Sorry. Can’t see Ron’s going the same way as others do.
Take off the rose-tinted glasses for a moment and look at the facts as I see them. (I don’t guarantee they’re all spot on – like I said, they’re as I see them.)
FACT. We’re a small club with attendances around the 5,000 mark.
FACT. On the outskirts of London as we are, we not only have to compete with London clubs, we have to compete with other Thames Valley clubs such as Reading for our attendances.
FACT. For the same geographical reason, we have higher outgoings, even before we look at bills and overdrafts: players expect and need higher salaries than, say players at Oxford or Cambridge.
FACT. We are living off the fact that 60 years ago, we were in the old First Division for a few years: we need to look at how a) we can get back up there and b) still be around in 6 years time, never mind 60 years.
FACT. Since Ron came to the Bees,, we’ve gone up to the Second Division.
FACT. We’ve reached the playoffs.
FACT. We’ve signed a large number of players who would be under serious consideration for Bees fans’ all-time teams.
FACT. We’ve paid out a record transfer fee…
FACT. … and got back a record transfer fee.
FACT. We’ve had the free admission day against Peterborough
FACT. We’ve tried to move…
FACT. … and got nowhere, so far. As far as I can make out, that’s partly because we didn’t want to go to Woking or Kingstonian, even temporarily, and Hounslow etc have presented barriers.
FACT. We became one of the first clubs to have a fan with a say in the running of the club.
FACT. We’ve followed a pretty successful youth policy – take a look at the U.19 league table.
FACT. We’ve bought smartly – and cheaply – from non-league.
FACT. Ron Noades is a business man. A successful one.
FACT. Unlike many other chairmen, he is interested (and good) enough to manage us successfully for over a year.
FACT. He (or his company) invested in our club. Now he wants to see some return on his money…
FACT. But, again unlike other charirmen, he hasn’t pulled the rug out from under our feet.
FACT. He is not good at communicating to the fans...
FACT. …but he cannot be expected to tell us everything that goes on.
FACT. Thgere have been stories galore about him; insults, banners…
FACT. But as far as I’m concerned, he’s done as good a job as anyone could do given the current climate and our previous financial condition. (Remember, 35 years ago we nearly went out of business and we’ve never been really stable financially since then.)
If that’s a bad track record, the only manager good enough for us is Mother Theresa. Oh. She’s dead – well, we’re stuffed then.
Two years ago, when the ‘Do Ron Down’ campaign started to gather impetus, I sent a letter to him thanking him for what he’d done. He called me one afternoon to thank me in return. Didn’t know me from Adam. He talked for almost three quarters of an hour, giving me some background on the arrival of Steve Coppell. Then he said he had to go – he was ringing from Spain.
Now, I call that a highly courteous gesture. For that alone, he gets my support. Any one else feel the same way – or am I just a voice crying in the wilderness?
