I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned elsewhere, but I thought that Somners 'performance' yesterday was the most singularly inept display from a Brentford player that I have witnessed ever. EVER.

Baring in mind how bloody slow he is anyway, for the first goal he gives the bloke on the right wing 20 yards start. If it would have been just the once I could forgive him, but to then allow the same thing to happen a further four times (from which they scored once) is absolutely scandalous. He was just following the ball - like a child would. It's basics, and if he can't even do the basics - he shouldn't be in the team. Especially when we have a good left back in Fieldwick on the bench.

I'm not being too harsh when I say Somner on his own cost us the game yesterday. He, along with Jay Smith are basically park players - I know they may be young, I know this may sound harsh, but they are both slower than the average male, let alone the average footballer, and that aint gonna change, no matter how much time or experience they get. You have to have SOME pace to be a professional footballer.

Matt Somner

Blame Ron

Who else can Wally play????????

Matt Somner

Fieldwick or Frampton. I'll blame Ron for running up huge debts, I won't blame him for the side we have on the pitch, because if we hadn't run up those debts we'd essentially still have a similar team on the pitch, just without those debts.

That's just a cop out, and unfortunately deflects criticism away from the players, and Wally. I've lost faith in Downes, to be honest. We got a bit lucky with a good start to the season. Since then we have descended into playing terrible long ball stuff. I can accept getting beaten if we at least try to play a bit of football (in fact as we did in the second half yesterday), but if we play long ball sh*t ... Why does he play 4-4-2 without natural wide players, and besides completely bypasses the midfield? Why does he not learn from his mistakes? Dobbo looked class in midfield - why not give him a run there? Peters looks good when he comes on - why not give him a try, instead of persisting with the front two we have? Why not play Kevin in the middle, where he can hurt teams instead of sticking him out wide? Etc etc etc. It's easy to blame Ron for everything (and would be nice), but I won't blame him for the style of play or the managers mistakes.

Somner certainly had a bad day at the office yesterday. However with inexperienced players around him I suggest that Scott Marshall should accept some responsibility for the total lack of organisation and the defensive shambles that we saw yesterday.

Pace cannot be taught, you either have it or you don't but if you have neither pace nor positional nous then you have no future in the professional game. We are well sussed now by the scouts reporting to the clubs who have us for their next game. Get the ball wide to a nippy winger who will either a) be on his own to create havoc or b) if by any chance there is a Bees player within 20 yards of him he zips by Dobbo or Somner (delete as applicable), waves goodbye to be polite, cuts in ,draws one of the centre backs and.................... Crikey this coaching stuff is easy ain't it???????? How do I get to Tolworth exactly?? rofl

Thankyou, you summed up what I was trying to say in my several paragraph rant in one sentence! :D

It's been a long time since I have looked through our squad, and more than just one or two players just aren't good enough (Somner, Fullarton, Hutchinson, Williams, J Smith, Hughes), with question marks over a couple of others. The good thing about Bosman is that there are going to be loads of players to pick from, and we won't have to pay them a fortune.

nb. (only because i'm feeling pedantic this morning) pace can be taught, both reaction time from standstill and pace over distance, plus tuition of correct sprinting technique will make you faster. however this can only ever amount to i'd guess two secs maximum over 100 hundred metres. its all about how mant 'fast twitch' muscle fibres you have in your body...... i'll stop there:rolleyes:

so how many times have you seen Hughes play? He's got a great cross when he plays for the reserves, he's a tall powerful lad. When he plays for Downes, he's stuck in the middle helping out the full-back and looks slow and laboured. Who plays all the players out of their position? Downes!

The strange thing is, when he was in charge of the reserves, they played great stuff (that's most of the 1st team now), so why are we playing like a bag of sh*te? i don't know, i haven't got a magic wand. But surely it doesn't help, when half the players don't know what they are doing on the pitch.

When we win we are the best team on earth, when we lose, it's always someone's fault. I think we are average, but the boys are young. It just looks like all the skill is being coached out of them.

We aren't a very good team and we have never been, I despair at the 'football' played at GP, I'd rather see and exciting game and lose 4-3 than roll over and die (vs Tranmere and Cardiff, et al)

Matt Somner

I'm afraid to say that Matt Somner was the weak link in what was clearly a third division side playing Wycombe yesterday.

With only two players in the "elite four" present (Paul Smith, Sonko, O'Connor and Hunt), you could see with your very own eyes what we have left if any two of the above were to leave.

It is easy to slag the players off though, but I admit that I was on a 9.5 yesterday for telling the likes of Jay Smith, McCammon and Somner exactly what I thought of them. However, the fact is the average age of our players is around 21, and the average speed and technical ability of our players is well below that of our rivals For this, you can only blame one person - Ron Noades.

The last owner to totally destroy our squad was rightfully removed from office. Accept none of Noades' propoganda - it has cost our club nearly £6m to have the Silver Parasite around, and the team is only marginally superior to the one that got us relegated in 98.

Matt Somner

I cant accept the premise of laying the blame solely at Somners feet.
The fault lays with Wally....why on earth was Somner out on the left and not played in the centre with Frampton at left back?
The whole plan was reliant of Rowlands being able to track back and cover down the left...but Rowly is just wasted on the left hand side.
The error should have been rectified after the first goal but wasnt and so a further two went in from that side in a fairly identical fashion.
First half performance was inept and gutless to the extreme without exception.

Matt Somner

Okay, you might have a point with Hughes, maybe he's one of those with a question mark over his head. I've only seen his performances for the first team - maybe he's just not yet ready? I stand by all of the others on the list though. Again though, he doesn't look to have any pace.

I too despair at the style and quality of football we are seeing. Very negative. Route 1 rubbish. What is more annoying is that in the second half before the sending off, we actually played some nice stuff. I'm not saying I want to see 'total football', far from it, just mix it up a bit more.

I'd rather see us get beaten 4-3 playing football, than a succession of 0-0 or winning / losing by the odd goal in one, playing the way we are.

I have to agree with a lot of this as well. The fact that O'Connor is playing so well, having been taken away from his centre forward position, is a tribute to the sort of player he is rather than any expertise from Walley. Andrew Frampton, Matt Somner and Kevin O'Connor are just three players removed from their natural positions (and sorry, you'll have to ask Walley why left-back Frampton is suddenly a centre-back).

Another question having been at Wycombe yesterday is are our scouts actually watching the players before signing them? Judging by the goal shyness of Macca and Constantine - obviously not.

As I said, it's easy to blame the players, but every decent coach (most recently Forzoni) has been hounded out of the club.

Yes, Somner was terrible first half, but:

He's a right-footed centre-back.
He's played OK at left-back earlier in the season (although not well enough to get in ahead of Frampton or Fieldwick imho)

You have to blame Wally for not either a) calling him over and pointing out the error of his ways or b) bringing Fieldwick on instead.

Lay off Jay Smith as well, he won three times as many tackles as Hutch yesterday (or maybe more accurately, infinitely more, as Hutch won none). He's (usually) a decent passer, and he's a talented, inexperienced player who may make a talented, experienced one if given time. If he was playing alongside Steve Sidwell rather than Eddie Hutchison he would get the opportunity to develop without having to do all the work himself.

Matt Somner

i don't mind long ball. but you play that with 2 wide players who get the knock downs and deliver decent crosses from out wide. you can't play long ball playing a narrow 4-4-2 with 4 central midfielders.

Smillie/Holdsworth/Blissett (or Cadette)/Godfrey. At least when we had the ball everyone knew what to do with it.

Football is a simple game made difficult by managers and coaches.

Bees Utd, I'd like the manager's job when you take over.

Is everyone up for that?? rofl rofl

Yes you can lay blame at Wally's doorstep for not pointing out the error of his ways. As I said earlier I lay quite a lot of blame with Wally for the way this season has gone.

BUT for christs sake what was going through Somners mind, he let it happen once surely if he had half a brain he must have thought "I must get tighter on that right winger, as it's only going to take a ball over the top and I'm f*cked". It's basics and if he can't even get the basics right . . .

Sorry disagree with you about J Smith. Each to their own and all that. No pace, poor distribution. Not quite sure what he brings to the side. Earlier in the season I gave him the benefit of doubt. He comes after Evans, O'Connor, Rowlands & Dobson for one of the central midfield berths. He's a better bet than Hutch & Fullarton though, granted.

I agree with Matty D but also think that it's time we went back to basics with the team selection and by that I mean playing people in their correct positions.

Somner must never play left back again. I also think that lack of pace ultimately means that full back is not Dobbo's ideal position but we are not exactly flush for right backs. For the remainder of the season we have to play Dobbo and Frampton at full back and then whichever 2 of 3 are fit out of Sonko, Roget and Marshall. If all fit leave Marshall out because he wont be here next year and we have to have one eye on the future. Roget may resign-who knows.

In midfield again we need to look to the future of who will be here next year but keeping one eye on the need to create something. That means there should be places for Hunty and Rowlands if fit. The remaining places have to go to Steve Evans, Kev O C and Fullarton who will be here next year. Until at least 4 of those 5 are fit then Jay Smith deerves to keep his place. We cannot afford to play Jay Smith and Eddie Hutch in the same team, the lack of pace that combination creates is alarming.

Up front, we know that neither Vine nor McCammon will be here next year and also that their "partnership" doesnt work. We therefore need to give a chance for the rest of the season (suspensions permitting ) to Constantine and Peters.

For next year it is time for Wally to realise that we need some pace in the side at the back. He needs to get in a young pacy right back which will release Dobbo to play in Midfield where he can possibly remain as Captain.

If we can then keep Frampton, Fieldwick, Sonko and get a replacement for or keep Roget then the defence will be OK. Midfield too if we can replace Rowlands and we will also need somebody who can play wide to replace Hunt (or preferably keep him).

Up front, well........... we need inspiration and a proper loan signing from the start of the season.

None of this need cost fortunes but we need to ensure we are not cast adrift at the foot of the table from the word go next year or the 3000 crowds that will result will kill the club off.

This season has seen Wally show a disappointingly lethargic attitude to loan signings and we cannot afford him to be as laid back next year. If the team is not performing we cant wait 6 months for it to be rectified. We will not be that skint that we cant bring a couple of loan players in, especially once Marshall, Anderson and McCammon (the three highest earners) are off the payroll

Matt Somner

As head of the "Matt Somner fan club", I object to your criticism ;)

He's a central defender and played well there pre-season, at left back he's easily undone by the ball over the top, especially when the other team is on the counter.

Matt Somner

jeez, he had a 'mare !

Did Somner play yesterday, it's only that he wasn't where he was supposed to be !

Pure basic schoolboy cr@p error, not once, but twice in the space of a minute  Where were the others to tell him to f*cking well get to where he should be ?

Wasn't he at fault for the fourth "goal" as well ?

He gave the ball away in the lead up to the fourth goal I think, didn't he?

It was indeed basic schoolboy crap, and happened on 5 occasions in about a 20 minute spell.

Matt Somner

How about this for our potential first team next season assuming that the players I believe will go actually do so and taking into account that listening to club announcements so far NO out of contract players have resigned or even been offered new contracts

This also does not allow for ANY signings - hopefully wrong there !

Julian

Dobson
Frampton
?
Fieldwick

Traynor
Tabb
Evans
Hughes

Peters
Blackman

That team would be relegated by Christmas. It worries me that the club Management may be tempted to start with a squad like this and only strengthen it when we have started an unstoppable losing streak.

Any reason why you have excluded O Connor and Fullarton and Jay Smith though?

Matt Somner

Because I have seen nothing published that confirms that their contracts extend beyond the end of the season.

Hope I am wrong in 1.5, OK 2 of the 3 cases !!

full agreement with Matt there, Somner's not a full-back and obviously struggling (i missed yesterday but he has been poor the last few matches at full-back) and Jay Smith clearly has good potential and i can't see why you'd criticise him individually when he's doing a good job in a midfield that's struggling

Good to see people supporting the young lads tho :nono:

Matt Somner

I detest people who shout abuse and slag players off at games. It annoys me no end when people walk out early, particularly when we are losing (10 minutes before the end yesterday). It also pees me off when the fans don't clap the players off at the end of the game, whatever the score. I can put my hand on heart and say I never do any of the above. However you should be able to express your opinions of players on here.

Jay Smith is a trier, but I honestly don't think he's going to make it. Somner is an average centre back, and an appalling full back. If he gets a good run at centre half then maybe he will make it there. He's currently fourth in line behind Sonko, Roget & Marshall. I'd also say that Frampton is a better centre half (and left back than Somner).

Matt Somner

Thomas Bathurst said:

I'm not denying you your right to express an opinion, but my opinion is that it's way out of line to criticise Jay Smith, and that it should be remembered that Somner has done well this season considering how often he's been played out of position, and that it's only recently that he's started to really struggle. The players' confidence must be piss-poor at the mo, especially Matt's, and things like this won't help him at all. To say he delivered the most inept performance you'd ever seen and to accuse him of playing like a child or a park player, is not a useful opinion to express, in my opinion :)

Matt Somner

That post about our potential team next year was a bit pessimistic...how about:

P Smith

(new right back)
Frampton
Sonko
Marshall

Fullarton
O'Connor
Hunt
Dobson

Peters
(new striker on loan)

that wouldn't be relegated by christmas!

Somner has done well at Centre Back. You're right. What really annoyed me about his performance, given that he is a defender, is that firstly he didn't learn from his initial mistake, in fact the same thing happened 5 times. I could have totally forgiven him if the first goal was the only time it happened - but the same thing occurred so often it was amazing. Totally unbelievable. He was standing a good 20 yards from the right winger, looking at him, time and time again, and every time chose to stay put. You'd be peed off with a pub player for making such elementary mistakes so often.

As for Jay Smith I was hopeful he might make it, but we have seen him 20 odd times this season, and I can't see what he brings to the side. He's one of those I really want to do well, but he lacks pace and his distribution is poor. I'll be delighted if he comes good. However given the amount of players that will be without jobs in the summer, you can guarantee there will be players that can offer a whole lot more than Smith does. Will Wally pick them up though?

Matt Somner

Wasn't at the game yesterday so I can't comment on it.

Lack of pace is a real problem for several of our players - Somner being one, but Dobson is really slow when turning - good when the ball is in front of him.

The Jay Smith baiting seems a bit harsh to me - He has had some decent games this year.

Hughes won't make it - he is far too slow to be a professional - how Downes can't see that I don't know.

Staying up this year will be a success.

Given the standard of our squad and our style of play I think our crowds have been good this year.

As things are going at present I would be suprised if we were not relegated next season

Matt Somner

I'm absolutley not saying that people shouldn't ever criticise players on here, just that bad as Somners performance was you have to ask what the manager was doing in keeping him on given that he seemed to be struggling to work out what he should be doing at left-back and we had a left-back on the bench who's looked OK when played.

And basically I like Jay Smith, I think he has potential, although I'd be the first to admit he gets bossed about by more experienced opponents at the moment. In a central midfield where there's a lot of competition for places Fullarton is at an age where he's unlikey to improve, I don't think Hutchinson will improve much, but I think Smith will.

Its an opinion. I could be wrong, and I've got no problem with people who don't rate him, I'd just ask who they'd play there instead (Dobbo would be an option I suppsoe).

He is what should be classed as a left sided defender. He did play as many games at centre back for C.Palace as he did left back.
We do seem to have a few problems at present, but people should remember that many of these young lads have played 40 games this season, compared to their previous 20 for the reserves or youth teams. Many have played tuesday & saturday for much of the last two months. We are now have very key players out which are just not replacable at present. 6 or 7 points will see us into a position not many thought we would achieve before a ball was kicked. Lets get behind the boys this coming week, when 6 points is possible.

Matt Somner

You are right Matt, I agree and said earlier that a lot of the blame lies with Wally - it just worries me that a player could consistently make such a basic mistake - regardless of the fact that he shouldn't have still been on the pitch. Once is forgivable, twice is annoying, but heh, he's only human. However three, four & five times is just . . .

I tend to agree with virtually everything else you have posted, now and in the past. I don't want to sound like a sycophant, but I always look out for your posts, as your views are often spookily similar to either what I have been thinking or what I have posted! However Jay Smith is one player we definitely disagree on. Hope you are right about him though, and I am wrong!

At the moment we don't have anyone else we can play there unfortunately - however once we have Hunt & Evans back things change. I'd like to see Dobbo in CM, but again it leaves us in the position of not having anyone to fill in at RB apart from . . . . Somner rofl

It's not fair to have a pop at the same individuals who did so well earlier in the season.
The bottom line is they are all very young, inexperienced and naive and are now struggling in a losing side.
They are, probably more crucially, knackered.
We are suffering because no striker was brought in a month ago - goals not only win games but also take a lot of the pressure off the rest of the side.
I believe Wally Downes when he says the right person just hasn't been available and hope there is no more sinister reason for the lack of transfer activity.
The one season in the last five we have had two or three good strikers in tandem we made it to the play off finals.
Perhaps someone never wanted us to go for the play offs or perhaps it was just bad luck and timing...we'll never know.

Ijah's positional sense wasn't the greatest. The difference though was that he had the pace to recover. Somner can't afford to give nippy wingers a 1 yards start, let alone 20!

Matt Somner

Erm, cheers Mr Bathurst!

I wouldn't mind Somner at RB, I've been unimpressed with Dobbo there this year and I think you're losing less by replacing him with Somner than if you replace Fieldwick/Frampton with him at LB. Either that or we find out if one of our young right-backs is ready for a bit of first-team action like we did with Fieldwick.

OF course if you accept that Somner and Frampton prefer to play at CB then we've got much more depth in that position than at full-back, so 3-5-2 could be a good idea.

I agree that when Hunt and Evans are back Smith may well lose his place in midfield, but I'm not sure how soon that's going to happen, and for me he's still ahead of Hutch and Fullarton, who waste possession far too often.

As the H has said he has turned in some good performances at sweeper, maybe another Mahon-esque conversion to be made....

Matt Somner

OK, I didn't see the Wycombe game, so maybe shouldn't comment, but some people's opinions are so frustrating! Somner has been poor recently, yes. But then Michael Owen had a bad patch, didn't he? Earlier in the season Somner was one of our best defenders, making countless goalline clearances and some great challenges and interceptions. He's never been played in the same position 2 games running. He's 19. He's knackered. And he might give up reading some of the stuff on here!

Jay Smith is another one. I'd have him down as my big plus of the season! And yet he apparentky isn't good enough to be a professional. Fact is, he's a defensive midfielder. He sits in front of the back four and shields. Then he plays it simple and lets other people get it forward. Poor comparison maybe but think Silva or Keane in the Premiership. Why do you think our defence has been so tight this season (bar the last 3 games)? It's not all Sonko! Smith could be a great barrier player, but with Hutch by him he's working with nothing - put S Evans/A N Other creative mid next to him and something might happen.

Lay off these guys - we SHOULD be safe. That's more than a lot of people hoped for this season, myself included. And next season these players will only be better the experience.

Matt Somner

In my opinion, the reason we have such a tight defence is down to the keeper, and to at least one decent centre half NOT down to our slow full backs. It doesn't bear thinking about our defence without these two.

You say lay off these guys, but then have a pop at Hutchinson - you can't have it both ways, or can I only criticise players you don't rate yourself?

to be fair, he's only played recently with the injuries/bans to Evans and Fullarton..

Fair point mate - I do respect your opinions, and I realise I'm being very hypocritical! I guess I feel that Hutch's performance is down to quality and some others down to form/tiredness.

I was just wound up by all the criticism for everyone! Apologies.

No problem. :) For what it's worth I think Hutch is cack too! I'll still get behind whoever is on the pitch though, and just either hope they improve, hope they are playing in a position that suits their abilities, or hope they are replaced for next season! :)
