IPL 2019

Happen to be in India this week for the start of the new IPL season.
Some pretty eventful matches so far, but Jos Buttler has just been "Mankaded" by Ravi Ashwin, i.e. run out when backing up at the non-strikers end.

Disgusting way to get a player out in my book, especially as Buttler was in no way taking the piss (i.e rushing down the pitch).
I think Ashwin's reasoning was based on the fact that Buttler was smashing them all over the place & this was his only answer.

Ravi Ashwin has just gone a long way down in my estimation & has done the broader good of the game in terms of playing in the right spirit no favours whatsoever.
Really hope Rajasthan Royals go on & smash Kings XI Punjab, although Steve Smith who came in when JB wandered off cussing & blinding looks like he has forgotten what a bat is actually for

Thought mode of dismissal had been outlawed, after Kapil Dev did it.

Was he warned by the bowler first? If so, fair enough, if not, unsportsmanlike.

Have you seen it. More than unsportsmanlike, he stopped his delivery to wait for Buttler to go out of the crease.

No not yet. Sounds like sharp practice and that anything goes in the IPL. Shame. What about The Spirit of Cricket?

Seen it and it was really unpleasant by Ashwin. Butter was backing up normally, did not even watch what was going on behind him and was not seeing an unfair advantage when the bowler slowed up and seemed to wait for him to leave the crease before removing the bails with relish.

Poor - very poor.

IPL 2019

Blimey, I always thought Ashwin seemed like a decent bloke but that was ****ish!

IPL 2019

Imagine the fall out if Ashwin did that in a game against Pakistan!

IPL 2019

Appalling behaviour from Ashwin. I would question if this constitutes a delivery stride as he has no intention of bowling the ball and waits for Butter to leave his crease. This would be impossible for a pace bowler to do and to some extent the rule needs looking at for spin bowlers.

Any danger of a link ?

I fear this will now be a common tactic now used. The umpire should have asked whether the bowler would like to withdraw his appeal, or is that not possible now? Could have scenarios where a slow bowler goes one stage further and leaves it even later and instead of bowling spins around and throws the stumps down, or even easier throws the ball underarm backwards to ht stumps. The batsman's eyes will always be on the other batsman so wont know that the bowler is doing this until too late. Will mean no longer can the batsman walk in with a bowler as his natural momentum will take his bat past the popping crease.

The law re this particular run out will now be changed. It has to.

Poor from Ashwin. Poor from the umpires IMO too. Ashwin stopped his run up and delivery. (This is different to other instances of mankadding.) Then waited for Buttler to leave the crease. There was no jump on the bowler or delivery from Buttler to gain an advantage.

Piss poor and the law makers need to rethink this particular situation.

Reading the law this morning it states "to the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball". He removes the bails long after he would have expected to release the ball, so should have been given not out I feel. Still very poor from Ashwin.

Should have been called a dead ball. There is the thought that the IPL will be loving the publicity gained from this appalling act of sharp practice.

Shocking decision in the Mumbai v Bangalore game yesterday.
A huge no ball off the last ball of the game was missed.
Kohli was furious, which makes it hilarious.

on Ashwin - agree with everyone. Shocking but has history and well he did use to play for Chennai. I call it cheating.

Saw parts of the game today - Warner does look in great nick. Australia are in some form in the shorter format recently and with Warner Smith and Starc to come could be contenders for WC.

Just seen this for first time. Complete and utter tw*ttery. How can he even think of doing that?

Lesson to learn though: even though this kind of thing very rarely happens, always keep your head at least half-turned towards the bowler so you can see what he is doing, even if peripherally. The way Buttler was backing up (i.e. fairly!) he could easily have avoided his fate here.

I hate the IPL. And the BBL. And any other pumped up slog-fest. It's pretty much everything I don't want cricket to be. The Ashwin incident probably sums up the morals of the format.

Agree 100%.

20/20 leagues seem to have the "Win at any cost" mentality that is simply not in the spirit of the game. Cheating and over-the-top, aggressive sledging seem to be actively encouraged.

It's dragging cricket to the gutter.

And the commentary. Oh my days. Kevin Pietersen. That bloke who sounds like a 70s cartoon character. The hoik to a sh*t ball over a reduced boundary is not the greatest single thing that has happened on a cricket pitch every time. Tried to watch it yesterday and actually had to turn it off because the racket was distracting from my work. Ridiculous, you've got to have the cricket on when you work from home. ;)

Let’s face it for those of us brought up watching the traditional game we are never going to engage with the IPL.

It’s not aimed at us - rather at millennials where being there at an event and taking selfies, shouting and snap chatting is far more important than the match itself.

I blame the English for inventing 20/20 :D

The IPL is just fun and has made a lot of poor cricket players rich for slogging a ball. Give me Pujara batting in a test match over the 20/20 game anytime of the week. I have been to IPL games and also the after parties and even the after after parties. Some would be shocked in how well known cricketers act. IPL has a history of lets say dodgy results. Make your minds up what I mean.

The saviour is that we have had some excellent test match cricket around the world in the last 18 months. The biggest supporter of test match cricket is Kohli. The danger for test match cricket is when the best players prefer other formats. It hasn't happened yet ......

I played 20/20 from approx. age 12 onwards i.e. 1973. There was 20/20 open age cricket midweek too (or variations on the theme e.g. 14 x 8 ball overs). I played in such leagues in the early 80s, and already some batsmen were playing imaginative improvised shots and one or two medium paced bowlers were starting to mix it up ahead of the likes of Dermot Reeve, with variations of pace, line, length, swing. Pretty sure Australia had similar formats, so I'm sure other countries must have too. So not sure who invented the format, but it has been around for an awful long time.

T20 hat tricks shouldn't count. I say 4 wickets in a row is an equivalent. :)

I have some stories on Aussies and England players so nothing would shock me. Particuarly as one of the people I would expect to be the best behaved is one of the worst.
