bit short of his normal zest and good touch.
4797 ? Thought there was more than that - what an atmosphere. The noise all around the ground at times had the hair standing up on the back of my neck. The "We're the right side, middle and left side of Brook Rd" followed by the New Road and then Braemar was superb.
Also, thumbs up to PG for acknowledging the Pool supporters making the long journey and the good round of applause we all gave them - just a shame they got stuffed in the last minute :D - now that's got to hurt

Well we pinched it, didn't we.

Saturday's game looked like it took its toll tonight with a number of players below par.

Hartlepool are a good side and were unfortunate not to have gone away with at least a point (you could see their reaction at the final whistle).

Still that's football.............:hat:

Shame about the crowd what do management, players at Brentford FC have to do ?.

Tight game between 2 well matched teams although we must have used our luck for the season winning it! Our midfield sat way too deep. Salako was great, I just hope his hamstring is all right after MA told him to move over, which thankfully he didn't. Biggest difference between the halves was Salako and O'Connor didn't get forward so much. Tabb very subdued tonight but Rhodes did very well when he came on. We need a runner from midfield to get on the end of Burton's flick ons: What has happened to Eddie Hutch as I would prefer his athleticisim over Lawrence any day.

Moan of the match: Why the f*ck did those 2 drunk d*ckheads in the New Road persist in drinking bottles of beer after the interval having had their first supply confiscated by the stewards in teh 1st half. Well done for evicting them though!

Champagne moment: That clearance from a 'pool player that broke the guttering in the New Road soaking those beneath!

Hartlepool Match Reports

Just a few things....

A lot of kids cannot come to midweek matches so maybe that contributes a little to the low crowd figure ?

Nelson booting the ball and it hitting Sodje on the back of the head and nearly scoring the craziest own goal of all time at GP  :D

Also cannot believe that Hartlepool have only won 3 points away all season.

The goal celebrations in Brook Rd were the best in a long long time :D

Hartlepool was very unlucky last night. I would have been happy for a point as at times in the second half we were outplayed.

Thought that the defence played very well and the forwards tried hard (I did'nt think that Burton played as well as a lot of other people seemed to, but he took his goal well). The midfield were poor, the two in the centre hardly touched the ball and Hunt + Tabb had off days (to put it mildly).

Still a wins a win.

Hartlepool Match Reports

I thought hartlepool were very average and very week up front with no cutting edge.
I thought we were very poor last night too, especially the midfield.
I thought the ref was very poor, he decided to slow the game down to his pace with constant whistle blowing and then as neither side seemed to create anything he would become centre stage himself. He went from OK, to poor, and ended up baffoon like!

It was all worth while as a sublime last minute goal earns another 3 points. The sign of having a great season is when you can play teams that come to stop you and are more than capable, you have a scrappy game but that extra little bit of quality wins you the game! We will have games like last night and we will have others where we murder people too.

It always felt like something silly was going to happen as at first when a long ball was drifting harmlessly to nelson and for reasons only known to himself sodje stuck his foot in the air and toe'd the ball and it looped over nelson towards an open goal. I thought nelson had given up the ghost but it actually took a wicked bounce straight back into his arms as he ran goalwards. Secondly nelson drop kicked a ball and it hit sodje on the back and pinged back past our post. Third time lucky for hartlepool as a cross whacks the lunging hunt and loops freakishly into the top of the net.

A lot of people around me were giving nelson a hard time but I thought he kept us in it, commands his area, when he comes he gets whether it is a catch or a punch and apart from hitting sodje and 1 kick that went out his kicking was top class last night (and he had enough opportunities with all the offsides and free kicks the ref kept giving).

Defensively I thought kev was outstanding again, the best full back in the club. He can tackle, head, control and pass a ball and brings it down and plays when he can as well as getting forward and crossing it. Salako was also solid at left back and got forward well. Turner and sodje played very well but I sometimes think sodje attacks the ball when he has been asked to leave it by the goaly or another player and causes a few problems at times.

Our midfield was pants last night. Tabb just could not get into the game at all, his first touch was awful, his passing worse and could not go past anyone for toffee. He looked jaded and tired.. everyone has a bad game.

Hunt seemed to struggle to get hold of the ball as well.

Overall I thought we gave away so many balls and miscontrolled dozens of times but the weather made it very difficult as well.
I thought hargreaves threw himself around a bit but to little effect and lawrence did not get a touch. I was expecting much more from him as a premiership internatonal but the game passed him by as i waited in vain. When he did get a touch he fell on his ar5e and the ball skidded to a pool player!

I thought the forwards worked hard again on scraps but won the game with two bits of quality as they took it in turns to set each others goals up.

We are allowed to play below par from time to time especially as we won ;) , but with two hard away games coming up we will need to play better then that at home to blackpool on saturday to keep the run going.

Hartlepool Match Reports

It was refreshing to see two sides who wanted to win the game and it made for a very entertaining game even if the quality was lacking for large periods. I thought we missed Talbot in midfield a hell of a lot. Lawrence looked to be a yard or two off the pace and Hargreaves had a bit too much to do. Awful booking though, did the ref not see him win the ball fom two yards away?

The defence was shaky under pressure but I still came away thinking that Turner, Sodje, Salako and O'Connor all had good games, the problem was they didn't play together.

Also worriesd by Tabby, I hope he's not injured. My missus spotted he wasn't himself in the first half and it was no surprise to see him substituted.

Pools were a decent side but I do think we should have beaten them more comfortably if we had shown a bit more composure in the final third, too many crossing opportunities were wasted and we showed we've got the firepower if we can get the delivery sorted. We are going to give someone a real pasting soon.

I have to largely agree with The H in disagreeing with the above (except for the bit about the ref, who had quite a good first half, but a very poor second half).

Hartlepool looked a pretty decent side to me on the break and certainly the best we've had at GP this season. I felt that, by and large, we looked pretty good for most of the first half and played some really good stuff at times, although Tabby did look rather off colour, with nothing going right for him. Pools were generally the better team after the break and a draw was probably a fairer result, although that probably makes up for Myers being sent off on Saturday by the wonderful Mr. Danson, and us ending up with one point instead of three. Swings and roundabouts, I suppose.

Absolutely. There must be rules on the ref not wearing the same colours as any of the players, surely. Could he also have come out in red and white or blue and white? His yellow shirt could have been very confusing for all the players (and possibly costly for one team or the other) in the heat of the moment in a goalmouth scramble or if Nelson had gone up for a Bees corner, for example.
