now, if you're in a bad mood cos of the barnsley defeat i daresay my suggestion may cheer you up, or the inevitable slagging will follow which is fair enough, everyone is entitled to an opinion, and this is mine.
having seen macammon run like a b*stard, put 100% effort in at most games, hold the ball up well, dribble well, be tall and scary and believe it or not i think he is quite creative, albeit as a striker he doesnt quite come through (although well done for today) i was thinking with these attributes could it be possible that he may fit into a central midfield position? seriously think about. fullerton is the experience in the middle and can play well but needs someone with a bit of guile to play off to really shine. hutchinson just defends as a midfielder, doesnt contribute going forward, and when he headers it, it just goes anywhere. and with a lack of people to hold the ball up and pass to wings and so on i think macammons abilities may be suited to this role

disclaimer: before the inevitable slagging this is just my opinion on a possible solution to a problem. if anything i think it displays lateral thinking, others may think i'm just mad . anyway discuss...

Rudolph feels Simon is right. Macammom is not and never will be a striker, and Rudolph has felt that he should be tried in midfield. His persistance when he's been back there is his only real attribute so why not?

Rudolph knows your reasons are different to his Simon but good call.

First of all I think they are all crap and we are lucky we started so well otherwise we would be relegated this year, I think we wil come 14th-18th. I would be amazed if we got into the top ten.

I think we should get rid of everyone apart from Smith, Dobbo and Rowlands, sell GP for £20m, move to Selhurst Park, and spend the money on players and their wages and get into the Premiership.....................................

However, I reckon O'Connor might do a good job for us there, he works so hard and has pretty good technique and can pass the ball, he's just a little slow and predictable to be a winger. Maybe we should give Willo a game on the right and move Kev inside to replace Hutch?

why not try michael dobson upfront?

dobbo has aerial prowess, good awareness, mobility and he's fearless

i can't believe that dobson and vine together upfront wouln't compliment one another and give second division defences plenty to think about

i seem to remember he was a goalscoring centre-forward at junior level
and if mark peters isn't going to come through it could be an option worth looking at

How about Mark Williams upfront?
He would make a very tricky striker with interesting movement, while he has some pace and good ability on the ball to take on defenders. I remember two years ago when he scored an equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Luton at GP. I know though that if it were Vine and Williams upfront, they would lack height. This could be good as it would encourage our midfield to pass rather then hoof the ball.

Still think though that Dobson should play in the centre with Fullerton, and Matt Somner at right back. Dobson can get drawn too much into the centre of the field when at right back and then has to catch up alot of ground, While Somner holds his position well. Dobson could easily command the centre of the field, while protecting the defenders and distributing the ball well out wide. Also, he would have better chance of being a captain vocally.

Haven't really seen Evans play enough to know whether he should replace Hunt. Just know that Hunt can spark something, and is one of the only players who can actuallly outpace an opponent, and then cut inside into the penalty box.
Could Evans actually fill the centre of midfield berth? And can he hold his own and offer something more. I'd be willing to see Dobson and Evans/Fullarton. The time now is that Rowlands will have to play in the centre, or at worst give him a roaming role so that he can get as involved as possible.

As I see it the team should be:

Smith,
Somner, Sonko, Roget, Anderson,
O'Connor, Dobson, Fullarton, Hunt/Evans,
Vine, Williams.

Then Rowlands can slot in where Fullarton is, when he returns from injury.

I'd like to see Peters given a run in the first team when he comes back. He scores for the reserves, while seems like he can do something special in a match. Someone who scores so prolifically for Southampton's reserves really deserves a chance. He already sounds like the clubs' best finisher, with the best record.

By the way, where is Tabb, Peters and when does Rowlands come back?

They are crap. Our present form is relegation form, however positive we try to look at it.

In the past 7 days;

We have allowed a team who were second bottom, and only scored twice in 6 matches thump us 5-1.

We were thumped at home by Middlesbro's (albeit talented) reserve team, when we should have run them far more close.

Today's result, which I am still too angry to write about is worst of all.

We were previously relegated with 50 points, but on a normal season, 50 points should be enough for safety. We need another 32 - pray we get them.

Oh I nearly forgot... McCammon!

To be honest, he is probably our best player at the moment, Vine aside (which doesn't say a lot for Macca ), however his goal return is still short of what is expected of a striker.

Simon Porter has said something I have been considering for a while - McCammon does have the qualities of a good attacking midfielder. Only one problem, who replaces him up front? Kevin O'Connor is supposed to be one of the best natural strikers at the club, but Walley obviously doesn't think so or he wouldn't play him in the middle. Mark Peters seems to have some personal issues. I can't think of any other reason why a player who was once thumping in goals for Southampton's reserves is unable to get anywhere near our first team.

The overall situation up front is most likely Leon Constantine. He has scored goals in Division Three. Remember the last time we gambled on a couple of prolific Division Three forwards? We ended up with the FT partnership! Constantine and Vine - their goals will look good on Walley's CV!

Mark is (and I would love to have to eat my words) never going to be a 20-goal-a-season striker. However, two things he does well are to hold up play and shield the ball while waiting for support. With some work on timing etc. his physical presence could make an impact in midfield where we are sorrowful at the moment. This would at least give Leon a chance of regular starts.

We're only a quarter of the way through the season, we've had some thumpings and, if we are realistic, mid-table obscurity with such a young squad is a target (yes, I know it's a crap division this year, but could you HONESTLY see this squad performing at a higher level if we got promoted).

I think it's time to Wally experiment with moving players into 'new territory' over the next few matches. It may not work, we may get thumped again, but we can't go on as we are, and it could, at least, be entertaining..

Mark is (and I would love to have to eat my words) never going to be a 20-goal-a-season striker.

He has scored 3 at this quarter-season stage, following a slow start not helped by lack of confidence. At the current rate he could reach 12, or as high as 15. But then he is at the peak of his form at the moment!

Have to say that Macca is one of our more creative players. Yesterday, he played better than Vine but was substituted. It might be interesting to substitute Vine if he's not playing too well and see how Macca links up with Constantine.

last season i was part of the macammon 'fan club'. this was because i didnt see any point in ruthlessly slagging off one of our own players so close to the end of the season for what i believe to be obvious reasons. other people say he's rubbish and stick to their viewpoint which is fair enough but the whole point of the debate was to encourage objective debate. there will be some in the pro camp as their will be in the con camp but objectively this is what i seen from the games i've watched this season.
macammon to me plays with his heart on his sleeve, he puts in 100% (sometimes with the crowds help) into what he does. technically he's not perfect nor a natural poacher. what skills he does possess are these: he's strong, and can win the ball either on the ground or in the air, his distribution is o.k. not always brilliant but it is how he passes it that impresses me. he is one of our only players that knock the ball sideways rather then up/down. he can dribble sometimes creating chances for others, he holds the ball up allowing for others to join the game and sometimes can make useful movement. he's pacy and strong and i believe in the centre of midfield with the pitch around him, if he learns to look up a little more he will be able to create. however in order for this to work he will have to develop a slightly more defensive attitude (obviously) and work on his tackling. but these are my reason for why i started the topic.

As a team: Smith, Hunt, Roget, Sonko, Dobson, Evans, Fullarton (c), Hutch, McCammon in behind OConnor, Vine.

So a 4-3-1-2 formation. I think Dobbo is only captain until Rowlands is back anyway, and I only say Fullarton purely on position, and we cant sacrifice Dobson anywhere else because hes a very good right back. Eddie would be replaced by Rowlands who would become captain. Playing McCammon in behind would give him the forward role and the creative midfield and let Eddie play deep like he seems to do anyway. Alsowe would have a tall midfield then and have hopefully aerial superiority. I give up on Ijah he doesnt want to play for us anymore and hes still transfer-listed and hasnt been doing well these past few games. Dont know about Hunt as a left back though because he is naturally attacking but then again he will get stuck in and is fast. I think Evans and fullarton/rowlands are more than capable of knowing when to play wide and when to contract.
