There's no doubt that, whatever they say about luck evening out over a season, the wind of good fortune has been blowing in our favour in recent games, compensating to some extent to the lack of lucky breaks we were getting earlier in the season.
The ultra-soft penalty we were awarded against QPR last night is a case in point. We were well worth the win on the basis of our first-half dominance, but the result could still have gone the other way what with - to take one example - Raya's dropping a cross late in the second half and the ball falling fortuitously to a defender. And without the 1-2 scoreline resulting from that penalty, QPR would have been under less pressure.
It's true that Bidwell's toe-poked own goal against Swansea did not affect the final result, but if it hadn't gone in and with the score only at 0-1 to the Bees at half-time rather than 0-2, who knows?
And then there was that unforgettable flght-back against Millwall, which included an equaliser fired by Mbueno that took a slight deflection on its way into the far left-hand corner. Let's face it - a millimeter more or a millimetre less deflection and the ball could have gone anywhere. To which we could add the scoring of the winner with just seconds left on the clock. This isn't to detract from the immense merits of the fight-back. But it would have taken so little for all the effort to have been in vain.
Still... A lucky streak? Who's complaining? Long may it continue. And the way they're playing, I reckon we're making our own luck.
