So with the explanation above their all in it. To say I'm not impressed is putting it mildly. What other little side deals are going on. One that springs to me and always has, how few footballers are done for doping.
Must not upset the apple cart. There's money to be made.
So, not content with our star striker getting a lengthy ban, you’d like our owner to face sanctions too?

Were you previously unaware that MB made his fortune through gambling?

Matthew Benham

Betting is not illegal in this country. The FA cares about the integrity of football matches - ie not influenced by outside factors - so as integrity has been proven and everything here is transparent to the FA there really isn't a problem. This isn't about the morality of gambling so I don't know why this has been associated with it (just like the Ivan Toney case).

Matthew Benham

Were you previously unaware that MB made his fortune through gambling?
Yes fully aware. But did not know he can still bet on football games. I'm sure you didn't either. If players can't do it why should management be allowed to do it on the quiet.doesn't smell to good to me, hence the secrecy.

It's not being done on the quiet, it's done in full knowledge of the FA who have confirmed that it doesn't break their integrity rules. Do you think he'd take the risk of breaking the rules?

Matthew Benham

It's pretty clear Matthew has not done anything wrong at all so no story there. What is does reveal is the FA's willingness to agree secret deals they do not publish - not one mention of this agreement until now during the various player related issues - which could have brought into question whether the FA have rules for one and not the other. The whole gambling thing in football is a mess and needs consistency and reform.

Oh come on, you're just being obtuse. Regardless of whether any rules have been broken, the FA have hardly been transparent in this regard.

If they're going to hold football owners and football employees to different rules they should at least be open about it. And yes, it does raise wider questions as to what other deals go unpublished and why.

Regardless of how our owner made his fortune or whether you think this deal is right or wrong, it has been kept unpublished for a reason. Personally, I don't trust the FA to do the right thing on most occasions so transparency can only be a good thing.

Wow, Seems a little harsh.

Matthew Benham

I’m not sure why many of you were not already aware of such rules for owners. There was a headline story about it all from FA and Stoke City a few years back.

Out of interest what do you think smartodds have been doing for the past 10 years?

And where do you think Benham has got the money to sink £105m into our club over that same time frame?

The FA has been transparent to the point of having rules that seem to be regularly monitored, with annual audits, (I’ve not looked to see if the rules have been regularly updated or they’re independently audited as I can’t be bothered) so the only part that’s not “transparent” is the actual details of those rules. The probable reason for that is there may be confidential business information contained within the legal details. You state you "don't trust the FA to do the right thing on most occasions” and want to monitor the rules yourself, which is probably unreasonable for the reasons of business confidentiality. Although, there’s probably a useful clarification needed of whether only PL games are included in the ‘forbidden’ list or all UK professional leagues. Feel free to continue being outraged, though.

You read my two posts on this thread and thought "whoaaa, this guy is outraged"? ? lol ok...

History is littered with organisations that said "we can mark our own homework, we can regulate ourselves" but ended up doing the exact opposite. I've not demanded that the public be privy to forensically examine legal documents, nor have I even suggested that the FA have done anything wrong.

All I've said is that transparency is a good thing, and that stakeholders (in this case football supporters such as myself) deserve to fully understand what we devote our time, money and soul to week in, week out. What's your issue with transparency? You presumably think that the FA should be more opaque?

Matthew Benham

You presumably think that the FA should be more opaque?
Don’t talk nonsense. I wrote that I’d be interested to know if the audits are independent and to know how the rules changed over time. But, in truth, I’m not ever-exercised by it.

Out of interest i wonder how many other owners are involved in betting on football ? Tony Bloom and the Coates's come to mind.
These were the only others mentioned in the latest Price Of Football podcast. I cannot think of any others?

Whatever you say about Matthew, he is clearly a Brentford fan first.

He sat 3 rows in front of us at the b team game at Wingate and Finchley last Tuesday along with Cliff Crown.
That you Becks?

..............so Cliff Crown is clearly a Brentford fan first..............

I wonder where all the owners at a fans owned club - for example AFC Wimbledon - sit with the rules, which seem to expressly imply an 'owner' can't bet on on a football match that the club they own is involved in or the competition it plays in. Doubt there's much point Corals putting out the coupons in the Plough Lane branch as so many of the owner fans can't use them..... oh....

Football governance is in such a mess over betting

Yes to the last point and the country in general is in a similar mess over the subject.

Brent reservoir
Ironically, Brent Reservoir is the name of the striker we have been tracking as a Toney replacement for January.
Decent stats for Metz in League 'UN.
Good presser of the ball in the final third, can react well to pitch tilt.
French Mum, Irish Dad.

Cherchez le biro Phil !

I played for GWR v Brent at Brent Reservoir (Welsh Harp). We had a one eyed goal keeper called Mike Clive. He dived at the feet of their Centre Forward got the ball but the impact made his glass eye pop out. Their Centre Forward looked down and saw an eye looking up at him out of the mud and fainted. Mike just swore. Wiped the eye clean with spit. Put it in his bag and put an eye patch on to cover his socket for the rest of the day!

If he was any good he'd have caught it.
