Hunt, Elder combo

Agree it could be a useful weapon but who would you drop from our regular starting XI to accommodate Hunt ?

last 10 mins need a goal put on hunt for the throws

Elder is not really dominant in the air, to win the ball enough.

Do you think ? I think Nathan wins an enormous amount of ball in the air.

A premiership scout who is an acquaintance of mine has seen Elder play and for it's worth I give a rough outline of his appraisal. On the plus side big, strong and not afraid to put himself about a bit. Generally quite a handful for most lower league central defenders. On the minus side no composure whatsoever, with a very poor first touch. Also for his size a poor technique when heading the ball.

He went on to say that in his opinion he would never be a prolific goal scorer at league level, but worth his place in most lower league sides because of his nuisance value.

Before everyone starts screaming at me, these are not my words, but those of a man who has found many players who have graced the shirt of the club who employs him. Also before anyone asks he was not looking at Elder with a view to taking him on.

Funnily enough the match he saw Elder play was at Lincoln at the end of last season.

My appraisal of Elder is exactly the same as your premiership scout acquaintance, Alan D. He's the sort of player you need at this level; he keeps at least two defenders occupied, which is good if you have players who can exploit the spaces, like Charlie Mac, Williams and, latterly, Bean. His header accuracy ratio is very poor and (as my compatriots around me in New Road are aware), sometimes he has the touch of a chainsaw! We can play with a MacDonald & Bowditch type pairing up front away from home but the aggression of Elder is more needed at home.

I am living in Germany and haven't seen Elder play, but I get the same impression from reading reports here and match threads during games: he's a nuisance value but lacking technique and is not going to be much of a goal scorer in the long run. We really need two forwards who can put the ball in the back of the net. Either that or a free-scoring midfield, and we don't have either of these.

I think he agrees with most of us then?Maybe Bowditch and Elder should be used at seperate times in the games to allow different styles to bother defenders

Elder has similar qualities to Owusu, crap touch, misses more than he scores but I think Elder is stronger and better in the air than Lloyd was

My view is that he has progressed and improved all aspects of his game since that scouting report over 6 months ago.

I'm glad we have Elder, not Owusu.

I'd agree with you NLB, needs to get consistency into his repertoire.

What I do think is that at this level we cannot afford to rely on two relatively little guys up front every week. The centre backs are such big lumps by and large that Charlie and Bowwditch would get outmuscled, bullied out of games and the ball wouldn't stick up front.

I believe we need options and at times we may need to rely on power and combat strength with strength using Nathan, at other times I'd opt for quick ball to feet and movement where the football brains of both Charlie and Deano should benefit.

The fact is if we were in a higher league the combo I'd prefer would be Deano and Charlie but we're not so Nathan vital.

Owusu at his best was much better than Elder!

Poole scored 14 goals from midfield last season but cannot get into the side at the moment as his workrate is poor. Elder has 2 players on him every game and takes a lot of stick. IMO he is better than other similar players we have had in that position, McCammon/Willock/onubajie (Whatever his name was) , He does a job for us and IMO he gets a lot of unfair stick on this site. Lets be honest if he was any better he wouldn`t be at Brentford.

I think we sometimes forget how inexperienced at League level Elder was when he came to us. He started only 2 games for Brighton. He is bound to be a bit in and out in his first full season of proper week in week out league football.

He is by no means a finished article and I think there has been some improvement. I also agree that he is or potentially is better than most of the similar players we have had in recent years.

He will be useful in the run in although so too would Bowditch so hopefully we will have both and can mix it up a bit with Charlie Mac.

Re the Hunt throw ins. Obviously a useful attacking weapon and almost as good as a corner is many positions. Maybe it will be our corner king Marcus Bean that will benefit the most !

Hunt has to be worth his place though on more than just a long throw. Poole scores into double figures each season and can't get in because the rest of his game is lacking. Hunt will need to be looked at similarly. Shame he can't play right back really....

some people talk some sh*te about Elder, he is an important part of our team and our chances for promotion, Bowditch IMO is a similar option to what Connell should've been, a different type of player you can use to play the ball around with, we need Elder and Bowditch IMO so we can change the way we play during games.

Hunt, Elder combo

When Elder plays well we look unbeatable IMO.

Only problem is he can't maintain that every week, which I believe is more down to his fitness then anything else in all honesty.

Shame the bob taylor video of goals wasnt available before christmas, as i would have bought it for nathan to show him, you dont have to be in the box to score your goals .But outside aswell from any angle, im positive his got it but i just think its a confidence thing which makes him too laid back I M O

elder is still only 21

strikers i think peak at 25-28

Hunt, Elder combo

I think you'll find he's 24 in April so he should be good for the back end of next season them.......:)

Hunt, Elder combo

how times change.... i'd have :owusu: back tomorrow in place of elder, one of the best players in the last decade IMO

Owusu was great the first time around, his height and speed was really useful. His second spell, not so great.
If we got him again, he will lose all respect he has with us as he is getting on a bit and is not the same player we had the first time around, and, in some parts, the second time.

Really? That may say something about the quality of our players over the last ten years.

All about opinions I guess.
Lloyd scored a lot of goals for us but, oh, the misses. All those glaring misses.

To call him a Brentford legend is doing a disservice to scores of better players over the years.

We've had some really shockingly dire big strikers in the last few years but by a long way I wouldn't put Elder in that category. As I remember Owusu was a bit raw when he first came to us and developed over a period of time.

Elder has an ability to make things happen one way or another whether by his sheer strength, energy or ability. Graceful he may not, a premiership player in the making probably neither but as this level he will carve out a decent career. I bet Jackson for one was very pleased he was suspended yesterday.

I'll say it again but Lincoln last season was probably NE's worst game for us. He may have scored but it wasn't his finest hour, I'm not saying he is Prem class but judging a player on one performance is a little bit harsh. NE has thrown in one or two bad ones this season but his value to teh team is huge and had he been about for that 2nd half at Lincoln he would have halted the ball coming straight back, he would have competed for the hoofs and made Kovacs's day slightly harder.

I couldn't agree more. This guy was not there to look at Elder, but as he had a match to watch in the area during the morning he told me he was going to watch my mob play in the afternoon. He asked is there anyone special he should look out for. I simply said tell me what you think of Elder, as the Brentford faithful seem to think he will be a very useful weapon for us. I added that I saw him at Chesterfield and really couldn't see what all the fuss is about.

Hence he gave me his view which was much kinder than I expected after what I saw at Chesterfield. Anyway as NLB suggests he has probably improved greatly in the last six months.
