He did a job in front of the back four as a more commanding presence in the air than Kev. He also went up front on the right when Lee was launching out of defence in an attempt to stop the ball coming straight back, as Donaldson showed he is no hold-up man. Didn't work much, though, but it showed some tactical nous... we really missed Alexander at that time.

Miguel Llera

Was it Llera that wore gloves at Griffin Park? I remember standing at Ealing Road end seeing him make clear contact with the ball with his hands twice in the one game and getting away with it, and he did the same at Charlton last season. Always seemed to jump with his arms flailing around.

Good game overall last night, but can someone ask him to keep his arms to himself a bit more! Charlton supporting friend also mentioned it didn't go unnoticed at the Valley either.

Miguel Llera

Good game, nice to see that Uwes tactic passing the ball from the back looks a lot more comftable with llera playing the ball out of defence rather than legge! Before everyone who loves legge starts whinging i agree he is a quality defender but with uwe wanting to build from the back with tidy passing and controlled passing legge needs to drastically improve his passing and control as everytime lee roles it to legge there often seems to be a bad touch or a mis placed pass! Think Ko and Llera seems like it could be a very good partnership if he llera stops handballing and climbing all over defenders but seemed quite good.

Miguel Llera

some excellent long passes last night, very impressive :sorted:

Miguel Llera

There was one that most CBs would have hoofed forwards that he calmly rolled sideways to Adams. Two great passes to Weston too

Miguel Llera

Three of his sublime long-range passes to the wings last night really had me drooling. For the older supporters it was almost like watching Johnny Brooks again...

Tell me more about Mr Brooks , heard a lot about him from my older chums.

Miguel Llera

couple of good hollywood passes but i prefer Legge for his no nonsense defending and hes better in the air

Miguel Llera

A reasonable debut, only 1 game so harsh to takes sides at mom. Defensively looked ok, distribution was the highlight of his performance last night with 2 of the best cross field passes you are likely to see anywhere.

If we had a guy with the head of Legge and the legs of Llera we would have one hell of a player!

Johnny Brooks young man was one of the finest players to put on a Brentford shirt. I believe he played for England 2/3 times and if my memory serves me right he played for Tottenham and Chelsea. I remember him so well, and boy what a shot he had on him. He was part of a excellent Bees team in 1962/63 season. In those days forwards were not called Strikers. Have you heard of the terms inside right/left and centre forward? Johhny could not only score but set up a lot of goals too. He played alongside Billy McAdams (NI International) and big John Dick who we bought from West Ham for £17,500 i believe. All three just scored goals for fun. We went into the last game of the season at home to Workington needing to score 6 goals to make it 100 league goals for the season. At half time we were 4-0 up. Then bugger me Workington banged in 3 goals and in the end we hung on for the victory. 4-3 final result.
I still have most of the programs for that season. I heard from a collector that they are worth nothing these days.
Back to Johnny though, I wonder how many senior supporters think he would fit in with todays team. Maybe GeoffBee could answer that.

Wayfarer are you seriously asking whether a seasoned first division and England international could fit in with today's team ? Johnny was an inside forward which I suppose equates roughly to a modern midfield player playing in the front of a diamond formation. He would tear this league up.

Miguel Llera

Some contrasting opinions on here re Llera. IMO he is a quality player and the best we have due to his passing game. Only issue is that he doesn't have sustained pace although he looked quick over the first few yards. The concern I have is that he will undoubtedly establish himself and we will miss him after his loan is up. The loss of his passing game will be considerable although Eger can do a similar job but without the commanding presence.

Miguel Llera

Quite true - my favourite Bees player of the last 55 years.

In answer to Wayfarer, I think he would have been exceptional. He could make space for himself instantly, shoot with both feet from anywhere and his passing was sublime over any distance. It was a privilege to watch him play and a pity that injury effectively ended his career. He didn't in fact play in the final game against Workington &, iirc, we had a much weakened team out that night.

Llera's passing, whether short- or long-range, yesterday was excellent. He just seems likely to give away needless free-kicks though and had his arms all over the place when going up for headers. His ability to play from the back certainly contributed to our dominance yesterday, but I think Eger is the better defender. Legge and Osborne would still be my preferred partnership when all are available.

I thought he was very impressive last night and his distribution something of a revelation, three balls that Beckenbauer or Hoddle would have struggled to better. However I think playing against huge units like Odajaye and Wordsworth suited him, I'm not as sure how he'll fare against a nippy type and suspect he'll give away lots of fouls and pick up numerous bookings as he's like an octopus.

Leon has pace and seems to be improving every game so maybe long term a better option but Llera for me is a good short term replacement

The fact that we were up against huge units was one of the main reasons he played, and why Eger played on Saturday. Expect to see these two alternate as per the demands of the opposition.

Agree, I'd be happy if Uwe continues to pick players and tactics based on opposition and not just current form.

Just finished drooling at thoughts of that team - not only the three you mention but two great wingers as well. And not only the greatest forward line ever, but we also had a defence (wasn't Mel Scott the centre half?).

Would JB fit today? Yep. But even if he didn't, surely any sensible manager would simply drop the other 10 and build the team around Johnny.

Miguel Llera

Miguel was superb last night both defensively and going forward. He won all his headers and some important tackles. Lets not forget that he helped Adams through the game as well. Watching Llera demand the ball from Lee then either pinging the ball 60 yards with the accuracy of a sniper or playing the channel for Adams and McGinn was great and meant we could attack in different, unpredictable ways which obviously was hard for Col U to cope with. For me he was Man of the Match.

What Mig demonstrated last night was that BIG defenders can defend in the air AND pass the ball, the days af the big brute heading the ball 30/40 yards straight back to the opposition need to end if we want to become a serious promotion team. I would love us to keep him ;)

Great post, I really like Leon he wears his heart on his sleeve and gives 100% every game but Llera last night opened my eyes and probably others as to what is needed if we our to reach new heights.

Let's not go overboard just yet, hugely impressed last night but Charlton fans weren't too upset when he left and seemed to think he was capable of howlers on a regular basis.
Still happy we've got but suspect Leon will become a better player in time

Do you mean Leon willl improve or will be better than Llera. If you mean Leon getting better than Llera then i would disagree because Llera proved his class last night. He also showed a much superior footballing brain to Leon which means he can reach higher levels. Leon is a great pro and will be vital to our success but the days off defenders not being able to kick a ball are coming to an end.

Miguel Llera

.........Eger is also waiting in the wings.........

I agree with this. Legge is a class act and will get better.

I think Leon will continue to improve and become a better player and play at a higher level.
Llera is a decent league 1 player, given he played there for both MK Dons and Charlton and is surplus at Blackpool. No doubting he was great last night and glad we've got him to cover for Legge. Great full debut but don't think we've signed the next Hermann, Ivar, or Turner.

Leons quite a bit younger than Llera, he's only been in the professional game a couple of years and has improved a lot in that time. It's no bad thing that they are competing with each other for a place in the team.

If I can find the program against Workinton I'll paste it on here. Just bear with me for a few days. Not used to this technical stuff.

No they are not, Llera is only here because Legge has a long-term injury and I am sure that once Leon 's fit again Llera will return to Blackpool.

Miguel Llera

i remember him scoring direct from a corner at the Ealing Road end. Great.
Yes I remember that goal, think it was in the 3-1 win against Crewe, took it from the New Road side and curled it straight in.

Coming up for 50 years ago!

Absolutely correct! And it was a key moment in a battle between two promotion contenders.
To answer Nick's question earlier re Johhny Brooks I guess those of us who saw him play for Brentford would consider him a certainty for our current side, because of his shooting prowess, defence-splitting passes, dead-ball quality( he also notched 11 penalties for Brentford) and his sheer class. Having said that, though, he was never expected to put his life on the line in midfield battles ( Tom Higginson did that for him!) nor was he needed to help out in defence nor did he often have to risk himself in aerial battles. Football was so different in the late 1950's and early 1960's when Johnny Brooks was in his pomp. Our players of of today such as Llera, Douglas , Donaldson and co are called upon to be athletes and battlers as well as skilfull artistes and I take my hat off to those guys who succeed in those different aspects of the game. And when I see sublime passes from defence from a big fella like Llera I just can't help purring with delight!

Miguel Llera

Played very well against Colchester with some excellent long passes, and a good player to have while Leon is injured

I'm not so sure about that; if he does well in his time here and has the option of signing permanently, at 32 would he really want to go back to just being a reserve at Blackpool?

Hi Nick. If you and any others wish to find out more about the legend named Johhnny Brooks, there is quite a bit on him, under the 'news of former players' thread, including a link to some very rare footage showing him making his debut , in a very illustrious team, for England!:sorted:
