Jay joined the Bees from non-league Crawley Town in July 2000 for a fee which could rise to £75,000.

He started his career with Plymouth Argyle in 1997, before moving onto Saltdean United of the Sussex County League. He joined Crawley Town last season and appeared for the Dr Martens side against Brentford in the Bees' 2-1 victory in July 2000.

Jay is a quick full back with two good feet

You see thats my problem ,one good foot but the other ones really naughty.As soon as I start walking after a few beers ,naughty foot tries to go in a different direction

Lovett came on in the second half at Crawley and played left midfield. The Crawley fans near me reckoned he was their best player, so let's hope Ron has found another gem.

Buying players is great fun...we have spent almost £450,000 so far on six players (and three of them were freebies!)

You have to admit that since Ron has had John Griffin doing the big scoutie thing the Bees have unearthed some absolute gems from the lower leagues - Mahon and Rowlands being the cream that immediatley rise to the top of the mind milk, with Powell soon to jump out of the semi-skimmed. I look forward to seeing how some of these new boys are going to perform and I think Ron is working well in getting this raw talent that can only be good business in the future.

There's details on Jay Lovett on this page. From the Crawley pages it looks like he was voted their player of the year last year (getting 45% of a massive 59 votes!).

Jay lovett was not the one with dreadlocks he was tall left midfielder, crawley fans reckon he is brilliant but was a bit quite versus us.

I have mentioned this guy 4-5 times on here since last week calling him, their left midfielder, jay something.
I do believe he is right footed though as he kept cutting in, but i still thought he was excellent.Another brilliant midfield find I am sure, still just the forwards though isn't it, but they are so expensive.

OK. This is the match report from the Crawley Town website, from their thrashing of Crystal Palace on Saturday. It is of interest to us because two of the Crawley side have since joined Brentford. It appears that Jay Lovett played right back, possibly wing-back.

Crawley Town 5-1 Crystal Palace
On Saturday, for the first time in 45 years Crawley beat Crystal Palace. The last and only other time the Reds had beaten Palace was back in August 1955. Admittedly the visitors started the brighter and ran the game for the opening 20 minutes. Wayne Carlisle found himself in plenty of space down their right flank, but unfortunately for Palace no-one could get on the end of his crosses to grab an opener. Crawley took the lead on 24 minutes when Mark Hynes lifted the ball over Fraser Digby, after seeing of the challenged of the Eagles' defense. Moments earlier the visitors could have taken the lead themselves but for a fine save from Paul Smith. A fine move by Crawley lead to their second. Jay Lovett sent in a blistering cross from the right which landed nicely for Dave Powell. Powell laid the ball off to Dean Wordsworth, who sent a netbusting effort sailing past Digby. With the Reds on a roll it was 3-0 before the interval. Wordsworth send a long ball over Palace defense. Hynes met the ball as it passed Dave Woozley and lobbed a stranded Digby, much the same as his first strike. Palace got one back on the hour as Dean Austin rose above the Crawley back line and headed home Steve Thompson's corner. The Reds continued with their attacking and a fourth was not to far away. Wordsworth sent in a teasing ball, only for Digby to beat Hynes to it, sending the ball clear. Unluckily for Digby the ball went straight to Matt Woolf who fired home with a first time shot. The final goal of the game came with 5 minutes remaining when Lionel Best headed home a corner from Jay Lovett. Whilst this game may have only been a friendly it will be one of those matches that Crawley fans will remember and talk about in years to come.

Agreed.But the Crawley side looks weak to me.I know most of that team and I am amazed at the scoreline!

No, Ron was definitely not there. He was at Griffin Park, in charge of the Bees side that lost to QPHaha. However, John Griffin may have been at Broadlands.

Jay looked a bit nervous today and made a few errors.

He is only a young lad so he has time to get better and stronger as a player.

He looks quick and likes to get forward.

Be patient Bees fans, he is a good player!

totally agree simon.i think he made a couple of errors early on and then tried too hard and seemed to get caught in a corner unsure of where to go and ended up making silly errors.If you consider he was a non league player on friday used to training twice a week and then suddenly he is playing in front of a crowd against a host of premiership players.No wonder he was a bit fazed by it all.I think he will become a legend by the end of the season, I don't know why I feel so strongly about this but I do.

Quite a baptism of fire for the lad on Saturday, he seemed very isolated at times.
Does anyone know if he played at full back on a regular basis for Crawley, or may his most comfortable position be right midfield?

I think he usually played as a full/wing-back for them. But he played left-midfield against us, which suggests quite a bit of versatility.

I thought he looked a bit out of his depth at times against Boa Morte - but to give the lad a break, Boa Morte has been a Premiership player until now - so I think we should give him another chance. Lovett never gave up and I think he showed signs of having what it takes. This may be important if either (a) Boxall struggles to get back or (b) someone makes us a big offer for Danny.

Jay was one of the only positive things last night,the first time Ive seen him.Obviously this was more his level,but he showed good skilled and could kick with either foot.One for the future as we keep saying.Ron if your on the internet in Spain,PLEASE get a striker who'll do the business for one to two seasons.You dont have to make a profit on every player and I think you are being shortsighted in your total business plan involving buying young uns.A bit of striking experience to get us out of this league,bigger crowds ,more dosh,then you can dump some of the one to two season pros who have helped get us promoted.By then the young uns have nutured enough to be ready.I guess you'll sell them then for a decent offer,we'll get relegated and the whole process starts again...untill your bored.

Yeah, I agree. I was worried when I saw him vs Fulham as he looked like I would've done playing in the game! However, against Woking, and in what seemed like a position further forward, he showed some good touches and looked one of the better players in a poor game!
