John Ratcliffe RIP

I take an obscure magazine for Chartered Surveyors and the latests edition contained an obituary for John Ratcliffe, a well known surveyor who has lost a battle with cancer at the age of 54 on 4th March. The obit states that he was a season ticket holder at BFC and although I didn't know him I felt that it should be recorded as he was one of us.

John Ratcliffe RIP

I knew John as did many of the lads on here that were members of Brentham CC where we all played.

He was once famously sent off the field whilst fielding like a demon in the covers by our eccentric captain after he had asked John to move position!!! It was a League game v Ealing CC and they just stood open mouthed at the proceedings!!!!

He opened the batting soon after this titanic game and his rather gnarled opening partner said that John had said six stupid things by the time that they had reached the wicket together!!

I used to see John from time to time at GP as well as away grounds and was only looking at his business card this morning for a reference. Spooky.

I was unaware of his illness and passing.

John RIP, thanks for the memories.

John RIP, thanks for the memories.

Being a couple of years younger, I was scoring for that game. Just remember him walking off, sitting in a deck chair for a while then getting his kit and walking past me in the scorebox and out the gate.

Fantastic fielder and a decent opening bat - lightning between the stumps as those of us who had 'enjoyed tea' more than we should found out to our costs as he looked to turn every single into two!

Part of a very strong cricketing tradition from Drayton Manor school.

Likeable and misunderstood in equal measures.

Seems like too many of our contemporaries at Brentham have passed way too young - as you say Mark many of them Bees as well.
