I know that Macari is loved in Stoke-on-Trent from his time managing The Potters, but this is a nice story from his time since then - a welcome antidote to the "Footballers in Trouble" thread!


But in 2016, a local news report in his adopted city of Stoke-on-Trent took the former midfielder out of his armchair and into the streets.

“Local councillors were arguing about how many homeless people there were in the area,” Macari, 71, recalled. “Some said over 100, others said it was around ten, and I wanted to find out for myself. Within minutes – without even properly looking – I had found over 30.

“It made me realise that some people were downplaying the problem, that there were a lot of people suffering, and I asked myself if there was anything I could do to help. My first thought was just the obvious: ‘Can I find a building to at least put a roof over their heads?’ And then, ‘Would it be possible to feed them too, get them some new clothes?’ I just wanted to do something.

And do something he did!

Though made by the Beeb, as you say, it was actually a feature film - my own favourite ever footie film in fact.

Macari features prominently and for anyone who hasn't seen it, you should be able to stream it (BBC iPlayer?); but if not, get the DVD above - I guarantee you'll enjoy it. In fact, even non-football fans will love it.

Meanwhile, there's a stage version in the making, though delayed by Covid.

Not on iplayer anymore, but you will find it on Amazon Prime (Free if you are a member) it's a cracking film, well worth a watch.

I have been lucky enough to meet Lou Macari and I just think he is one of the nicest people you could wish too talk too.
I went up to Old Trafford for his testimonial in 1984.
20,000 Bhoys in attendance and he played for both sides in a 1-1 draw.
Henrik is a God.
Lou is one of his disciples.
That is how highly I rate him.
