1. Dario Gradi 01/06/83
2. Alex Ferguson 06/11/86
3. Alan Curbishley 24/07/91
4. George Burley 28/12/94
5. Barry Fry 01/08/96

very surprised to see old Bazza "the complete tool" Fry in there.

didnt realise that Burley had been at Ipswich that long either

Dario Gradi (1983) - 14 years on, got Crewe to Division One (boooo!)
Alex Ferguson (1986) - 7 years on, won first Premiership with Man Utd
Alan Curbishley (1991) - Likewise, got Charlton in the Premiership after around 7 years
George Burley (1994) - Failed to keep Ipswich in the Premiership in the early days, but patience was rewarded with a return about 5 years on
Barry Fry (1996) - Has been in charge of Peterboro for around six years. Who knows where they could end up if the same patience is shown with Barry over the next two seasons, in the same was as the chairmen of the previous four named managers did.

The key here is none of these managers were successful with their clubs overnight. They eventually succeeded because they worked for chairmen and directors with a rare quality in football nowadays - patience. Now have a look at some of the clubs, who have revolving doors in their recruiting department.

& let's not forget where Crewe were when Dario took over, Division Four!!

look at the patience in Wenger - gave him time to mould the team exactly how he wanted it, and now look at them, magnificent...

these clubs who constantly rotate their managers are SOOOOO stupid (but then again, "sticking" with people like O'leary at leeds and robson at middlesbro was never gonna work with these talentless no-brained morons :))

Time is crucial for managers. Ferguson took a long time to get his team together. Houllier is getting there after the Souness era. Even the Bees have had this it took a couple of years to get the team we had last year and lets face it if the manager had funds the team would still be together and I believe they would be walking div 2 !!

Barry Fry could be top soon. What next? Gradi sacked because his directors expect Crewe to walk straight back into Division One? Alex Ferguson sacked for a slightly bad start to the season? :confused: :confused: :confused:

I can't see anyone walking into Ipswich and matching Burley's achievements. Obviously, it's not only us who have a complete f*ck*!ng pillock running our club.

Thought I would revive this thread after 10+ years. Uwe is currently the 20th longest serving manager in the four divisions according to Wikipedia (adjusting for Fergie and Moyes). I wonder how soon into the new season he'll move up to 19th (end of August?!).

Interesting to note Sweepy's final sentence above. How times change.

Thank the Lord times have changed,we are so lucky to have a man of patience in MB.

I think Sweeps was remarkably civil to Noad£s as well,my description of the man would probably have included the word ****oid.

I have already brought a special bottle of 25 year old scotch for the day he finally croakes...I should invite his butters wife to the party but she is too busy hanging upside down from a beam in a cocoon of her own wings.

My money would be on Abbott and Tisdale to depart if they don’t start off well.

Think Abbott was close to going at one point last season? And Tisdale was talk of the town a few years back with his Scarf and flat-cap – neither seems to have improved.

Tisdale is on limited resources though, and the club know it. They've had to release top scorer Jamie Cureton and they've let a couple of other important players go (though not Craig Woodman of course, he's the real heartbeat of their side!)

But the next couple of years they may struggle a decent amount and they know it! Tisdale knows the club well though and I don't think under those circumstances there are many who they could bring in who could do a better job. I think they'll stick with him as they sort of have to... But I think he still can be a good manager. Greg Abbott however I can see leaving fairly soon...

I think that FORTY ONE managers, at the time of posting, in the Football League have been in the job for more than a year. This includes the Mansfield and Newport County managers who started when they were outside the league.
