I guess adequate cover and good offer are both somewhat subjective. But imagine seeing it from a buyer’s perspective. If I’m not already in discussion with Bees, and I’ve now heard Igor news, naturally I’d expect a tougher negotiation. Whether or not that’s how we roll, that’s what we would expect from another club.

No! I’ve already said I think we should cash in a number of times. But you’ve got to think about all perspectives. Firstly, say we did accept £30-40 odd mill, considering we got Neal in to cover Ivan’s ban, it’s likely we would need another incoming up top. I’m sorry but if you’re playing 3 up top, leaving say KLP on the bench and THAT’s IT. By any measure that’s not adequate cover. Plus as a buyer the fact the player bought to replace my target is now off, shifts the context of the deal

Has this been confirmed as a reoccurrence of the injury he suffered in May or a completely new one?
If it’s an unrelated new meniscus injury then that’s unbelievably bad luck.
If it’s a relapse of the same tear then questions have to be asked as to why he was brought back so soon as it looks really poor judgment now.

I’m hoping and it’s probably being very optimistic that the time frame is worst case. If he comes back earlier that’s great if he doesn’t then that’s what we expected, I think the club would be very careful not to say his return is sooner and ends up longer as has happened before and leaves everyone frustrated. Like wise i understand they can’t put an exact time on it.

I like your optimism but given the recovery times of our other injured players I would be surprised if he is back by late 2024. Also, the fact he will have had barely any pre season he won't be able to play competitive games as soon as he comes back. Coupled with the fact it is a new player in a new league and needing the required time to adapt, I don't imagine he will have much impact this season. Certainly not before Christmas

Should not affect Toney etc. This could easily have happened on 1st Sept after all. If we planned on having 5 quality forwards to choose from (Igor, Schade, Wissa, Mbeumo and KLP), we surely would have been accounting for one of them to have at least a couple of months out - given our track record, it would be madness not to
But i daresay we were planning on having someone else anyway - be it Toney or another young recruit with potential once Ivan leaves.
Ivan needs a buyer. If there is no buyer, we can't sell him. And in that scenario, does he sit around on lower wages for another year, or can we tempt him somehow?
All this must drive Matt crackers. How many of his recent big-money investments have had issues? Ajer's 3 seasons in with regular small injuries... Hickey missed nearly all of last season... Damsgaard taken nearly two years to get up to scratch... Schade unavailable for the majority of his time here so far... but it is what it is, there's just no way of guaranteeing their health...

Not sure tbh. I reckon it would be "best news possible" given our recent history re injuries.
Doesn't matter anyway as no-one knows with absolute certainly the date he will "return".

One of Thomas's failings last season was not giving the youngsters enough time on the bench and minutes on the pitch. He seems reluctant sometimes to give them that extra responsibility. I think he is improving on that though. Otherwise what's the point of the b team

Fingers crossed but I won't be banking on it. Always seems to be a lag between players being 'fit' and then then seeing them in the matchday squad

The club statement said "The striker will now begin a period of recovery and rehabilitation and is expected to return towards the end of the year.". Why would they say he is expected to return when he isn't?

I would agree that "expected to return" to you and me and everyone else would mean being available for selection. But does it mean "expected to start"?
Anyway, "expected to" is very different from "will". As we all know.

Yeah the lad Morgan seems to have made a bit of impression in preseason, so maybe he'll be an option. Or can MPH be one of the front 3?
Anyway, i repeat: anyone who thinks we were planning with zero contingency for any such injury happening to anyone ever, is living in Cloud Cuckoo Land, and talking as if our management team have done that is crazy. They'll be fully aware of the "odds" of this sort of thing happening.

"Towards the end of the year" simply means that there's no way of knowing with any precision. I suspect that the expression is simply the club manageing expectations. If the return happens in mid-October, that would mean two months out - annoying but manageable with the resources we have. If it's mid-December, it's half the season out. Altogether more serious.

If Ivan leaves then we are just one knock to Bryan away from an issue up front. I think we will need to buy and not wait on any potential Toney move. As for Thiago, we don't have a great rep for getting players back by due date of late so hard to feel optimistic.

His original injury was (I think) lateral hyper-extension of the knee joint.....that was what Club Brugge put out as a press release and there was no mention of any tear to the ligament structures.
The short timescale of recovery and subsequent injury to this very same knee does make you wonder if this is a related injury though.

Think the other reason it feels so crushing is that whereas in almost every other position we have a promising youngster coming through, arguably up front that’s not the case
