Long throws

Long throws

We are playing a different game this year. Our carousel has gone and has been replaced with a mix of high press, long ball and build from the back if we can. Our player recruitment has also altered to strong physical players who cover grass and can go past players to create openings . No reason why we shouldnt use a long throw. We have four big units and the ball gets delivered right in the zone. Gives the oppo yet another thing to worry about. They will be worried about conceding a throw to us.
We can't expect to dominate the ball anymore at this level but we can hit teams on the break.
IMO it would be fatal to think we could succeed at this level any other way. Our carousel is now game management when needed.

I agree up to a point but think the carousel might still be cranked up a bit against the weaker, less possession-based teams.

Jake Bidwell got away with it, Maybe FrankTT can protect him
I thought there was another ex bee who got away with fouling Raya as well. Pontus just stood in front of Leno and blocked him in, did not run at or into him. ?

I haven’t watched it back but I thought Pontus put his arms behind his back and held Leno

I have now watched again and Pontus put his arms back over Leno’s shoulders

Yes Leno was pinned in. The ref. VAR and external referees did not think it was sufficient foul play for it to merit a free kick. They are now not penalising minor infringements. I think Leno could easily have got himself clear before the throw took place and his defenders should have been getting in between him and Pontus.

Rico being tripped in box against Valencia was another example of how they are tinkering to improve the flow of game after VAR last year.

Dark Arts as far as I am concerned. You'd want your keeper to not get bullied and seeing as Pontus made a beeline for Leno you would hope that Raya would have been on his toes at least to avoid his clutches. Not much chance of man handling Pontus out the way but don't just stand there and get pinned either. Used to do a similar thing when playing Sunday League, being on the short side I would stand in front of the keeper (or follow him around) to impede his running jump. Got flattened a good fews times as well! :D
Always told my son to stand in front of the GK in his matches, when he was 9/10years old, for free kicks etc.
Different now though, offside rules came in from under-11! ?

The power of the long throw-in! This from today's Guardian:

"Jack Robinson inadvertently put West Brom in front by nodding into his own goal from a long throw-in by Darnell Furlong"

Their 4th was from a long throw by Furlong too....

Long throws

Roger Cross used to hurl them in a distance in the 70's and was featured in a long throw competition on the big match. We also had someone fairly recently in L1 whose name escapes me . My Stoke bro-in-law loved it and reminding him of them scoring against Arsenal from a Rory Delap special.

David Hunt ?

Long throws

You can take the team out of League Two, but you can't take the League Two out the team...more than happy to compliment our free-flowing, progressive football with a smidge of time-tested lower league basics. In a strange way I saw Norgaard's goal as a nod and a wink to the footie we all grew up watching at GP.

Villa get a goal from one today......

Given our heavy use of this with almost no one else doing it do we think it has had an affect on the rules / pattern of the game. Whilst it is clearly legal arguably the whole process has turned into something akin to a corner where play is stopped for sometime and the players us and them all move to positions to defend in the box as apposed to along the touchline.
I actual advocate for using it as often as possible when we are leading towards the end of a game since it seems an easy way to waste time. Doubt refs remove any time for it.

Sadly, it's basically a given these days that any "dead ball" can take 30 seconds before action restarts :(

I was very impressed watching Ben Trozer's throws for Wrexham v Notts County the other day. Low trajectory and very long (sometimes to far side of 6 yard box). He almost ends up on the ground when following through. Jensen not in the same league.

Throw in close to the opposition penalty area. Everyone looks for Jensen. He trots over and collects the ball. Preferably a dry one. Looks to throw it short but never does. Everyone hangs around the near post . Jensen backs up and slings it in. I’d guess closer to a minute.

Didn't we score from a Jensen throw-in that went short recently?

We have been looked down on by both pundits and opposition fans since our arrival in the Premier League for employing long throws. I thought it was highly amusing that two teams, Inter and Arse, both employed long throws in the CL semi finals.

Long throws a plenty in the Championship play offs - commentator even mentioned they are back in fashion
