Hull Match Reports

A great performance after a shaky start and a "perfect" header in the box to gift them their goal. Even so, the whole team must have realised that Hull were there for the taking and pushed on, totally dominating the second half.

Alexander was in his element; his physical presence pressuring the defence with and without the ball and he played the ref well too.;) Charlie ran and ran, dropping back to support in midfield at times. With those two and Simpson harrying their defence, they could never build a move from the back and resorted to... hoofball! Simpson's goal was first class finishing; it dipped and was unstoppable. Weston was very disappointing, though, and seldom beat the 100-year-old Solano, then when he did he wasted most of his crosses, except the one that he mis-kicked and nearly scored with!

Simpson, Bean and Dave worked tirelessly in midfield; the central two had the run of the park as the game wore on and Bean deserved his goal; my guess is that it was a training ground move because Charlie was just looking and waiting for him to run into the space with a true "bullet header"!

The defence held firm; Kev did the job, assisted by Simpson, and started to come forward more and more; Leon won a lot in the air and covered Karleigh's faffing errors a few times; Karleigh himself did exceptionally well but was unused to forwards pouncing on him after he'd got the ball; similarly Woodman got caught a few times and his distribution was poor in the first half hour.

Lee looks an excellent shot stopper but was crowded out and flapped on corners. The save at the end was super.

All in all a dominant showing; we'll tonk someone this season if we get going like that again.

Our bench tonight for a variety of reasons did NOT include

McCarthy
McCracken
Wood
Adams

Now that's what you call a strong squad with real competition for places!!

Will people in Ealing Road get off Richard Lee's back? Chanting 'watford reject' at him is not going to do anything for his confidence, or our chances of doing well. I mean, get on at the other team... not our own players? :rolleyes:

Great night, fantastic performance! Awesome to have Griffin Park buzzing like that again... You just can't beat it under lights. The whole team played well, quick tempo, lots of pressing, players working hard for each other. No shortage of quality either. Excellent to see.

Alexander looks to be striking up a good partnership with Charlie up front. He's good in the air, holds the ball up and uses it intelligently. He also has a terrific shot in that right boot! A really good signing. :)

Well done Bees! More of the same please! :bound:

No, I was in the Ealing Road and it didn't happen. Perhaps he misheard the 'Tottenham reject' chants at John Bostock?

I suggested that those calling JB a wa*ker were to$$ers and stand by it unless someone can give me some justification for it!?!

Cracking game. Best for ages. Great team work and commitment from the lads. Thought we edged the first half and were clearly the better in the second thanks to Alexander and Mac up front, some great defending by Legge and anticipation from KOC and some great saves from Lee. And a great goal from Robbie S.
It was only the first ten minutes we looked a bit iffy but after the first goal Hull got very jittery.
A thoroughly deserved win.
Brilliant saves from both keepers.
Atmosphere was electric .
Really proud of the Bees tonight.

Being fair both sides played their part in a real good cup tie, Hull went ahead early on when Simpson misguided a clearing header across the penalty area straight to Cullen the short blonde and annoying centre forward who smacked it straight past Lee. 1 nil down and Simpson put his head in his hands whilst Scotty looked at the floor disappointed.:(

20 Minutes on the clock, Simpson then scores a sparkling free kick, right footed, whipped up and over the wall like a tracer bullet into the top left hand corner with the Hull keeper grasping 1-1 game on :)

The pace of the game then quickened the Bees found confidence and started to play their passing game, Woodman or KOC to Alexander or Charlie, hold up, lay off to Simpson, Weston, Dave or Bean and some neat triangles and running into space to have Hull scampering and chasing. When it works well, it's very easy on the eye.:sorted:

Second half was good, we were always pressing, never hanging on, Kilbane had a good left footed free kick palmed away by Lee, good for him and good for us. His confidence rising by the minute and so was ours.

Hull hit the bar, but so did Weston with a cross and the Hull keeper made an outstanding save low left handed from an Alexander header. Into the last 5 and Charlie got a run on the back line as he did all game, he looked up and as Alexander and Simpson motored into the six yard box with the Hull back line, waited and picked out an on rushing Bean who stooped to conquer by placing a diving header into the right corner of the net. Fantastic goal in open play to win this cup tie.

No one played badly tonight, Lee was nervy understandably but he had a good night, he's a shotstopper, not a cross-stopper, he also kicks like a mule long left footed punts that caused problems to Hull.
Back four were good, KOC solid and Woodman is a good signing, 5 games and the New Road was murmurring approval tonight, Karleigh was good, powerful heading and pace to match with Leon they were a good pair tonight, effort and talent.

Dave covers the miles and never looks out of place, a real good team player, Beany was finding the Hull midfield a test, but in truth, he never stopped running epitomy of his goal.

Up front - Myles couldn't get round Nobby Solano at right back who's put on a stone since his Newcastle days, but gave him enough to think about, whilst Simpson continues to impress, good speedy wing play, one lovely low cross at the end was top notch, he is a real asset and Saunders and Spillane will have to watch for a little while yet.

Alexander and Charlie put in great shifts, Charlie is the thorn with his guile and craft, whilst Alexander is the bludgeon, heading, chasing and a rasping shot when he gets an sniff of goal.

We've had the stuttering start, but you call it as you see it and today was a game to savour, we can pick on things to improve, but in truth the good far outweighed the bad and tonight is what supporting the Bees is about. :)

As with the Blackburn cup tie at GP in the 80's, the 3k crowd sounded like 8k as we all stood and roared. It was a fine performance, a coming of age performance for this team, it looks good on paper but now we start to see the buds beginning to blossom, someone somewhere is gonna get a hiding from us soon and I can't wait for Rochdale on Saturday to see if we can press on from here! :)

As a 70yr old AOP with some health issues (Ooooooh I have had some truble with my bum lately), Reading these posts have been a real tonic for me. Every one has made super reading, especially the above which I have awarded 5 stars. But in all honesty, every one has been a joy to read. Congratulations to the team and AS for tonights performance and a huge well done to the fans who also played there part brilliantly. I'm begining to warm to Billy Reeves now (wasn't keen on him at first), but Billy and Marky make a splendid duo. Bring on Rochdale now.

best game since beating bradford with nathan's late winner. lee was superb, surely he can't be dropped after that performance?? charlie just never ever stops working. i was proud of every one of them tonight.
it's games like these that makes all those long journeys home after watching rain soaked defeats in distant sh!tholes worthwhile.

not too hard to justify really. he played for our opposition and was therefore fair game. terry evans got stick when he turned out against us for wycombe, so why should bostick get any different treatment? he's a grown man for gawds sake, he knew what to expect.
so stop calling your fellow BEES tossers and concentrate on the positives.

Probably the most entertaining game seen at GP for several seasons. End to end football on the floor from both sides, rather than the "hoof ball" to which we have become accustomed. Excellent entertainment and the right result in the end. Solid all round performance from the Bees - let's hope they can maintain that standard for League matches.

Well I had a semi for almost all of that :blush:

Just wonderful. I picked Alexander for MOM but really you could make a case for almost every single one of them.

They got us out of our seats, they got us singing, they showed desire, movement, intelligence and skill. All against a team stuffed with internationals and even a guy that played in the World Cup.

THAT is now the benchmark :sorted:

Well a great performance IMHO apart from a poor start to both halfs.

This season we have more than just Weston as our likely match winner. We have quality down the right with Simpson and in Gary Alexander there is a bloke who has two good feet, puts himself about and will get you 18 goals.

A great first half performance from the midfield and the only time we looked in danger was a fifteen minute spell when Koren & Co got a strangehold in that department and gaps appeared for their class to exploit.

Jay Simpson looked classy when I saw him play for Arsenal but he didn't get a look in last night. We looked athletic, organised and full of energy. The win gives us just the lift the team needs and, for once, we have a big enough squad not to think a bit of a run in the Cup - and the JPT - will threaten our league form.

We shouldn't get carried away on one performance but this is, again IMHO, potentially the best Bees team (and squad!) for a very, very long time. No doubts we'll be up there at the end of the season and it'll be a season to remember.

Lee did well to, pleased for him as he knew he was under pressure.

Manchester United away and Billy on holiday for me please :)

I thought it was an excellent team performance against a team that were in the premier division last year, especially after going a goal down. Everyone made a contribution but special praise must go to Legge and Osborne (who apart from 1 mistake was excellent), and Alexander. I was also pleased for Lee who made some good saves. Simpson provided 2 or 3 pieces of real quality, whilst KOC, Woodman and Mac also played their part. Weston was a little quiet in the first half but came back in the second period. Don't think you can fault the players for effort, and provides further proof that we are heading in the right direction. Hull are a difficult team to play against and have quality of their own so we should take heart from this win. Hopefully we can push on now with a win on Saturday.

Fantastic game, especially the second half. I thought we had potential when I saw us pre-season but we didn't seem to hang together as a team. Last night put that problem to bed. I can't remember the last time a Brentford result made me that happy!

Best we have played for a long time. I wonder if the fact of playing a 'higher' team helped: both for our motivation and because Hull perhaps played a style that suited us better than some Lge 1 opponents.

Apart from their goal, Hull hardly threatened from open play, though their free kicks were a danger.

Our forwards linked as well as I have seen in recent years.

Let's hope we can keep this up

We will have some fun with that Mac and Alexander partnership, it's starting to work. Simpson is the find of the season and needs to be signed up, I was gutted when we signed him but glad to be so wrong.
Karleigh was top notch last night and Legge was back to something like his best from last season. Woodman continues to do well and KOC had his best game thus far. Lee was excellent all bar his smallness being a problem at some corners, Weston scared them at times but couldn't get past Solano.
The midfield two won their battle with ease and maybe I was a little bit too unimpressed as I thought the Hull two were crap, we made them look crap.
Hull had that extra bit of quality on the break at times but a fully deserved win for us. Two absolute superb goals and what a way for Simpson to make up for that mistake. A top night at GP.

Well done firstly to Richard Lee I hope that performance is a sign of things to come from you and well done to the team on that performance. I haven't enjoyed a match like that for ages. It's coming together as the players gel

Brought my daughter last night as well as my son must bring her again what a lucky charm she is!!.


As for the little brainless ***** that stand to my left who were giving John Bostock a load of abuse your a sad bunch of w****** . He's thoughly nice bloke and not cocky at all I had a number of chats with him last season after matches.

Good performance apart from first 10 mins and couple of blips 2nd half when we gave too much space to the front two and midfield two. Once we closed down those areas they were never able to get a foothold in the game.

Simpson, Macdonald & Alexander were immense tonight and control and movement was there to be seen, which allowed some proper football and we certainly deserved the win and probably by more.

Squad depth is now looking great, and if we can keep them all happy we should be able to challenge up the top end of the table with more performances like that.

Top game. Great atmosphere. If they play like that against Rochdale and the like I'll be very happy. I thought Simpson was excellent apart from his unintentional assist. Adams better be patient or learn another position. Kev was excellent at right back too. Alexander is a proper Bees forward and him and Charlie should give a lot of L1 defenders nightmares.

For them I thought Paddington Bear alike Solano used his experience well and kept Myles quiet. Poor old McShame going off after 20 mins of dogs was funny.

They all played really well. A cracking free kick and a diving header after being behind was marvellous.


Mrs LEB wasn't as impressed as I was with the night after seeing two very drunk Hull 'ladies' getting it on in front of the Hull supporters coach for their entertainment on her way home from work though......:eek:

That performance last night was the best since Andy Scott took over, we played them off the park the whole team was superb, and Gary Alexander IMO is the best player i have seen down there in years.......and Antony Gardner is one off the worst defenders i have ever seen he was shocking.......we are going to be a very very good side this season.

JB yes played for the other team but he was loaned out to us and did very well.
Why boo him? He was more than grateful when we clapped him as he approached the dugout...hes still only 18?
Would we have booed Hamer? Tommy Smith? etc

And if there were chants directed towards Lee your pathetic!!
He played very well last night, shot stopping is very good and has a great drop kick on him that was very direct!

Fully deserved the win. Outplayed Hull.
Walking back after the match, two Hull supporters talking about the game and said fair play there totally outplayed us. ( was good to hear )

Very impressed with Osborne!!

great performance from the bees, overall we were the better team, as has already been said Simpsons goal was excellent dont see too many of them at GP.

Charlie worked tirelessly and set up the winner for Bean with a great cross.Alexander looks a great buy, had one piledriver saved by the keeper, anyone a bit smaller that would have nestled in the top corner and Dukes save from his header was top drawer.Simpson also played a brilliant cross that rolled agonisingly across the goal mouth.

Man Utd, Arsenal or Liverpool away please.

A great game ! as has been said before we needed to give the team time to gel ....

I brought four neutrals with me last night and they all left GP with a bit of Brentford in their hearts :love2: they said they would come to another game too :sorted:

we were all over them at the end. their keepers save from charlie was very special i must admit. two great goals from us. exciting times if we can keep this momentum going. still buzzing. :grey:

Great game. So glad I decided to go at the last minute :D

Aside from our other options up front, in Charlie and Alexander we have a partnership who are strong, intelligent and I believe will score plenty of goals.
