Impotent Bees

Hopefully Eriksen and Josh DaSilva will remedy this to some extent. However given how big we are on the analytics side of the game, have we forgotten the most important metric of all: How frequently we are likely to put the ball in the back of the net (notwithstanding a complete inability to defend corners also)? Outside of Toney the rest of our 9 starting outfield players today had amassed just 55 goals in 850 games (and 35 of those by one player) whilst playing for The Bees. So over the course of a 38 game season we might expect the entire remainder of our team to score a whopping 2.5 goals. Also not forgetting that the majority of those performances have come against weaker opposition in The Championship.

Nothing underlines our impotence more than our central midfield duo of Norgaard and Jensen who have amassed a total of 5 goals in over 200 performances - less than a goal a season. These two - a completely non-scoring central midfield really should never be in the side together, surely? I knew it was pretty bad and our reliance on Ivan is huge, but I was shocked by quite how bad these stats are.

Henry 4 in 143
Roeslev 1 in 53
Bech 3 in 47
Jansson 1 in 88
Ajer 0 in 13
Janelt 6 in 68
Norgaard 2 in 91
Jensen 3 in 116
Canos 35 in 231

Now do the same for Norwich, Newcastle, Burnley, Everton, Leeds, even Man United.

We could do with scoring more and conceding fewer. True but trite. And yes, not having Mbeumo in the team today did mean we missed a player who has given us a lot of goals and assists. Your selection of players and the time period is odd though. Almost designed to look terrible.

It would be fairer to look at the whole team and to look at their scoring records this season. Sergi aside almost half the goals you’ve put down have actually been scored this season in 23 PL games.

Or, if you’re looking longer term over full Bees careers, it looks somewhat rosier putting in Mbeumo and JDS. Broaden it to full careers and Eriksen and Wissa make it a lot rosier!

I can't be bothered but would suggest that we compare very unfavourably to Leeds who regularly score goals through Harrison, Raphina, Dallas and Klich. Burnley get a fair few from their centre backs. I'm not even going to mention Man Utd who despite being poor this season have goals all throughout their team. If we are comparing ourselves to Norwich then we are bang in trouble.

Didn’t realise Roselev had made over 50 appearances. Well done lad.

0 from their defenders and grand total of 3 from Fred & Mctominay. Rico is on 2, Vitaly 2, Canos 2, Pontus 1, Roerslev 1, Norgaard 1, Pinnock 1 so we're up on United's total even though they have goals throughout the team. Add Cavani, & Sancho's goals to their amount it's still less than what our defensive players have.
Burnley have 15 goals, 6 from Cornet and 3 from Woods who no longer plays from them. The remaining 9 throughout the entire team is less than what our defensive players have.
Leeds is 8 goals from players who aren't Bamford, Rodrigo, Raphina & Harrison (I'll included Dan James in your total for an extra 2 but no way are Raphina & Harrison defensive players like you just mentioned) is still less than what our defensive players have.

Cba with Norwich, what's the point eh.

HTH

Just a bit of perspective for your constructive criticism.
Ps Zanka has scored 1 too

To be fair to the OP, I think there is a valid point in there that our starting XI relies heavily on 2 players for goals. We've not had the luxury of starting with 3 attackers as we did for most of last season, nor have we had a regular goalscoring midfielder in Josh's absence. Canos' goalscoring record is largely as an attacker, not a wing back.

In some ways I think we're, perhaps, fortunate that a lot of different players have chipped in with 1 or 2 goals this season, otherwise our GF column would look decidedly like Norwich or Burnley's.

Of course, we have reasons to be optimistic that Josh and CE will help with the goal scoring threat from midfield in the final 15 games. It'll be nice to see a few 20 yarders fly in...I think we've only had 1 so far!?

If any of those xG are attributed to Norgaard and Jensen, the centre of our midfield an area you should be able to rely on at least half a dozen goals a season then they are null and void as those two basically don't score. Any chance falling to one of them might as well be rated 0.0. That's not to say I don't appreciate their other talents individually by the way.

Their xG vs. actual would be an interesting comparison. The crux of the original post was that I sincerely hope the rebalance of our midfield with Eriksen an DaSilva addresses this significantly. I am hopeful that this will be the case.

Oh and it would be lovely if someone could help us defend corners again. The xG for a corner for the other team might as well be 1.0 at the moment.

Surely having Mbuemo and Wissa missing skews the figures?

It is the formation. Toney scored more goals in a 4-4-3. We all remember BMW. We have had the loss of our goal scoring midfield player for over a year in Josh.

why the surprise?

Well yes it does, but we fielded our strongest team on the day and both wouldn't have started anyhow. Arguably Mbeumo (1 in 4) could have directly replaced Sergi (1 in 5) so not by that much. As I say that the main point I was making that it will be nice when we no longer have a completely non scoring central midfield in the coming weeks (hopefully).

I was selecting today's starting XI with the stats based on their whole Brentford career (which improves their stats). The unwritten statement being if that team is the best we can field on the day we need to hope Ivan's on song as otherwise when we (currently inevitably) let a few goals in, we've got no chance.

I think we'll get through to the end of the season OK, but if we want to avoid going down in our second season like Sheffield United, Huddersfield, etc. then we need to make 3 or 4 good signings over the summer.

We picked up lots of points at the start of the season by being stronger, faster, taller than our opponents. That has fizzled out as our promotion honeymoon period has ended, conceding goals has become a habit, and other teams are more aware of us. So we now need to work on playing better quality football, and creating/scoring more goals from open play.
