John Terry

Just been listening to Sam Matterface and 'Goughie' on Talksport and what a wonderful thing it will be for the 'EFL' to be graced by John Terry this season - having such a skillful player amongst the lower league cloggers.

Not only that but, 'Isn't it wonderful that an A List player is giving something back' by going down to the Championship. It is a pretty impressive gesture for him to be playing for free like that. :fishing:
All of a sudden they become interested of football outside premier league. Nothing to do with the fact they are now commentating on many games in the coming season?

John Terry

Will make no impact football-wise, as he simply won't have the quality around him anymore. Probably still good at bending the ref's ear though.

He's got away with a lack of pace as he's been surrounded by World class players.
I think we're as well off with the defenders we have apart from his ability to influence weak, star struck refs.

Smacks of proper football men knowing proper footballers properly. Especially when another proper football man wanted to do the deal too. Properly. The proper football journalists love it as they can talk proper nonsense about it for days. Proper rubbish all round.

John Terry

I'm surprised that Villa didn't go for a quality mid player to enhance their promotion push rather than wasting money on a leggy old pro.

John Terry

Am I surprised by all of this, err no. In fact I would have been disappointed with Mr Bruce if he had not secured the services of one or 2 old pro's. Great I love it, cannot wait for September 9. You're just tinpot Brentford....

John Terry

I know it would take him to be hopelessly out of position bu can you imagine what the outcome would be if he ended up in a foot race with Sergi or one on one with Jota.:)

Yep. I keep thinking of just that, or FloJo, and end up smiling to myself.

John Terry

He should have retired on a relative high with his status as a very successful one club man his abiding legacy. He is 37 this year and whilst he may lead Villa back to the promised land he may also face ignominy if he struggles in the competitive and unforgiving environment that the Championship delivers.

John Terry

He could be so out of touch that he gets subbed in the 26th minute, & we'll provide the Guard of Honour....

I can just imagine it now...

24-25th minute of the first half....
Brentford fans start singing towards JT "you're getting subbed in a minute, subbed in a minute....."

He will need a pacey centre back alongside him to recover or he will drop back deeper to compensate. I imagine one of the reasons he was dropped by Chelsea last season was his pace and consequently dropping back deeper. He will get found out by a lot of strikers this coming season. As mentioned in the last few posts, we have FloJo, Sergi, Jota and even Lasse that could probably out run him, some even giving him a head start. As we don't play high long balls he will have to use his feet and that is where I think he will struggle. He has always been good with his head.

Think we should do that anyway

John Terry

Have read all the negative comments and certainly would agree regarding his lack of pace, however he does read the game very well and is, without doubt, a leader on the field. If Villa can get some pacey defenders to play along side him I think he will do ok.

It is clear that with others Villa are prepared to splash some cash in an effort to achieve promotion and I reckon will be there or thereabouts come season end.

I prefer the way we approach our business however if clubs have deep pockets then they can spend it and this particular deal is not the worst in the world.

John Terry

Oh dear Villa.....terry is well past it and his short comings will be very evident in the championship.....jobs for the boys springs to mind.

Surprised * at the posts on here , i think thats a great signing . Excellent defender , you dont play so many times for Chelsea and England if you are " average "

* i am not

An iconic leader that the team can coalesce around... not a bad asset if you're aiming for promotion. [Sign that new contract, Harlee.]

I remember Ron Harris pitching up at Brentford at the age of 36 -- it's not what you've achieved in the past that is important, but what you can do now. Terry's leadership qualities are undoubted, but can they compensate for the loss of pace and, probably, increased risk of injury?

John Terry

Harris was a fat trollop though , Terry never had pace , but 2 footed , reads the game brilliantly and injuries will indeed be the only risk i can see.

So that's 2 of us that reckon it's not a bad move for Villa

I think it was more Harris's influence on the team at the time rather than his actual play. We became a lot harder to beat, and started to win away from home which hadn't been a prominent Brentford feature before. The early period of the Callaghan/Harris era promised a great deal. Never happened of course. If Terry can pass on half his knowledge and tactical awareness Villa will be much-improved.

John Terry

One thing nobody seems to have touched upon is injuries. At his age footballers become more susceptible to injuries especially at this level. Wasn't that partly the issue with his lack of game time last season at Chelsea ?

Agreed.
And there is a considerable drop in quality between Premiership and Championship, even if we don't like to admit it.

I would have loved to have seen 'Arry's face when he heard Terry had decided to join Villa and not Birmingham.

That's true but he's past his sell by date now and as we all know, you don't get quicker as you age and he never had a third gear never mind a fourth. IMO he was another who was massively over hyped and was shown up as a cart with a wheel missing when Germany took us apart.

John Terry

Will definatley add experience to their squad and make them more orgnaised. Personally think people are calling it a bad signing because they don't like.

Personally I think he is a ****. But he will be solid in this division and has handled players at the top level without any pace. Therefore dont expect that many mistakes. Will probably get about 7 or 8 goals from set pieces as well.

However, given hes on a reported 100,000 p/w and with a huge signing on fee. This will only be considered a good signing if he helps get them promoted as if he doesnt. Regardless of his own performance they will have spent millions to gain nothing in return.

Hype got him 700 games for Chelsea and the respect of every pro player ?

Every defender ever in the game has on occasion been " taken apart "

All about opinions isn't it? For me he was fortunate to play in excellent teams which always takes the pressure off a defender. Solid pro but that's it. When exposed to class and pace as when Germany took us apart, he showed what he is. I'd agree that every player can have a tough time but quality players don't get taken apart IMO.

Probably England's best defender of the last ten years......and would have played longer if it wasn't for off the field stuff.
Leader on the field. Leader off it (ignoring the personal indiscretions).
Only questions are whether a) he'll keep up the intensity on the field and on the training ground b) how much he's in decline due to age and will keep up

John Terry

There's no doubting his credentials and medals etc I just personally feel he's past it....all players have their day and if he wanted to carry on playing he'd have been better off in China or somewhere like that

John Terry

Very good defender in his day and to play at the level that he has played at over a very long time and with the quality of players he has played with and against - for anyone to doubt his quality on the pitch is laughable.

Will be interesting to see how he goes this season though. Lots of games in the Championship and lots of physical teams.

The whole England team got taken apart that day.....

The chance to play behind Scott Hogan probably made him decide to go to Villa. ;)

You are probably right. But IMO we haven't been blessed with quality in that area. How many England defenders in the last 10 years would get into a world eleven or make that a world fifteen? IMO none.

Ashley Cole and Ferdinand IMO would get in a world 15 at some point in the last 10 years.

For me we've had some class defenders.................... Its been our under performing midfield that has let us down.

IMO Ferdinand was a ball watcher. Nice with the ball at his feet but not a great defender. Ashley Cole maybe. But one player is a very poor return. There is a reason why we consistently get the early plane back.

John Terry

Thereby illustrating my point. Massively overrated bunch.

You are saying that John Terry was overhyped because of the Germany World Cup?

On that basis, is someone like Marcelo overrated because of the Brazil v Germany WC game?

I think we were all shown up and IMO Terry was simply over hyped like the rest. Also based on my observations of him. Solid but not outstanding and well protected by excellent mid players at Chelsea. He also has no pace . I know that doesn't stop you being very effective but he's no Bobby Moore.
It's all about opinions but there's a reason why our supposed great squads always return home on the early bus. We are chock full of average players who are exposed when they come up against the very best.
All about opinions of course.

If he had more pace he would be one of the best in the world ever.
He's already ranked amongst the greats by the majority of his peers (though gets less plaudits these days due to the off the field stuff which makes him a less acceptable person to compliment publicly).
There are reasons England have underperformed..........he is simply not one of them. We'd have done much worse without him.

You dont play over 700 games in exceptional teams if your not up to it. Numerous managers all picked him as their captain. If he wasnt good enough one of them would have got rid of him.

Fine. You think he's great. I don't. That's the joy of football.
