Can anybody tell me if Mel Scott played for Chelsea in the 50's or 60's

Scott, Golf and Oxford

One of the best and most talented players to wear the red and white stripes but never achieved his potential. My sources sa it was his love of golf which was the distraction.

He and Gelson were a pretty class act at the time. Anyone remember Oxford at home in the sixties. We go 1 down, Chick Brodie off injured. Scotty goes in goal. I think there were no subs at this time so we were down to 10 men. bees romp home 5-1 and Scott pulled off a couple of Banks-esque saves.

I also understand that Mel Scott has passed away. Gone, but certainly not forgotten.

Yes I remember Mel, a man witha touch of class. I am sorry to learn that he is no longer with us I also remember Mike Block, can anyone tell me if he is still with us. Very good players.

Yep, the only reason he was allowed to come to us was that he had a problem with his minces!

Yep, I remember that game. I was about 9 at the time and my dad had to take me home when we were 1-0 down because I has stomach pains. He couldn't believe it when we found out the next day that we'd won 5-1: I was not popular!.

Although I was young I can remember that Mel Scott was a great player to watch - very elegant.

The photograph that hangs on my wall with Pride of place is the 4th Division Champions.The Bees of course.

Players shown are Ken Coote,Fred Ryecraft,Gerry Cakebread,Tom Anthony,Tommy Higginson,Mel Scott,Peter Gelson,Matt Crowe,Micky Block,Johnny Brooks,Bill McAdams,John Dick and George McLeod.

Fine players all of them,any would get in our team today although Paul Smith probably has the edge over Freddie Ryecraft who was later replaced by Chick Brodie.Happy days,I just got demobbed from National Service in October 62 to be met by the coldest winter on record (63).There was no games in January and only two in February.The season didn't finish until May 23rd,beating Workington 4-3 at home after being 4-0 at half time to win the Championship.

Where did Block come from and what happened to him? He was my hero in my early years of watching the Bees (because I also played No 7 in those days, at school). Terrific hard shot on him.

My dad came across Johnny Brooks quite a few years ago coaching a parks team in Bournemouth. Brooks was also a bit of a star. And that hairdo!

Brooks & Scott were probably in the top 6 best Bees players in the last 50 years. Both outstanding talents & extremely stylish.

Brooks scored 22 goals in our promotion season, including a hat trick at Gillingham - & he was the 'schemer' or 'mid-field general'.
A player who had it all but did not fit at the 'new' Chelsea where the emphasis was on 'one touch' football & came to us for a bargain fee. Capable of passing the ball with astonishing accuracy over 40 yards or more & with a hammer shot in either foot. He personified class in everything he did.

Saw Scott at Chelsea & just could not believe it when we signed him - & he lived up to my expectations. Particularly remember him completely dominating Ken Wagstaff of Mansfield (later Hull) who was an outstanding player. We were rumoured to be trying to sign KW & I believe that the history of the club would have changed if we had - similar to when QPR signed Les Allen & R Marsh.

Micky Block came from Chelsea, could play on either left or right wing, had a tremendous shot & very good dribbling ability - another class player who scored a lot of goals for a winger.

We were 4-0 up at H-T needing 2 more goals to make it 100 for the season. The second half didn't go quite to plan.

Mickey Block came to us from Chelsea. He was in their team due to two successive broken legs suffered by Frank Blunstone. When Blunstone finally returned Block lot his place. Many people at the time rated him as a better player.

Unfortunately like so many Brentford players he got injured and was never the same again. I think he joined Watford without success and drifted out of league football.

I first met Mel Scott at Hinchley Wood school, we were classmates and had lots of laughs,we even took the juniors for football Mel on one side andme on the other. I last saw him when I lived in Canada and he was playing for a team in America, Denis Violet was the captain of the team they were playing against in Oakland. Sad to say Mel had a heart attack and passed away while I lived in Canada, but I have fond memories of him.

I have had many memories of Brentford FC over the years, especially when Diana Dorsmade a film using Griffin Park when she was passed over the crowd.
Memories of Tommy Lawton, Wally Bragg, Billy Dare and George Francis.
I now live on the Isle of Wight so cannot visit my old stamping ground, but I always look for the Bees resultwhenever theyplay

Remember Diana Dors film well...Ealing Road end..even held her hand as they passed her over the heads of the crowd..fight then started between a soldier and a civvy...both claiming to bee her boyfriend...think the film was called 'The big Gate'..or something similiar...

"The Great Game".

I was at that match and Diana Dors stood at the back of the Ealing Road terrace with her then husband /Svengali/manager Denis Hamilton who kept a very watchful eye on how she was being "handled" as she was passed down over the supporters heads. She then finished up sitting in the directors box.

Mel Scott was quite simply the best Bees player I have ever seen. There were rumours that he was a Romany and rarely turned up for training but that never seemed to affect his performances. Also one of my favourites of that era and always gave us a laugh especially with a very sly punch in the ribs of an oppo full back was Mark Lazarus. Remember him giving me and a load of mates a lift home to Ealing after a game when it was p*ssing with rain.

Lazarus looked to be over the hill when he left GP but, like his namesake, he rose again and went on to play for for the, sadly, rather good QPR side which won the League Cup in 67. He even scored the winner at Wembley. I only saw Mel Scott right at the end of his GP days but he was a class act and one of our best ever signings.

Scott was the best player I have ever seen at Brentford by a long way and that was when we had an abundance of good players. Even Higginson looks good now.

I agree with the above post. Probably the best player ever to wear the famous red and white stripes. That half back line of Mel Scott, Peter Gelson and Matt Crowe was just awesome.

Sadly, it also makes you realise just how far this great old club has fallen over the years.

Matt Crowe another blast from the past signed from Norwich and was at one time on the verge of playing for Scotland I seem to remember. Another class act but fecking hard with it.

Spot on! Mel Scott was superb.....with Billy McAdams,Johnny Brookes and John Dick up front we were a joy to watch every week.

Brooks and Scott must be two of Brentford's best ever, but also a mention for Coote and Cakebread, both immaculate and never flustered.

Pretty sure he did. Not too many have made the "walk of shame" from Loftarse Road to GP over the years nor in the other direction but he did both. His last game at GP was, I believe, for Orient in a League Cup tie circa 1969 and a bloke behind me in the Royal Oak that day spent 90 minutes shouting "Oi, Tesco!" at him.

I was a kid standing behind the Ealing Road goal and I can still see it to this day. It was a 2 - 5 defeat to Brizzel Rovers and if my memory still serves me right he let acouple more in between his legs and under his fat body. He also pulled off two blinding saves in the same match. That summed Fred up and was neatly described in some newspaper report as being slightly umorthodox.

I think Alec Stock managed to sell & resign Lazarus 3 times whilst manager at QPR & made a very healthy profit from the sales.

Lazarus came from a boxing family (I believe Lew Lazar was his cousin) & could certainly get 'involved' if necessary. I remember a match at Gillingham - we lost 1-0 through a very untypical slip by Chic Brodie) - when there was a huge roar & a Gillingham player was left flat out on the floor. Never saw it happen but ML was in the vicinity!!!

Any one remember the 6-1 win over Carlisle & ML's goals & celebrations in that one? - not to mention an 'incident' with a Carlisle player.

Broke the mould with Fred...almost a legend...not quite though...lol

I think that little trick was in Fred's last league game for the Bees v Watford.

Guess who was in goal for Watford - an 18 year old Pat Jennings.

A week later Chic Brodie was signed - so it wasn't all bad.

Then again Fred sometimes played out of his skin, like the 62-63 promotion battle at Oldham where some of his saves were amazing. The Manchester classified green'un had a photo of one of his saves and called him 'cat like'

Fred was dropped for the next game and Gerry Cakebread returned after injury. And guess what? We beat Wrexham 9-0, with Dai Ward making his debut!!!

Fred played for the army I believe as he was a TA guy. I remember the Brizzle game so well my late elder brother who took me to games could not take it and we went to leave 4 times but each time we got to those steep steps leading from New Road down to Ealing Road exit (you know, the big gates by the snack bar) he turned back cursing and saying we would stay 5 more minutes . We stayed to the end and I cried on the way home. Similar to that humiliation by Luton (was it 6-2 we lost at home) when a pop group played on the pitch before the game and John O'Rourke got 4 for Luton. Sad sad walk back to Northfields to get the bus - oh by the way BRING BACK MA

I remember the Carlisle game well and they went up that season!! I also remember Mark Lazarus running over to the New Road side in celebration when he scored

I also remember Ian Lawther from the Lazarus/Mel Scott days. The Irishman always put himself about. Then came along Pat Terry. Seems we had our fair share of brawlers who'd rather fight than play football in those days.

Lawther had some skill too, he was strong and good in the air but had some ability - N Ireland international. Later had many years at Halifax as a centre half
