In todays daily star (so it must be true),it says Steve Coppell aims to sign Reading defender John Mackie on a free transfer.
Don't know where this came from as its not on teamlies.

Just been looking at teamlies and it's under Readings news but not under Brentford! Does anyone know anything about this bloke? Is he any good? Why do we need another defender unless one of ours is on their way? Typical rumors me thinks!

Info is also in the Express (sister paper of the Star) complete with pic of Steve C. My feeling is that, if true, it would be as a replacement for Powelly.

Mackie is a big centre half, we signed him from Sutton United about 2 years ago, and loaned him straight out to them. Played a few games last season, and looked OK until Millwall at home in January (lost 4-3) when he had a shocker. Not seen at the Mad Stad since, I think he may have been loaned back to Sutton.

I hope he has got his confidence back from Millwall mauling, because he did look quite promising, but I'd be surprised if he becomes a first choice for Brentford

Saw him play for Crawley - authoratative, big. Pretty good at Southern Premier League level you could imagine someone trying to pair him with Ingimarsson. Would be the Bates to Ivar's Ashby. If you know what I mean.

He's a good player good with the ball at his feet and could do a job getting the tackles in.

If you sign him though i would see it as a step backwards as he is just about good eough for this Divison but would look dreadful in divsion one.
