Kicking for touch

Out of interest have we ever taken a KO and put it deep into the oppo's half for a throw-in?

Can't remember us doing it but the Metro has a piece on us and refers to us as a practitioner of this tactic...can only remember Rice doing it for Arsenal and PSG before them.

If it's not factually correct it won't be the only error in the piece as they reckon we've beaten Man U and Chelsea in recent weeks...which was news to me.

We used to do it a fair bit when we signed Andy Scott. But usually accidentally because the intention was clearly to kick it out for a goal kick so we could moan at Scott for giving up the chase too early.

Nelson did it. A lot. Mainly because he couldn’t keep it on the pitch…

We’ve done it this season.

Used it in the Holder era with Marcus Gayle down the left-wing.
Can’t remember whether it was to win a throw or for ‘field position’ though.

I felt like we used to do it as a deliberate tactic at one point in the late 90s / early 00s, I hadn't noticed it recently though to be honest.

I remember it clearly as I remember thinking at the time. “”That’s an odd one for us”.
It was only once mind, and may have been an over hit pass to the wing!
We did it against Florist and they did exactly the same a minute or two later. There was a piece in my paper soon after saying it was a tactic taken from the rugby playbook.
Get the ball close to the opposition goal and pressure their throw in, in the hope you gain possession.

A few up-and-unders last night. Was there one directly from our kickoff? Getting it straight into the mixer while allowing our players to get forward.

I love it.
Far more exciting/entertaining than 5 minutes of tippy-tappy between the back 4 & keeper.
The fabulous thing is that when we get it up top we have the quality to get the ball under control and pass it around with pace and accuracy. It’s a beautiful game 🥰

Graham Taylor used this tactic a lot, including for England. It makes sense nowadays as pressing techniques are far more refined.
