Middlesex CCC 2024

Starting as they mean to carry on.

Middlesex chose to field and Glamorgan have racked up 416-3.

Sam Northeast currently unbeaten on 223.

To be honest since they announced that they were playing some 'Home' games at Chelmsford I have become less and less interested.

Middlesex CCC 2024

Been watching a bit on live stream, mainly from behind the sofa. Very comfortable for Glamorgan, the early season help for the bowlers not in evidence. Long way to go.Great to have the cricket back.

Middlesex CCC 2024

Glamorgan declare on 620-3, one run short of a 300 partnership for the 4th wicklet.

Middlesex CCC 2024

The comeback is on.

By far and away the worst toss decision Potentially of all time. Throws Nassars bowl first in Australia well out the window ?
Thankfully looks like it’ll
Be a draw.

"Allow"??
That sounds like they've got some sort of choice, or can somehow affect the outcome!!

Can we stop using this Kookaburra ball. ?

Middlesex. Are. Wait for it. 502/2.

Middlesex CCC 2024

Spoke to my mate yesterday about the use of the ball and said to him obviously it’s less than ideal as most county games the first two have been stupid run fests.

I had an idea of using the kookaburra one innings and Dukes the other. You have to use one ball in the innings but as the fielding side you get to pick which ball to use in what innings.

May spice it up a bit.

Middlesex CCC 2024

Middx 1 ahead at the close. Looks like another draw.

? % behind this, I have been saying for years that Middlesex need to move from lords to move on. They need their own income but I am not really sure where they are looking to go to. I don’t know if Shenley is still a thing but no one can get there anyway, Radlett is out of county and other venues are schools or club grounds. Personally I would have liked them to develop and move to Southgate but again that is a proper cricket club with a great history so they would not move. Big decisions ahead

I actually agree with this as well. Always tenants isn’t a great thing. Let MCC get on with it. How great would it be to have a dedicated cricket stadium in the borough of Hounslow?

Feltham Arena is still undeveloped.

Plus I always thought the old Hounslow Cricket Club on the Bath Road was a decent site too.

100% with this. I played there a few times and it’s a huge area. Still really can’t believe that they went to the wall but they did pay out some big money to have vinod Kambli play there as well as Greg fat cat Ritchie. I believe that Kamblis matches were shown in India at the time!!

Andrew Strauss was part of a group a while ago trying to revive cricket at Hounslow a while ago but it never got anywhere. It’s a great shout Mark for Middlesex to go there

I know our community sports trust were sniffing around it a long time ago. Just seems such a shame for it to go to waste.

Middlesex CCC 2024

Good guys win by 6 wickets.

Middlesex CCC 2024

good win against a strong Yorkshire with Brook and Root both playing. Du Plooy looks a top signing.

Middlesex CCC 2024

Not big enough for a professional ground but interesting.

around 100 meters from where I was brought up.

Only went there the once when Brentford FC played against Thames CC in around 1969!! I think that Brian Turner and Roger Cross got runs but there was a good crowd there as I recall and it was great to mingle with the players as a 10 year old!!

I played a works game there about 40 years ago.

Middlesex CCC 2024

Big problem is that unlike most other counties, Middlesex don't own their own ground, so that most of the proceeds from (the very profitable) Lords go to the MCC.

There was a long article in the Sunday Times about this yesterday. Some extracts:

"External investment would be essential because Middlesex have recently been in dire financial straits, with irregularities under a previous regime culminating in the club being placed in 'special measures' by the ECB. To save money, Middlesex are not using overseas players this season.
In February, they posted a first annual surplus since 2016 of £131,000. However, their neighbours Surrey announced a profit of £8 million, in part due to their usage of the Kia Oval in south London, which they own, as a conferencing and hospitality venue."

"Reserves that once stood at almost £6 million have largely disappeared and a main sponsor recently pulled out. To save money, Middlesex are not importing any foreign talent this season."

"Middlesex have previously looked at developing sites at a former Barclays Bank ground in Ealing, [at Uxbridge Cricket Club] and at [Barnet] Copthall, but for various reasons the plans fell through."

"Along with Radlett Cricket Club, Merchant Taylors’ hosts a few Middlesex matches each season but neither is capable of being the kind of venue Middlesex would ideally possess; nor are they sufficiently central to draw 'London' crowds. In fact, in order to save on the cost of erecting temporary stands at either, Middlesex will this year controversially stage two 'home' matches at Chelmsford, the base of another neighbouring rival, Essex."

"A recent bright spot was the gift of a ground in Brentford from GlaxoSmithKline after the pharmaceuticals giant moved offices — the first ground Middlesex can call their own. It will be mainly used for the county’s women’s teams. 'It’s going to be a wonderful training facility and a wonderful opportunity to have summer camps,'" [said Angus Fraser]
(That last excerpt refers to the 4.5 acre playing fields at Swyncombe Avenue, which the ST says is in Brentford, despite it having a W5 postcode?)

Here we go.
