Don’t think he is the only one either (on that sort of dough) they are in a very sorry state.

Jack Rodwell

Surely he still has to turn up for training?

Jack Rodwell

I believe he has been consigned to training with the under 23's as he is not in the first team squad and I guess hasn't been for some time, so Coleman probably wouldn't know where he is. Think Coleman is being a little economic with the truth there and maybe a bit bitter about it all?

Jack Rodwell

Player power. He's got a contract for another year. Will still be earning £42K per week!!! What can the Club do?

Think you will find that he has vanished off the face of the earth but is still trousering £70k pw !!!!!!!!

Sunderland have got themselves in a right old mess both on and off the field however surely they can refuse to play if, as Coleman states, he has not been seen anywhere and is not training with them. I believe he has not played all season but still will have earned over £3.6m

It is no wonder the connection between players and fans is getting less and less

Jack Rodwell

Read somewhere that Cattermole has 2 years left on his contract on £60k a week i think it was.
He is way over the hill.
Bonkers management at that club

Jack Rodwell

Coleman has clarified that he doesn't know where the player is mentally rather than physically....

Jack Rodwell

There's something like 22/23 clubs who have dropped to the third tier from the Premier League. A lot of it is gross mismanagement. I can only see more clubs going the way Sunderland have. Villa very nearly did it last season

................spoke to some nice Sunderland fans at the away game and they seem to think he is on a lot more than that.............

He takes a % drop next year hence the revised £42K salary (£166K per month - Mental).

Heard a stat on a.podcast I was listening to that Sunderland have something like the third most debt in world football....ahead of the likes of psg !

Jack Rodwell

He was referring to his mental state not his location - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/43910316

"Sunderland manager Chris Coleman says he "doesn't know" where want-away midfielder Jack Rodwell is. Coleman later clarified that he knows where Rodwell is physically but does not know where he is mentally."

Obviously the money is great but I still think it odd that someone who is still young and has been capped by England would be apparently so uninterested in continuing to have a career in the game. Who would give him anything more than a modest pay as you play contract when he’s a free agent at the end of next season? If that.

Probably USA China or even India

Jack Rodwell

It is staggering how badly run some professional clubs are. Sunderland must be one of the worst run clubs.

Jack Rodwell

Didn't coleman say they offered him a pay off and he said no thanks so he is now on gardening leave.

If the club was properly run he’d be reporting in and being monitored. It isn’t so he isn’t.

Surely he can be sacked for breach or frustration of contract? OK they lose a fee but sometimes it's worth it.Perhaps it simply takes a club to have the balls to do it.As far as l can see it's no different to me refusing to do my job and expecting to be paid. Any lawyers out there?

It depends on a lot of stuff we don’t know. If he’s been told to train with the U23s then told by the U23 coach not to bother he could at any point claim constructive dismissal and get not only his contract paid up but additional damages on the basis of now being basically unemployable. It is quite possible he’s complied with his contract and instructions as far as they go - the contract won’t have anything about trying his hardest as it would be too vague to be enforceable. At the time and in the circumstances he joined as a £12m player recently capped by England I don’t think Sunderland would have been in any position to insist upon detailed performance metrics being a contractual requirement. Even in an ordinary job “not really fancying it but working to the letter of your contract” would make sacking difficult.

by the way, i think being told to train with the reserves is seen as (potentially) a form of "bullying" by employers these days and is frowned upon... there was a case here, but i don't know if it got any further... ok, it's "training alone", though there are a few references here to "first-team activities" and "pressure to break contract" too: https://www.fifpro.org/news/biabiany-abuse-akin-to-mobbing/en/

Ta. You are right. We don't know exactly what has gone on.

My grandson was mascot at Sunderland and behind the unfortunate scenario is redundancy for normal people whilst Rodwell picks his massive wages up. I was told him most of the people who rely on the extra income to prop up in most cases minimum wages would be let go. It is incredibly incompetent how the Sunderland board looks after the already very wealthy footballers who it would appear are oblivious to the bigger picture. The owner Ellis Short aledgerly didn't think there was relegation from the Premier.

I read a stat about Adam Johnson that since 2015-16 no one has had more assists for Sunderland then AJ and hes been inside for two

We had one of those until the summer.

Pedant alert. Can it be a free transfer if the player is a free agent?

Yeah, well in the case of reporting an incoming, as he's free...but yeah, when talking about outgoings, "X has been given a free transfer" seems to mean all manner of things, like placed on the transfer list...contracted but allowed to leave for free right now...or will be released at the end of his contract.

Ditto Tom Ince.

Living off his father's name.

Didn't he think he was good enough to play for Inter Milan?

Been bouncing around the Championship, achieving nothing.
