Gonna be a good captain. Old head on young shoulders, single-minded, and real team player. Has just played a really mature match-winning one day innings against West Indies. At no stage did he allow himself the self indulgence of trying to get himself a century. Totally focused on the team goal. Also think he will be more imaginative and agressive than Alastair Cook... and strong enough to maintain his own form. Finally, I think he will be a right stubborn and irritating opponent.

Agree with all that. Best England batsman in my life time and I detect a shrewd ruthlessness that will make him a very good captain.

I drove that very road last September but, on balance, thought it prudent not to try and describe Joe Root's little whimsy to the locals. Conversations about cricket in the US can end up seeming fruitless.

Great achievement but he’s had plenty of tests to play in compared to other eras. Literally, what are we doing playing Pakistan in October.

15 fewer tests than Alastair Cook who he's overtaken. 29 more matches than Graham Gooch in 3rd place who would have had to score 123 runs per test match to match him. Has the highest average of any England player in the modern era. If he scores another 800 or so runs he'll overtake both Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis in over a dozen fewer tests. I understand your point but the numbers stack up against anyone.

Agreed but if the others in the 20th century had the choice of games Joe had he’d still be waiting for top spot. Fantastic achievement none the less.

Just got his 35th Test Match Hundred, and his first in Pakistan.

The guy is a run machine and he makes it look so damn easy!
Difficult to argue that he isn't England's greatest test batsman, you can only play against the opposition in front of you and he has done that for years all over the world (Australia excepted perhaps).
Also he has had to dig England out of so many holes over the years due to a lack of consistent openers so he is a true team player as well as a great bat. Chuck in being Captain on top of everything else and he is a legend in my eyes at least.

Imagine how many more runs he could have if he was coming in after Cook, Strauss, Bell and then batting with a middle order of KP, Trott etc rather than coming in as 18-2 as he pretty much did between 2017-21

Root is incredible because he is so technically correct, his drives are things of beauty but he can also mix it up with ramps, scoops, reverse sweeps in a Test match, he plays them all...amazing hand eye coordination

Well yes, but he didn’t have to face Lillee and Thompson, or Wasim Akram and Shoaib Aktar, or Marshall, Holding, Garner and so on. And he’s had a million test matches and only really performed against Ireland, Italy and the Cayman Islands. And the boundaries are 50 yards shorter than they were in 1930. And his bat is oversize and overweight. Have I missed anything @rebus ? ??

Of course he’s in your 1st XI. ?

They said earlier he scores about 83 runs per test match so if that continues, he'll need to play another 40 tests. England play at least 10 tests per year so that's him playing until he's 37 which is possible. Incidentally, if he did carry on his rate and pass Sachin, he will likely have got there in about 10 fewer tests and will be two years younger.

He sometimes has a bit of stubble which makes him look like a 16 year old who's grown a weedy moustache to look grown up.

Joe needs a test century against Bangladesh and a one day against Australia to complete Centuries against the 8 test playing nations and their one day sides.
Another 2 centuries in either formant draws him level with Brian Lara on 53 international tons.

Only thing missing off his CV is an Ashes series win in Australia with a hundred to go with. Hopefully he can get both next year.

Yep Brook is a special talent in all formats and Roots successor as best English batsman when he retires.

I think Root has 3 years at the top so will be interesting to see if he can pass Sachin on the test runs list - will be close.

Next years Ashes are important as he needs to make big runs or face question marks about not scoring in Australia which will be used as a stick to beat him with when judging all time test batsmen list.

In 2021 Root had 17 centuries, he now has 35. Not sure 51 is that far away on current form.

Atherton said today no English player will go past Root's test runs and it's hard to disagree. As good as Brook is he's about 11,000 runs behind him, can't see him overtaking him.
