MA's Tactics

is anyone else f^&**in fed up with the way when we're 1-0 up with ages to go we try to keep the f$%^&n ball by the corner flag when a 2nd goal just might be the more sensible option:mad1: :mad1:

oh and another thing mr allen, when the other team gets a corner in the last minute another great idea which may, just may make a difference would be to keep at least one player up field just in case that ball actually comes out of that area........instead of some northern lump toe poking it through 337 players obscuring the view of our keeper in the 89 min:mad1: :mad1: :mad1:

maybe then we just might get the promotion US fans (not the players) so richly deserve:cool: :sorted:

sort it for saturday, or im gonna get cross........you dig:confused: ;)

MA's Tactics

I'd like to play to our strengths and keep the ball wide, especially now we don't have Lloyd to hold the ball up. Marcus can't do it on his own but I bet he'd love a few more crosses coming in.

MA's Tactics

I agree. Rhodes and Brooker have to play wide as they are our most direct attacking players. Tabb and Pratley need to be given the responsibility for the midfield. Drop the holding midfielder b***ocks, it only works if you've got the right player. Both Tabb and Pratley can tackle and work hard; they just need to make sure they cover for each other.

MA's Tactics

I think it is all ready generally accepted that the supporters of this club deserve promotion a hell of a lot more than the players and management. That is why there are already half a dozen threads covering this.

We won a £50k player from The Coca-Cola Corporation this week because the supporters 'kept going' until the very end. The fans never gave up and made sure that we had an excellent chance of winning the prize. If those who take the club's wages displayed the same attitude, we would now be promoted. Away to Huddersfield and the last two matches spring to mind where the lads have bottled it, and that is off the top of my head.

Teams that have a bad habit of conceding 'last minute sickeners' generally win nothing. If we end up winning nothing. that will be why - nothing to do with player sales or anything else.

lets kill games off, how many home games have we won by more than 1 goal? not many we always keep us biting our finger nails right till the death

MA's Tactics

...consistently have eleven men in the box at set pieces and still fail to clear..........................

MA's Tactics

it seems obvious to me but if we have 11 back they have 9 up (minus 1 defender and the keeper) or 10 up if its the 90th minute but if we leave 1 up they will have 3 back and if we left 2 up they'd have 4 back thus freeing up space in the box for 1 of our defenders to win the ball

MA's Tactics

We lost the POs last season as we went with an over cautious approach to Hillsboro IMHO. We haven't learnt and the experience for us fans and players at Huddersfield has dented confidence beyond repair when it comes to holding a lead IMHO.
Bradford was shocking but as only 300 saw it I don't think it hit home how
sh!t it was. 3-1 up and could have been 5 or 6 to 3-3 with a what we have we hold mentality. If you are p!ssing all over a side then carry on, don't give them a leg up to get back into the game.:nono:

Oh, and another thing martin, why not just let voice FTB take over the team as obviously he can get us into the play offs two years running...with the fans and not the players of course!

How the fukk do the players not deserve it? They have played the games.

MA has got us in the play offs two years running..in theory he is the scond most succesful manager at brentford for 60 odd years!.Holder got us promoted with perrymans team but then failed when he had to buy his own players but apart from that nobody has done better.

If we do pull of the possible but unlikely on saturday, or if we win the play offs then I hope all of you miserably w*****s go and support someone else.

It is disappointing to have thrown away a gift wrapped invitation to promotion but to keep going on and on about it every day. If we had not sold DJ we would have turned 4 home draws into 2 wins and we would be up. Unfortunately the goals versus sunderland put him in the shop window, end of! i didn't hear any of you lot whining after that game!

MA's Tactics

For what it's worth believe that the players seem to have temporarily lost belief in their own ability to finish, particularly at home.

Regardless of the fact that we are missing a poacher who will score goals for fun, we have proved that we can and should be able to score from anywhere on the park before and need to rediscover that ability.....quickly.

We had all the game against Blackpool and Hartlepool and looked in control and lively until the final ball or finish. Over caution when we should have been bombing on and getting a second cost us and whilst poor finishing has let us down, if we're in the opponents third of the field they can't score.

Whether the poor finishing that hasn't helped comes from fear of failure, nerves given the time of year or just lack of ability isn't important now.

What is crucial is that this week in training players are motivated and instilled with the confidence to be positive throughout, to get forward, attack the box, and get shots on goal. We've been top 4 all season and that's no fluke, we don't let in many but must create and take more chances.

Assuming the worst and we end up in 3rd spot and therefore the play offs I don't think I can suffer us playing negatively at home and defending for 90 minutes if we get a positive result away.

We've beaten everyone we're likely to meet in the play offs and we're good enough to beat all of them over two legs again if the tactics are positive again.

Please Bees play without fear and keep the oppo on the back foot defending rather than giving them time and space to threaten us.

The players don't actually deserve promotion themselves because, in the first instance, they have failed to amass 80 points - a bare minimum for any team seriously trying to win a promotion. That is not to say I don't want to see them win it, as it is surprisingly easy to become attached to a set of players. How many of us love Tabby, after all? We do have some fantastic players with a hardworking attitude (well, some of them do). But when they look back, they will see how much damage the two 'Pools games have done to them as of late.

As for your suggestion that all miserable w****** should go and support someone else, I'll leave the door open to some others to reply to that. :D

what i dont understand is why we dont leave players up wehn defending corners/free kicks... we leave 1 up they leave 2 back, we leave 2 up they leave 3 and so on... this would then reduce the number of players from the attacking team and less of a chance to score maybe !!! Have a word :sorted:

MA's Tactics

I think mhead bee has a point. Martin Allen has delivered more on field success to this club than any of the previous six managers. David Webb got us into the play-offs twice, so he's the last manager whose record stands comparison with Allen's. Allen doesn't get everything right and I would agree that we should be more positive when a goal up, but the venom, anger and spite directed in his direction is completely baffling to me.

This has been debated before, and was addressed by MA during his close season Q&A session in 2004. When he brought Barnet to Brentford in the LDV they had a corner and left 2 players up, the ball came out to Tabby and he whacked it in. MA said that he would not let that happen again

I think that whatever way you play it you have to remember to defend whether you are all back or just 9. We fell aslepp at the back and they took their chance. This was not MA's fault. I also believe the players made the decision themselves to run down the clock, a lot of teams do it and would do it when going into the lead with 5 minutes to go. Us fans didnt want to see it because of Blackpool etc., however we are not out there.

I believe MA should have waited until after the corner was taken to put Hutch on, this was in hindsight a poor move but hindsight is a wonderful thing so they say

MA's Tactics

we have won only 10 games this year by more than one goal. Promotion sides usually batter the opposition - remember Luton? Hull?

Also, 3 of those wins came in the first 4 games.

We have failed to beat 3 teams playing with 10 (or 9!) men (Blackpool away, Forest at home and Gillingham away (they even scored!)). And sneaked an 87th minute winner v 10 men Yeovil (who we allowed to equalise us against us) - oh, and Swansea even managed a goal with 10 men against us.

We have thrown away points that were "in the bag" (Huddersfield away! Bradford away. Blackpool at home. Hartlepool at home).

We have thrown points away in games we have dominated but not won (Oldham 3-3 at home. Port Vale 1-0 defeat at home in front of, what, 8,000 people?)

We have not kept a clean sheet for 14 games (admittedly we have only failed to hit the net twice in those games. But guess what, we lost both of those 1-0!).

In summary - we have just not been aggressive enough or confident enough. We should be 10 points clear at the top of the table really.

Someone suggested that we had conceded more goals at set-pieces than any other time in this division. Not checked it - but it sounds plausible.

Leave a man up at corners and set-pieces! someone with pace.

I am going to take my sedative now.

I posted over the weekend that while I had become resigned to failure after 35 years plus I still woke up on Sunday and after a cuppa and reflection was glad I supported Brentford.

I also said that this week we should forget what has happened thus far and be positive until we know the final outcome. I completely understand that we're all different and some true supporters come and vent their spleen and get the negativity out of their systems by posting on here.

What I can't understand is the same old keyboard cretins who seem to delight in having something to moan about and always know better and give the impression that they'd be happier when we fail as otherwise they'd have nothing to post.

We've had your £10 a game nonsense plus bonuses that you believe will attract hungry players, me thinks you've been reading too many kids football comics and have never been involved nor have any knowledge of senior football! Then you inform us that even if we achieve promotion the players and staff won't have deserved it!

To be fair to the team, and I agree with much of the criticism, we have the second best GD in the division, so margins overall must have been OK, and +20 compares very well with what I think was negative at this stage last year.

It's the sitting back when we go up that most annoys me; we don't need to push 8 or 9 up at corners, but could at least try to attack, and not sit back and give away free kicks and corners.

If we don't do it Saturday (and I'd guess we must be 4-1 or 5-1 against) play-offs will be hard with Owusu out and Rankin half-fit, but we've got to try to remain positive. None of the other contenders are in form - even Forest have had a minor hiccough in the last couple

Having seen all the teams play some once some twice, I actually think the best two sides I have seen against us this season have been Southend & Colchester, and they are currently 1 & 2 in the league. So maybe the truth is the best two are currently the top 2. :fishing:

We have really had to earn our wins due to going on the back foot too early, both home and away. This is not negative just my objective opinion.

MA's Tactics

As much as we all love MA for what a great job he has done, there still has to be question marks over his tactics! On Saturday we had just gone one up, Hartlepools heads had dropped, we were playing at home in front of 8000 bees fans against a team who were 3rd from bottom and we still decided to try and waste time with 10 minutes left! We had them on the back foot and should have finished it off! At Huddersfield after we conceded the 2nd goal, straight from our kick off we just wellied it down field to no-one just to waste time, needless to say what happened after that!!!!

We constantly hear about backing the players, MA should have more faith in them himself and trust that we can finish teams off when we need!!!!

Not wins but I can pick out a few fortunate draws.

We should certainly have lost at Colchester, if we had this would now be over.

We could consider ourselves a bit lucky at Barnsley, reasonably lucky at Rotherham and extremely lucky at Doncaster.

All games we should have lost.

Good post.

Like just about everybody, I was gutted on Saturday. I'd taken my digital camera to get some shots (of what I thought / hoped) would be a home win that may have seen us go a long way to automatic promotion.

I sat there wondering:

a) why do we concede late goals?
b) why don't we leave players up when defending corners / free kicks
c) why do we seem to sit back on a slender lead
d) Why is Ricky Newman our captain

This could become a very long list, but I'll stop it here.

Anyway, I nearly, very nearly, left at the final whistle - but I didn't. Because even though we'd mucked it up (yet again), I still had it in me to applaud the team (as they were applauding us, the fans).

And like you sonofobee - on reflection, I'm glad I support Brentford.

Re the comment that you need at least 80 points to deserve promotion. As it is quite possible that all 3 promoted clubs this season will have less than that, should we just write to the league and say that Crewe, Millwall and Brighton should be reprieved and given another season in the Championship?

It's just another Sweepyism, ill thought out, illogical rant.

Other classics from this poster you may wish to consider are

Teams giving away a last minute sickener usually lose. (Well I never)

or the innovative

Find players from lower leagues and tell them they're lucky to play for Brentford and pay them £200 per week. Alternative players on £10 per week basic plus £1000 per goal for the scorer and £300 per penalty save for the keeper.

i think Colchester can when they lost 8 in a row after losing to chelsea in the cup and having won 18 of 20.

as for away matches we shouldn't have won points in but did - Oldham for sure, and MK Dons away. Otherwise no. That still leaves us with a large net loss

MA's Tactics

MA's tactics, as I have stated elsewhere, are far too negative, defensive most of the time...especially when we take the lead in games. He doesn't use both sides/wings of the field effectively and @ GP we for 90% of the time seem to be ''Playing to Braemar''. There's no element of surprise with most of our attacks; ala the 2nd half on Saturday, when we kept playing the ball out to the poor Mr Rhodes who was thus heavily marked.

I think his tactics stem from the fact that he was a defender himself, therefore he's always more likely to be defensive minded than someone like Steve Coppell.

I also don't agree with him bringing players on to waste time in the last 5 mins or so...unless it's because someone is injured/has tired badly because otherwise it just upsets the concentration of the team.

And if I was in Whitbread's position with that piece of paper he holds during the game this is what it would say;

1) Man marking is key.
2)Be as positive with the ball as poss @ all times.
3)Use both sides of the field and mix up the forms of attack so that you keep the opposition guessing as much as poss.
4)When ever you get the opportunity/opening, run with the ball for as far as you can but know when you can't go any further and it's therefore time to shoot or release.
5) Always make sure that there's someone on the far post when we're taking a corner.
6) The best form of defence is to ATTACK!!! :sorted:

Mr.Allen was actually a midfielder. Did the much lauded Mr.Coppell get us promotion?

Oldham away was a definite one.. we were appalling, down to ten men and still won 1-0!! Fitz scored moments after coming on to groans from all the Bees fans!!

MA's Tactics

I cheered- it was a really well taken goal.

I think MA looks to be favouring one wing because the players aren't strong enough to provide us with two consistent threats on each wing. This was actually a problem for Coppell as well which was not really solved until Rowlands returned from injury- much of that season we had Hunt marauding down the left but eventually getting nowhere because oppositions realised that they could just put an extra man over either to cover the cross coming in or to take Hunt out because we didn't have someone on the right to switch it to. Sadly, those few games where we had both Rowlands and Hunt taking those wide positions were also those games towards the end of the season when Owusu and Burgess were completely shattered and our only option in the end of many games was to bring on the Trolley and let him foul up the chances that our wide players were making.

Arguably we could use Tillen and Brooker in this way but neither of them is reliable enough a threat- Tillen apparently in MA's mind is too inexperienced to be able to trust with that and Brooker, rare flashes of genius aside looks too lazy and drifts out of position too much. Hence putting variously Tabb and Pratley at times out wide (or indeed using Gayle in that role), which none of them can do sufficiently well to counteract the loss of presence in the middle of the pitch that this entails as they are that much better in central roles.

Perhaps it is MA's fault in not having been able to put the team together in the right way to give him that option- but sadly we didn't have the money to keep Hunt and I suspect that he didn't want to stay having asked for a move 2 seasons running before (and vindicating this by being a major part in Reading's record season).

MA's Tactics

I have lost count over past two seasons the amount of time we have been in the ascendancy, taken the lead, and failed to push on but instead sat back with negative tactics.

For example, bringing all players back for a corner is rubbish.
-You have no outlet when the ball is cleared to take possession, hence inviting pressure immediately back on.
-You have taken away any attacking threat - someone with pace can run at the defence and you never know what could happen - see Brooker at Swindon.
-Finally, by bringing all players back, the opposition defenders have no-one to mark and join in the attack. By keeping one or even two strikers/small players up, the opposition must leave 2 or 3 players back. If they gamble and leave a 1 on 1 / 2 on 2 situation, even more chance of a counter attack goal.

9 outfield players and a goalkeeper should be able to cover the penalty area for one corner anyway IMO.

Been said so many times but attack is best form of defence - unless Allen changes some of his negative (and often poor) tactics I really cant see him progressing very far in management.

Only one person to blame for this tactic JAY TABB after he scored two goals for us from corners against Martin Allens Barnet. After this Allen decided that everybody should be back for corners to clear the intitial ball and push out as a unit

I think if we go up on Sat that Martin has every right (a la Noddy Holder at Hounslow civic sh*t hole) to tell you all you REALLY know f**k all about the game at this level!
It's not a frickin computer game!
They work so hard to get everything right... but you all know better.

If we win promotion, whether that is this Saturday or via the play-offs, i'll be happy for someone to give MA a microphone and a transcript of Noddy Holder's rant. All that will matter in real terms is that we're up.

MA has done well since his arrival. This thread (and others) is simply another outpouring of frustration that has been continually building up since 1995, and I am not ashamed to admit my part in it. That is not a retraction of the view that negative defensive tactics have ballsed up the last two months of this season though.

If it is an outpouring of frustration since 1995 then why is it called MA tactics:confused:

Frustrations of a Bees fan then yes

Mr.Allen was actually a midfielder. Did the much lauded Mr.Coppell get us promotion?

If he was a midfielder...I bet it he was a defensive one. :D

Plus, he's not a very good judge of fellow midfielders then is he i.e. Mr Newman!

It doesnt take a footballing genius to realise that sitting back on a one goal lead with a jittery defence and a keeper prone to the odd flap for 30 minutes plus is not a very good idea...
