Long throws

Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere but I couldn’t find anything. Why is the long throw becoming increasingly common amongst teams?

I’m personally not a fan, and can’t really think of it paying off for us, I may be wrong? Mads is ok at it but he’s no Delap. I’ve noticed a lot of Championship teams are using the tactic now and wondered what people’s opinions are on it? I don’t think I’ve seen City or any of the top prem sides doing it, is it really better than a short throwing? And if so why haven’t more teams been doing if for years?

Long throws

As with any set piece it’s an opportunity to create a chance.

Certain teams have a lot of success with it, and probably don’t have the technical players to create better chances as frequently from open play. Birmingham under Bowyer, for example. Can’t say we are in that category.

Long throws

I’ve noticed we’re using MBS to do these a lot less recently. I think having the option makes opponents have to think about more different ways we might attack and be a way of beating tight marking from throws and in some cases having throws be like free kicks and corners. But if you (as we for a while did) just go long it ends up as predictable as doing short throws.

Long throws

.............far too non League and desperate................I expect it from Pulis and Warnock...............

I agree it’s better suited to some teams, and I agree that we aren’t in that category, that’s why I was surprised how often we were doing it. I remember last season we had free kicks in good positions that we often chose to take quickly and short rather than getting it into the box. Which is why I’m so surprised with the long throw but it is becoming more and more common.

Long throws

It's becoming more common as more clubs realise that whether people like it or not, it is a perfectly legitimate and valuable tactic.

If you look eg at Atletico Madrid, they far outscore other La Liga teams by clever use of set-pieces, including throw-ins, but it can be found at every level - see eg Ben Tozer's throws at Cheltenham Town this season.

It's a bit like people claiming eg that a striker's penalties don't really "count" towards his tally - try telling that to Ivan Toney! ;)

Anyhow, so long as it's effective, I personally prefer excitement over aesthetics.

Long throws

I don't like it much either, but Preston were successful with it today against our likely playoff opponents Barnsley. So maybe it does have merit.

Long throws

OK as an occasional option, but as long as it doesn't slow the game down. Too often the ball goes out when the team is on a break, and instead of a quick throw everything stops for the thrower to jog across, the defence gets set, and it moves from being a fluid to a static situation.

Often our short throws even from far into opponents half leads to 5 backwards passes to Raya. So a long throw can test their defence. Some variety in them would help

Yep.
Barnsley couldn’t cope with it at all. I imagine though that this is the case with high balls into the box in general.

Ironically may have more success with them against premier league teams who aren’t used to tactic than championship sides. However Sorensen is only player who can provide sufficent ammunition. I worry with Pinnock that he doesn’t clear first man and then we are left vulnerable defensively

Plus we'll need him in the box to make a nuisance of himself.

Long throws

You say that, but unlike even a few years ago, BFC are now a team with quite a few big, strong aggressive players - look at our back three from Friday alone.
We do have some giants at the back. Though Arsenal’s defending was so abject that diddy Bryan was only prevented from nodding into the net by Christian getting there first!

Long throws

We are playing a different game this year. Our carousel has gone and has been replaced with a mix of high press, long ball and build from the back if we can. Our player recruitment has also altered to strong physical players who cover grass and can go past players to create openings . No reason why we shouldnt use a long throw. We have four big units and the ball gets delivered right in the zone. Gives the oppo yet another thing to worry about. They will be worried about conceding a throw to us.
We can't expect to dominate the ball anymore at this level but we can hit teams on the break.
IMO it would be fatal to think we could succeed at this level any other way. Our carousel is now game management when needed.

Long throws

Why as some managers say are long throws difficult to defend against. With Sorenson's throw against Arsenal for our second goal, how much more difficult was that than compared to a corner kick?

Long throws

The goal that we scored from the throw should have been disallowed.

Long throws

Tony Pulis must have been roaring his head off that we, renowned as a footballing side, did a long throw into the box and scored from it

Long throws

Long throw-ins are a part of the game, for heaven's sake. They are within the rules. There is nothing unsporting about them, unlike the so-called professional foul which no doubt many on here would condone, in particular if it resulted in preventing an opponent from scoring. Using a player with strong arms that enable him to throw the ball directly into the box is no more counter to the spirit of the game than using a player who is able to run unusually fast and scores goals because of this distinctive ability.

I think that's the point. In the PL, chances are much harder to come by, so we want to create high-percentage scoring opportunities from dead-balls and a throw-in can be added to a corner kick or high free kick to make that happen.

Long throws

That made it sound as if we've worked on it like a rehearsed set piece as opposed to just launch it in the box!

It must be embarrassing for a an ESL candidate team to let a long throw bounce in the 6 yard box and concede a goal from it.

Ex-top ref, Keith Hackett disagrees with you, calling Leno "soft and weak."

Similar to comments from Gary Neville who said Leno should have been a lot stronger and broke away then he could have punched the ball, he just got sucked into a pointless tussle with Pontus.

It might have helped if their centre backs hadn’t let Christian and Bryan have the freedom of the six yard box too! It’s almost a shame they didn’t salt the wound by having 5’8” Mbeumo nod it in without needing to jump.

Clearly. If you rewatch, Jansson clearly goes quickly and directly to stand in front of the 'keeper and it looks like Sørensen waits for his signal (but it may be he's just waiting for him to be in position), while Nørgaard just saunters to a position on the edge of the box, only to make a late run to the far post. I'd guess, on closer examination, there's a player blocking a defender from getting to Christian.

Long throws

I think if you look closely jansson did have his arm stopping him jumping... but the keeper should have thrown his toys out oh his pram to draw attention to it. Bit weedy

Long throws

With the amount of media coverage i wonder whether Pontus will get away with that again

I'm sure our opponents' analysts will have watched the full match video and noted it already!

A bit? Get a mate to stand infront of you and "hold" you how Jansson did and realise just how weedy it is for that to stop you in your tracks

It was simply incredible to watch. It was like he just sauntered onto the dance floor and demanded a dance.

Long throws

Leno was grabbing him right back and was so busy with his wrestling match he forgot to make any attempt to get away from jansson and go for the ball

Long throws

Think Crouch said teams lost the plot and would try and stop it going out for a throw and give away a corner instead.

Long throws

No way should it have been disallowed. Their arms were interlocked, but it was as much Leno's doing as Pontus' Leno should have pushed him away and given himself space. They had 2 defenders at the near post, IIRC, but for some reason just like Bergovic he want to join. Even when he had 'freed' himself he was in no hurry to get across his goal. Christian covers 3 yards to meet the ball, Leno barely moved

Guy on 5 live Monday night football (5 live from 8pm on I player) was apparently Mads coach for throw ins - said that Mads is one of the best thrower ins in world football … great Asset to have.

Long throws

This is the first time we've scored as a result of a Mads long throw, isn't it?

I’m sure if we’ve built a platform of solid results and performances we’ll start pinging it round with the passes but I think a big thing TF learned from his terrible run of 8 losses in his first 10 games (I remember in particular going 3 down in less than half an hour at home to Swansea through suicidally weak passing around the back) is we have to earn the right to play like that. The passage of 10-15 passes around 35 mins in against Arsenal where we were giving it the “olé” at 1-0 up was an example of us asserting ourselves after earning it.

If we earn the right to play our more fluid game through the season we will be far away from the bottom three. That’s the club’s ambition and we haven’t forgotten that by starting with a much more aggressive press and containment strategy. The second goal was a great example of attack being the best form of defence for us and being as comfortable with Bryan running at them and pinging in a cross as with MBS throwing it long to have the same effect. We’ve not turned to Pulisball! We love to see it!

Long throws

The throw in coach we had previously was on Radio 5live last night. Interesting stuff.

Long throws

Presumably defences are not used to dealing with long throws when they are delivered into the penalty area from the touchline halfway in the opposition's half. It gives us a valuable weapon as a quick throw, say, down the touchline or to an unmarked player 35 yards out can always be used. Defenders have to second guess where the ball is actually going to be delivered to.

Long throws

If an opposition player, does what Pontus did to Leno, to Raya. Would you be happy? What should Raya do?
Dark Arts as far as I am concerned. You'd want your keeper to not get bullied and seeing as Pontus made a beeline for Leno you would hope that Raya would have been on his toes at least to avoid his clutches. Not much chance of man handling Pontus out the way but don't just stand there and get pinned either. Used to do a similar thing when playing Sunday League, being on the short side I would stand in front of the keeper (or follow him around) to impede his running jump. Got flattened a good fews times as well! :D

Long throws

Thrown by Ian Hutchinson who was a specialist and headed in by someone we all know well, David Webb (shudder). I remember it well. I loathed (still do) Ch*lsea but I always liked Hutch.

This game and the first one were the reason I supported Leeds (arrrggghhhh!) until my first visit to GP with Bees' supporting relatives aged 12. Most wanted the Blues to win: I thought they were too smug then and still do!
