Mansfield Town

1976-77 Division 3 Champions

No reason.....no link to Brentford really.

but I have always had a fascination with mansfield, after sitting next to Paul Mansfield for 3 years at school.
He did not share my fascination and in fact kept getting irritated, when I asked him what the score was each Monday morning.

What a zanemeister you are. There's nothing to write home about in Mansfield. In fact, the best thing about it is the way out.

One of the coldest away days was spent in early 2003 watching a nil-nil draw.

Just as well that you didn't sit next to Paul Queens-Park-Rangers, eh? :D

Mansfield Town

A huge punch up occured in a game at GP v Mansfield with 4 red cards being shown.

We have a good record at Mansfield.

I was there for the PO second leg against Northampton 2/3 seasons ago.

That's about all I know about Mansfield.

It's up there with Hartlepool in Feb 2005 and Doncaster in Feb 2006 for temperature.

Only been to Mansfield twice and have absolutely no motivation to go back, if I miss a few next year that will be one of them.

Mansfield Town

Used to visit the British Coal Opencast offices there years ago. not a nice place. Until the Robin Hood line opened in 1995(?), it was the largest town in Europe without a railway station.

Mansfield Town

Mansfield Town have had only 1 season out of the bottom division in 17 years.

1993/4 and 2004/5 have been their only play-off years in this time.

I read some book that had this game in, can't remember too much about the name of the book something like "punch ups on a soccer pitch" :D

When Bees got promoted in 1992, it coincided with the job I had at the time which involved visiting a number of schools/youth clubs across England. A couple of projects were based in Mansfield and Rotherham - awful places and I couldn't wangle my visits to coincide with a game as we were in a different division. Mansfield is so soulless - can't imagine a weekend away in Sutton-on - Ashfield.

Mansfield Town

i watched macclesfield v mansfield this season, paul inces first game in charge of macc, final score was 2-3. and i've never to my knowledge been to mansfield - town or ground.

i hope this has been enlightening.

Mansfield Town

Went to Mansfield on the 22nd December 1962. We won !-2 aand they had a profolic goalscorer named Ken Wagstaff. We had Johnny Brooks, Billy McAdams and John Dick.

Mansfield Town

I saw Mansfield draw 1-1 with Portsmouth in a pre-season friendly in 1969 (I think). It was wall-to-wall fun in my teenage years.

Mansfield Town

only club EVER to win a final at wembley and then go back and smash their own town up...........sums it up really;) lol

wont be going there again.........been there too many times:cool:

i remember this. it was on a saturday december 12th in the eighties. sorry i am a bit autistic. big punch up when we were 2-1 down. 2 sent off each. batesy and colin lee sent off. their keeper was sent off too and keith cassells went in goal and was at fault for our late equaliser. brilliant. i was getting autographs after the game with billy hunt and andy sinton was boasting and even demonstrating to a reporter that he headbutted someone and got away with it. for some reason i always remember the reporter saying "we'll just put that you retalliated". ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Mansfield Town

A gormless bunch except for the bloke with the afro standing next to the goalie, which is priceless. Don't see him in the bottom picture - shame.

Was Kevin Hitchcock in goal for them that day??

Mansfield Town

I went there in 1999 and we got stuffed 3-1.

Mansfield Town

Another thing about Mansfield is that their main stand came from Hurst Park Race course which was near Molesey, Surrey.

Mansfield Town

their keeper was sent off
And he was fuming about it because he was about the only player not actually swinging punches at people during the fisticuffs.
I seem to remember Keith Cassells saving one jammily onto the post and looking like the last kid to be picked in a playground game when he had the goalies kit on. :D

The following is from memory, not record books, so I may not be 100% correct but here goes.....
As Hounslow Town FC reached the 1962 FA Amateur Cup Final they were given automatic entry into the FA Cup 1st round the following season. They drew Mansfield Town at Denbigh Road and were leading 3-0 with about 20 minutes left(no mean feat in those days for an unpaid Amateur side to be beating a Football League team)... However, Mansfield pulled it back to 3-3 and Hounslow had to travel up to Mansfield for the replay.
Mansfield won,I think something like 9-1,.....anyone else remember this...
Hounslow Town used to get regular 5,000 crowds then
