LEFT BACK - Matt Somner!!!!

I hope after todays shambles the debate over who plays at left back is over. Lee Fieldwick, the poor lad, was like a headless chicken after 10 minutes, and by the end of the game wouldnt have been picked for a park team. Julian was also under the cosh from the off but, in fairness made some great saves to keep the score down and got his act together although, the debate on who cocked up forthe 3rd goal was still going on in the pub after the match - most thought Lee lost sight of the ball in flight so the keeper charged out..aaarrrggghhhhh.

The worst thing as far as I'm concerned is that If the fans can see the problem within 15 mins why can't our sh*te manager & coach? We had Evans on the bench who's a senior pro but what does the prat do? send young tabb up front against 6 footers.he hardly got a touch..has Wally really gone mad?

Sad to say, though, our 'seniors' let us down big time, what the f*** was Hunt doing to give them the 2nd goal? and oh yeah cheers Roget, you ar*e , another needless 3 match suspension coming-up!

Put Smith in at left back.His job will be to defend.You have Evans and Hunt doing the business up the left flank.

Fieldwick has a good left foot and is stand in cover for Hunt.Lee is not a fullback.Martin Grainger is a full back.Just a comparison by the way.

There's no doubt Fieldwick can give better balance to the side than Somner given he is naturaly left footed, but first and foremost a defender has to defend and Somner is clearly much better at it, at the moment at least.

It might pain some to say but we might not have lost had he been playing yesterday.

If Frampton is still unfit ( and he does he seem to be injured a lot) then I think we can start to understand why Wally has persisted with Somner in that position.

And although it's off topic, yesterday was also proof that Mark Peters is not worth a place in the starting line up - at least while there are enough fit players who care.

I think that the problem is until 2 seasons ago we wouldn't have heard of Fieldwick until he was prepared to play first team football after a while in the reserves. Nowadays our players have no chance to develop, they go in at the deep end. It's ****ed up basically. He's not ready yet and neither are most of the team.

Sorry Edmundo. While I agree that Fieldwick had a very bad day at the office yesterday, how come he only gets one chance, while Somner continually gets exposed at left back yet gets chance after chance. Fieldwick deserves another go, based on what we have seen previously.

At least left back is Fieldwick's position. It certainly isn't Matt Somners. We will be needing Somner in his rightful Centre Back space anyway when Roget is banned . (unless you have any other ideas for Centre Half).

Fieldwick didn't have a great game yesterday but he wasn't alone, and can hardly be blamed for a goalkeeping display of Paul McCulloughesque ineptitude.

To be honest while I think Fieldwick is a prospect, Frampton is the obvious LB choice and if he is injured ( as always) maybe Steve Evans can do a job there. He played as a left wing back for Palace. But then our coaches aren't that adept at spotting wing back prospects are they (Rowly !!!).

Whoever plays LB it certainly shouldn't be a right footed Centre Back.

As for Peters, he was disappointing yesterday but no more so than many. I think the timing of his first start in a while is a bit bizarre. Couldn't get a kick on the back of several pre season goals but as soon as he has a stinker in the reserves in midweek he is promoted to the starting line up. Doesn't really compute with me I'm afraid. He won't get any service anyway with the deadly duo of Smith and Hutch "bossing" the midfield. As if.

To be honest I've got bored with the Peters debate. He obviously doesnt figure in Downes plans and various spurious allegations on here about him have probably turned a few of his supporters against him. I'm not sure he deserves that but then who knows.

What I do know is that Downes deserves every bit of the stick he gets on here and will relegate us with less than 30 points if allowed to stay.

Fieldwick had a nightmare yesterday and remember he is 21 not 17. Did anyone see Evans (their one) yesterday running like a madman on drop kicks to get one on one with Fieldwick seeing he was there for the taking. I don't blame Fieldwick for this - I blame Downes. The bloke (Fieldwick) had clearly had a torrid time and was left on his own against a big striker with Premier League experience. Downes does not appear very quick on the uptake to me.

Only one position for Somner to play and that is beside Sonko in the centre.

Can't agree that Somner should go back to left back, yes Fieldwick had a torrid time, but he gave us attacking options down the left, which Somner never will. As someone else pointed out compared to Somner at Wycombe Fieldwick had a blinder!

Could be that Frampton would be a better bet when he's fit, but Matt Somner will never be a good left-back, Fieldwick could be, although playing under Wally at the moment is enough to make most players pack the game in I think.

Fieldwick would be better at wing-back, as would Dobbo, as they would have more cover behind them, and would get more licence to exploit their crossing abilities without having to worry about getting caught upfield. Not going to happen though.
