Howard Webb

The one Englishman who may be in the World Cup final.

Did the Champions League final, the first one that could be referee'd by an Englishman for six years.
Was given one of the higher profile last 16 games and has done it excellently.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him do the final, his linesmen have been superb too and many of the other big refs have made big errors.

Portugal v Spain would be higher profile. And doesn't he have to hope for an all European final or a final not containing one European team?

Yes, that's why I said one of the higher profile - given he couldn't do England v Germany.

Lots of things need to go his way, and the Uzbek chap who did the opening game is probably ahead at the moment, but he's in the shake up I reckon.

For the record I think he had a poor season reffing in the premier league last season. But good luck to him.

One thing I have noticed in this tournament is that the linesmen are much more willing to make decisions. A good thing IMHO.

I am certain at the next major championship we'll have the 5 official model thus saving the case for technology.

I think most of the refereeing has been pretty good (exceptions such as Lampard goal, Arg first v Mexico), and the linesmen have been generally the best I've seen in any tournament

Webb and co did well last night, but there will be an element of 'politics' (no Euro ref if it's Europe vs S America in final)

I agree that the reffing has been pretty good - but I've never seen so many bad calls over whether it's a goalkick or a corner.

I think that it has been the worst World Cup for refereeing to be honest. Webb has been the best of a bad bunch.

I think that's very harsh.

I've seen more good than bad performances in this tournament - albeit in the second round of group games when a few of the refs from less well know football nations got games there were some shockers.

The ref last night was superb, the Uzbek guy has been very good, so has the German, Stark, and Webb.

There seems to be much less tolerance of diving; Ronaldo was caught several times last night but his reputation preceded him. My "refereeing moment of the tournament" has got to be the yellow card for asking for a yellow card, I can't even remember who it was now.

The ref last night gave a red card harshly - took the shine of it. The three you mention have been good but a lot of others have been very poor. Brazil-Ivory Coast. Italy-New Zealand.

:shrug:

IMHO there have been a few bad decisions - the red card last night was harsh but not ridiculously so, the Italy penalty was generous but by the letter was a foul - rather than games where the ref hasn't a clue, apart from one or two.

Well the Uzbek has had a QF and will be a ref for one of the SFs too. No sign of Webb

BTW apparently Irmatov, Kassai, De Bleeckere, Webb, Nishimura, Damon and Archundia are the only referees that are left in South Africa.

If it's an all-European final I reckon it's nailed on to be Webb. There was a suggestion Fifa did not want an Englishman in charge of a Uruguay match so soon after a Uruguayan fecked England.

There's a lot of politics involved. Apparently FIFA don't like Refs refereeing the same team in consecutive matches, so it would seem that neither of the two semi final refs will get the final.

Would fifa allow a European ref to referee a european side versus a South American country? If Uruguay get to the final I reckon the Uzbekistan ref will get the final. Although is Uzbekistan technically a European nation now?

He was excluded from the Uruguay match as they are playing UEFA opponents.

He can only referee an all European match next weekend, whether that's the final or the 3rd place play-off.

He was ruled out of the Uruguay quarter-final, against an African nation, for the reason I stated.

Uruguyan officials were in charge of England v Germany and failed to allow England to rightly level at 2-2.

As oppose to most people in this country, Fifa think it affected the outcome of the game.

Agree that it is a bit odd that he didn't get a QF. But the only one he was "qualified" for was Uru v Ghana. All the others had a UEFA team v a non-UEFA team

Slightly surprised that FIFA have made it an all European Final, but credit to them for not shying away from that

Refs never get a semi :eek: and a final. Bit weird he didn't have a quarter though.

Shame that no bugger will be watching it though as BBC always get better viewing figures.
