Is Fouling Cheating? (Split Thread)

I would define cheating as an intentional act of breaking the laws/rules to obtain an advantage over the opposing team. If a player deliberately handles the ball it's a foul. Is that cheating ? If it's on the half way line and the ref sees it ? If it's catching the ball to prevent an opposition player scoring ? If it's putting the ball in the net and the ref doesn't see it ? All three examples of the same offence , handball , a foul. Was " The Hand of God " cheating ? Taking a dive (simulation) is misconduct ,unsporting behaviour, a foul and according to the posts on here cheating.

I think the word for me is "intentional" which defines if a foul is cheating or not. But does it matter ? As long as the officials keep on top of it and penalise the culprits I don't care what name the pundits call it.

YES IT IS

Most fouls are committed without intent to foul so no it's not. The so called "professional" foul undertaken with intent is, but accepted if in your favour or unacceptable if against you!!

Lets flip it around.

It's the last game of the season, it's either the Bees needing one point (a draw) or their opponents on the day needing 2 points to get the final promotion place into the premiership.

In the last minute, the score is 0-0 - and suddenly their striker gets through. Bentley rushes out, slips, and their striker has an empty net with no-one on the goal line to clear. As he is about to go into the penalty area., Bentley reaches out and pulls his leg from under him. "Needs must". Their striker goes down, the game ends, no goals and the other team goes into the top flight.

Would you condone it - or would you rather we say sorry and when the free kick is taken move out of the way and let them score the goal they should have scored?

I know which I would choose.

Do you remember the Doncaster match? That was heartbreaking. We needed the points, they needed a draw. They tried to prevent us from getting the points but the referee saw fit to give us a penalty (which was missed). If this happened outside the area and we were about to score, would you have been pee'd off that Doncaster stopped us from scoring and having the chance to have gone up?
But surely in your example if it finished 0-0 in your example it would have been us and not the other team who went into the top flight? I'm not sure this makes sense.

I was asking if he would be happy or not that Bentley brought him down preserving the 0-0 or allowing the striker through on goal to the empty net and thus scoring a winner (and us not getting that said point).
He was asking if we would be annoyed if the roles were reversed. Of course we would. We would be happy if we did it, and pissed off it they did it.
Either way, its fine margins.

I've often heard us chant CHEAT, CHEAT, CHEAT when an opponent has dived in
the box, and was Maradona Cheating or was it a Professional Goal? With the
Hand of God goal.

It was cheating plain and simple.
The chanting you mention is nearly always when someone dives looking for a pen or writhes in agony having been tackled and then sprints 10 seconds after play resumes.
The reason it was cheating with that nasty Argentinian scumbag was that he had no intention of heading the ball and deliberately played in with his hand, celebrating immediately to further deceive the officials. All the more unforgivable as he had been blessed with a talent that nobody since has come near to.

Surely the definition of cheating is to do something illegal and get away with it (like Maradonna's hand of God). That is not the case with a professional foul, because it results in conceding a free kick/penalty and, possibly a card (i.e. you don't get away with it).

Yes, likewise I have never heard anyone chant 'cheat' when someone commits a foul.

Exactly, I think you have summed that up perfectly.

Fair point

Is a player who is caught diving less of a cheat than the one who gets away with it? Similarly, what if a player intends to commit a professional foul but the referee lets him clatter the player and doesn't blow the whistle - is that player now a cheat, because he got away with it? I would personally define cheating based on the actions of the perpetrator (i.e. intent to break the rules) rather than whether the referee spots it or not. I'm quite happy for Brentford players to cheat though...

I'd say that a professional foul is cheating as its a deliberate act to stop a potentially worse outcome (shot on goal/ goal etc) than a free kick, yellow card etc.

As other old 'uns will remember, one of the things that led to the concept of a "professional foul" was Willie Young hacking down Paul Allen in the 1980 FA Cup Final. Prior to that, everything was fair game.
