Leon Constantine won't go down in history as one of the finest strikers we've ever had -- but he did leave on the cheap and has scored goals wherever he has played. Like so many before and since, he wasn't that popular with the faithful either.

Brighton, who are no mugs in the transfer market, tried to sign him this week:

"I also had a £150,000 bid accepted by Port Vale for Leon Constantine but he has decided to stay at Vale Park."

Knight (Albion chairman) added: "Constantine is 28 years old and wants to see out his contract to the end of the season and then move to a Championship club during the summer.

It seems a very long time ago since we were buying players for £100,000 +

This has been discussed time and time again on the GPG. I saw nearly every game he played for Brentford, reserves, first team etc and the plain truth was that he wasn't cutting it and deserved a free transfer.

He hardly set himself alight at Millwall beforehand. Some players take time to find their natural game and Leon has done this. Good luck to him.

Wally signed him and I think released him. It was Tilson who transformed his career intially not Rosenoir wasn't it?

For what it's worth, I thought he was sh*t and he barely got a second glance from most Bees fans when he left.

What is your point?

On current form he is one on the best strikers in the lower dvisions. In 2002-03, he was one of the worst and rightly binned.

I think it was all about timing with Constantine, if he was the player he was back then but in the current Brentford side he would have played a lot more games than he did and we probably would have seen more from him. Basically i mean he showed a lot more than Willock has ever done but yet didnt get as many chances because we had other players. (Im sure I saw him score a hat trick at Crawley where he showed he had something about him)

I think there's sense in that. It's also I believe down to the way a team plays and who the other forwards are - if their style gells, an average player can look good and score goals.

He wern't the finished article with us, but he did get over 10 in one season for us, which was pretty bloody good as he was playing in a sh*te team and learning his trade.

Seems to have become a lower league Marcus Bent, moving on far too frequently for someone with obvious talent but something lacking!

I agree!

His best spells goal scoring wise in the football league were at Southend United (43 Apps 21 Gls 2003/04 season) who he signed for from us and Port Vale (72 Apps 32 Gls 2005-2007)

Scored a fine hat-trick against us at Griffin Park when with a struggling Torquay. Plus he nearly grabbed a few more that day, and, I believe, he had at least one additional 'goal' disallowed.
One of the very few opposing players to be applauded off the pitch by Bees fans, after having helped dent our promotion chances that season.

Lots of ex-Bees seem to score against us, but it is rare for them to grab a hat-trick:(

we were abject that day but were somehow a goal up at halftime. I spoke to a Torquay director at the interval who told me that the team had driven up at 6am that morning for a lunchtime kick off and that they would be knackered and jack it in now.

We were played off the park after the break and conceded 3 and it could have been 6!

That's Crawley manager's Steve Evans former club.
You know, the one where he picked up a criminal conviction, as in:

Stumbled accross this interview on youtube earlier where Leon talks about his time at the Bees for the first 10 minutes. Probably safe to assume he's not going to list Wally Downes as one of the biggest influences on his career, and 'hints' that he wasnt necessarilly Wally's signing but someone else at the clubs.
