Jamie Carragher

For those who missed this afternoon's match at Highbury, some low-life gooner threw a coin at Carragher while his back was turned. Carragher proceeded to pick up the coin and hurl it back into the crowd, with a very low probablility of hitting whoever threw it in the first place (given that he wouldn't have had a clue who that was).

The ref saw what happened and gave him a straight red card.

I understand that he was severely provoked, but I think that a lengthy ban is essential. If the original culprit is identified, I imagine he's looking at a long ban, if not a lifetime ban, from attending football matches. I haven't been able to think of a compelling reason why Carragher should receive more lenient treatment.

This is the same situation as the Cantona thing in a way, becuase although the fan may get in sh*t for it now, that will only happen because of Carraghers' retaliation. If Carragher had ignored him, just like the hundreds of other times a coin or something has been thrown onto the pitch, the fan would, in all likelihood, have got away with it.

But then, if Bergkamp hadn't been sent off, the coin may never have been thrown in the first place...

Jamie Carragher

He's a complete idiot, one could be kind and say it was a spur of the moment thing, but really his action as a highly paid prof footie player is beyond belief.

We saw against Millwall last year what an object thrown into the crowd can do, image if he had split open some kids' head. Methinks he is in for heavy treatment from the football authorities and I can't say i'd blame them...

All this throwing of objects since Cardiff v Leeds is getting out of hand, and although we all laughed at the kids on the pitch against Brighton its a potentially worrying trend, somebody soon is going to get their ground closed down.

Jamie Carragher

I gather that Carragher has now made a very full and grovelling apology. However, I still think that it's important that he gets a hefty punishment. I think the comparison with Cantona is telling. The biggest difference is that Cantona knew he was attacking the person who was shouting abuse at him. Carragher was simply randomly attacking the crowd. I have always been a bit of a fan of his, and I'm sure that the incident was out of character. However, I think it is one of the most shocking things I have ever seen a professional footballer do.

Jamie Carragher

Carragher probably wasnt very amused that he was having coins thrown at him because Bergkamp decided to stamp on his ankle.

Having said that it was a disgraceful action, but one in all fairness which he clearly didnt think about and i think fairly obviously didnt intend to hurt anyone, perhaps an 8 to 10 match ban?

When will footballers start to use their brains?

Jamie Carragher

would agree entirely with super bee...

hope the ref doesn't get any sh*t for yesterday, cos he did very well, all very deserving red cards, tho i dunno if there's an actual rule that gives him the right to send carragher off for that

"Ungentlemanly conduct"??!!

Jamie Carragher

Mike Riley said afterwards that Carragher was sent off for violent conduct. 8-10 matches sounds about right to me. The FA and other authorities will also have to start taking serious action about missiles being thrown onto the pitch. Arsenal have talked about action being taken against anyone who is identified as being involved in this incident. I applaud their intentions, but doubt this will stop the morons (incidentally, I think we have some). I think fellow fans need to give serious thought to shopping the idiots.

By the way, will the police take action against Carragher?

Would not have thought so,as it was a provoked attack and would cost the taxpayers alot of money simply for him to go to court and get about 10 hours community survice,a slight tap on the wrists and fined,to us about the equivilent of a small clubs overdraft, but to him loose change.

Still.....you never know!

Also, thats gotta be a first,me,dan and ed agreeing on something!

Jamie Carragher

I raised the same point in the pub about him being charged by the police as well as the FA. It would surely be double standards if he weren't.

Also noticed that a few more coins came back after he'd returned that one as well.

In the current climate of referees being pilloried for their handling of high profile games, I thought Mike Riley had a superb game and each of the red cards were correct.

On the other hand, Phil Thompson's reaction to the Carragher sending off was a disgrace and he should be brought to book as well.

Jamie Carragher

I wonder if Carragher would have been so brave to throw a coin back at Cardiff or Millwall fans?

Brave or stupid?

Whether the PC brigade like it or not, recent incidents of pitch invasions, missile throwing, players getting sent off and doing spur of the moment things, make for excelllent viewing.
The last six weeks have made brilliant viewing. Keeps you right on the edge of your seat and I'm sure the likes of BBC and SKY are rubbing their hands with glee!

Jamie Carragher

had the argument about this yesterday in the pub. Whilst I think Carragher was a fool for retaliating, however, I don't know why players should be subject to this treatment. This business of throwing things at players needs to be stamped out of the game. If I was sat next to the buffoon who did this I would inform the stewards.

Got to agree with Finchbee. I'd do the same, no one should have to put up with stuff like that.

Apparently, according to some ref on 5live last nite, there is NO rule that says Carragher must be sent off for what he did. Ungentlemanly conduct? Someone explain this to me because I don't understand that one.

Surely this ruins what chance Carragher has of being in the World Cup squad? Not only has he "brought the game into disrepute" or whatever, but he's probly gonna get a lengthy ban for it, meaning he's got less chance of impressing Sven Gordon Eriksson. All for one moment's madness!

One other thing: if I were a Liverpool fan, I'd be pretty miffed at him, as before he went they'd got themselves into a very promising position: Arse down to 9 men so 2 man advantage, and they (Arse) were clearly in disarray because of the quick sendings off in such a short space of time. But he walked and so gave some of the impetus back to Arse.

I don't think he should get more than 6 games tho.

I imagine he was sent off for violent conduct or something similar.

I'd sooner watch a good exciting game of football than a bunch of mindless morons causing bother. But then, I suppose that makes me a member of the loony left and the PC brigade, so I'll shut up, as my opinion obviously counts for nothing.

Unlikely - that section of the Lower East is home to most of the Gooners - helps explain why the OB did not move in and try an arrest.

Jamie Carragher

Isn't there a rule that players can be sent off/cautioned for 'inciting the crowd'? I vaguely remember Gary Brabin being sent off once when, after scoring a goal, the home fans threw a trumpet onto the pitch, he promptly picked it up, blew it and got sent off.

If the fans pay £35 to watch a match only to have it ruined by sendings off (Bergkamp didn't even make contact; Richard Wright got their first; Carragher wouldn't have been sent off if the other two weren't), and its players who are paid upwards of £20,000 a week doing this whether through diving or whatever, maybe they need some discipline that Managers struggle to instill these days.

Yeah...Gold Range are so hard, they'll sort it out

tommy, take the gooner-tinted specs off... bergkamp was a 2-footed challenge, AT carragher's ankle, and you DO NOT have to make contact to be sent off for that, it's the intent... and keown's was a clear red card, fouled him for 10 yards and wright still only just got there first

I think Bergkamp could very easily have escaped with a yellow there. I wouldn't expect Tommy the Half a Bee to speak out against Arsenal though

Lets put this into some perspective. If you to the theatre would you hurl a coin or have any right to do so ? They are working for their living, irregardless of what they are paid they should have to put up with things been thrown. This is just thuggish behaviour. Would you like if you got thrown something at you at work ?

I presume you mean they shouldn't have to put up with things being thrown?

Jamie Carragher

jamie, gotta disagree, there must be red cards for all of those tackles, he was never ever ever going for the ball...

finchbee, i think everyone agrees, but the clubs just don't care at the mo...

"it's all fun and games til someone loses an eye..."

love the piccy of the bloke in the sun who claims he was hit by carragher's coin (how inevitable was that?
rolleyes.gif
), you can't even see him in the crowd shot

Jamie Carragher

I saw an interesting suggestion for how to handle coin throwing - the team whose fans chuck the coins get to play their next home fixture away from home. It would hit them both financially and probably in terms of league points and the chances are anybody throwing coins would be very unpopular with everybody which doesn't appear to be the case now. For cup games I'd suggest making the perpetrators start a stage earlier than usual (Arsenal in the 1st round & Cardiff can start with the Conference sides for their little bit of "fun" in the last round).

Jamie Carragher

I think the whole problem of coin throwing is a very difficult problem to tackle. You could punish the club by making them play their next game away from home. The problem, is we could have a situation where an away fan could be located in the home end be dressed up as a home fan, chuck a load of coins onto the pitch and get the home team unfairly punished. I don't think you can punish a team by actions of one or two idiots. Really unsure of the best solution to cope with such a problem.

Jamie Carragher

If there was a mandatory fixed penalty, I'm sure other fans would want to see the coin throwers arrested, charged and banned from the ground. Maybe if an arrest is made at the time a reduced penalty could be imposed, thus giving fans the incentive of pointing out any idiots lurking among them.

The chances are the guy who chucked the coin at Carragher has been bragging about it to his mates over a beer, maybe he wouldn't be so keen on bragging that he was the guy who got them a chance to play Macclesfield away in the first round of the cup on a wet November afternoon.

Jamie Carragher

Agree that Carragher's behaviour was absolutely disgraceful, and CANNOT be excused simply as a moment of madness. He deserves a big punishment, even if he ends up missing the world cup squad because of it, it is his own fault.

I agree with Jam Jar that you really can't punish clubs for the actions of individual fans. It is down to the stewards, police, cameras and other fans to spot the scum and get them removed and banned for life.

Jamie Carragher

can't believe he's been let off - bet if he played for derby or someone else thank the big 5 he would've had severe sh*t...

I don't know that this is true. I cannot help thinking that he made a big error but I believe that the bigger issue is with the fans not the player

Jamie Carragher

rubbish!! just cos there's a general issue of coin-throwing, does not give a sportsman the right to attack the crowd in that fashion - the coin could have hit anyone, blinded a child or anything... he should have been punished (double-standards = cantona?)

Bit of a difference, coin into general crowd or kung fu kicking a specific person !

exactly!! at least (??

) cantona knew who he was getting - carragher could have injured anyone

personally i don't think there is much of a difference, attacking the crowd is attacking the crowd - can't believe that Luton **** ever got away with it
