Homophobic chants

Really sad to hear the homophobic chants today from the ealing road terrace. Clearly heard "Brighton is a town full of faggots" and "Does your boyfriend know your here"

Thought our club was better than that.

Is there anything that could or should be done to try and educate people that this is really not the way to behave?

I was also very disappointed by it. We didn't do it for the league game did we?

I also thought we were better than that but I guess some aren't.

It's pretty pathetic. I always find the Brighton retort of "you're too ugly to be gay" a good comeback.

Sad to hear it, about ten minutes in, but not sung again after the three songs.

Amazed that people seriously get upset by these chants.
What upset me most is the way that Brighton fans were allowed the run of Brentford. Singing in our pubs, singing down the middle of the roads afterwards all the way to the train station, basically doing what they wanted.
Maybe the Championship has turned us soft?

Songs about Brighton fans being gay are no different IMO to songs about us paying the benefits of supporters of Nothern clubs or Gillingham and Swindon fans appearing on Jeremy Kyle. Anyone at Rotherham last season will remember the young girl in the home end being picked out and hearing 'you've got chlamydia' over and over again. Did we really think she had an STD? Probably not. Do we really think everyone in the away end today was gay? No, of course not, it's just part of the banter between 2 sets of football fans.

have you considered the impact on gay or lesbian supporters who play or follow Brentford. What does the chant say to them. Should they just laugh it off?

So we better not sing that an away fan has 'eaten all the pies' in case some Brentford supporters have got weight issues? The song at Rotherham shouldn't have been sung in case any Bees present have ever had an STD? No more 'dirty northern bastards' in case someone in New Road was born North of Watford?Songs close to the mark have been part of football for years. They won't stop anytime soon and I think an issue is being made out of nothing here.

Not going to get into a debate about northern pie eaters. I am talking about specific homophobic chants.
What I would say is that in my view mocking a person for their sexuality is simply wrong. You are entitled to your view that it is simply harmless banter, however most of society and the law of the land would find your argument wrong as using language which is likely to offend and is done so on the basis of things such as sexuality is rightly (in my view) not seen as acceptable.
I think also Brentford Football Club would find you wrong, as much of the work the club does in the community is based on a diverse society.
Going to my question, if you were a gay player at Brentford or a gay fan and you heard that stuff what would you think and are you ok with that?

The difference is that the songs about gay people are not just offensive but are in fact an offence. Do you want to be known as a decent family club that welcomes everybody regardless of race religion and sexual orientation or as supporters who are homophobic bigots. We're better than that!

If I was a gay player for Brentford I would be focusing on my job on the pitch and don't think I would allow what was being sung around me to bother me too much. But I am neither a Brentford player nor am I gay, so maybe if I was I would feel differently. I can only tell you my opinion, I'm not saying I'm right and you're wrong, I'm just giving my opinion, which presumably is what this thread and in fact the whole website is all about. Whatever you are people be proud of yourself. I might weigh about 2 stone too much, but that's because I like Guinness and Curry, but I sure as hell wouldn't let people I don't know signing songs about overweight people get to me.

'boyfriend' chant met with plenty of chuckles in NR505, even amongst families with minors, some took time repeating it to those who didnt get it first time. Not judging, just saying.

It's not really homophobic is it? It's not a chant about hating gays or saying gays are horrible. It's a simple amusing chant.

I'm getting close to sodding off football. You can't do anything or say anything to anyone without offending someone.

Don't worry we barely heard a peep from your fans throughout the entire game, never mind any homophobic chants! Is it usually that quiet at GP?

In any event, I think it's more embarrassing than offensive; many fans seem to think we've never heard such chants before. Of course, we get them at pretty much every game!

BTW I can't quite believe how you didn't beat us! You should've been out of sight by half time but for some very poor finishing!

Correct same as northerners beating their wives, blokes from Cornwall and Devon prefering to shag their tractors than their wives, people from east Anglia shagging their sisters, mums and fathers and Welsh people shagging sheep. All relatively light heart stuff.

No doubt the police will be making dawn raids in the coming days to pick up those chanting such songs

I was explaining to my son as we were walking to the game yesterday how much more fun football used to be when I was a younger man.

To be quite honest i am completely fed up with the Guardianista manifesto of being offended on behalf of other people.

How the hell can anybody who isn't gay, say what a gay person might find offensive?

And at a bloody football match. Traditionally the passtime of the ordinary, working man in the street.

Please go and be offended on behalf of other people somewhere else.

Why don't we have any footballers, who feel able to come out? What about the people who were chanting at the players every week. Against Ipswich someone in Ealing Road spent the whole match calling McGoldrick a poof and a faggott.

How will campaigns like Football vs Homophobia ever get off the ground.

Or shall we go back to monkey chanting and banana throwing because we always used to do it.

We have some delicate flowers at GP, can we now concentrate on the league and the real world. I didn't want want to be diffusing a situation where Wolves fans thought my lad was a London carnt and wanted to do damage but it's life and it happens, I'd rather they had called us names and effed off but such is life. Delicate flowers are killing football.

Seriously though my wife comes from Leeds. She is a little on the chubby side, probably has had an STD in her time and no doubt has had a little try of girl on girl during her drunken nights out in Yorkshire. She can also be a little bit sensitive at times, so therefore when she next plans a visit to GP I think she is royally ****ed.

complete over reaction from some, to a degree some of this is part and parcel of football. i have found the championship to be a much more friendly division this year than i expected, atmosphere outside the ground is good between both sets of fans each week. if there is a occasional song big deal!

Th reason more footballers don't come out may be down to the following reasons

A) there are not as many gay footballers as you think......not everyone is gay in this modern world you know
B) some people are proud in keeping their business 'their' business and don't feel the need to make a song and dance of it just to placate left wing idiots that want to make it into an issue.

It is relevant as it is an example of how football has caught up with society. Which it hasn't done in this case.
