Millwall v Bees predictions
All the way from Kew Bridge down to Waterman's Arts Centre, on the frozen Thames the Frost Fair is in full swing.
Laughing children skate mischievously between the amusements and vendors as holiday crowds pass by the stalls, taverns and amusements that have sprung up on the thick ice. Bears dance, hawkers proclaim their "wonder cures", musicians play their jolly tunes, young ladies thrust their chilly fingers deep into the warmth of their furry muffs* and flutter their eyes at handsome young dragoons as they pass. It is indeed, a merry sight - straight off the top of a tin of Quality Street.
In keeping with the season, in the shadow of Kew Bridge, a group of reindeer pulled sleighs awaits the arrival of the glorious, high flying Bees and ready carry the squad down the river for the Millwall game. A huge crowd of supporters stands on the frozen river, equipped to skate down to East London behind the team.
And to add to the gaiety, nice Mr Singh - Proud Tasty Christmas Snaking Partner of Brentford FC - has set up a roast chestnut stall on the ice. "As eaten by Ollie Watkins" is his catchy tagline, and at £1.99p a bag, ie 10 small chestnuts, he's going gangbusters and raking it in. But, you know, to roast chestnuts you need a fire, and when you put something that hot on ice... well this is only going one way really isn't it?
Thomas and the lads turn up and prior to departure are on the bridge throwing branded merchandise down to the children below. Amongst the throng, Buzz-ette first catches scent of the chestnuts, then spots Mr Singh's red and white striped brazier. She fumbles in her purse for the necessary and glides over to the cheery, profit conscious entrepreneur.
Now, she's a big lass is our Buzz-ette and as she stands on the already weakened ice, an almost imperceptible groaning comes from below her. Then, as the foolish bee/girl chimera jumps up and down in innocent anticipation, the ice opens up beneath her feet. Mr Singh jumps back, but Buzz-ette and the brazier go straight down into the stone cold water below.
OMG!
The crowd looks on helpless. If they try to save her, they too will go through the thin surface. But, the Brentford squad is not just good looking and skillful, they’re bloody clever too. Under Thomas' direction, the lads quickly tie all their red and white "Farewell Griffin Park" scarves together, they then lower lightest member of the squad, Little Joel Valencia down towards Buzz-ette. By the time our fun sized Ecuadorian gets there, the greedy girl's antennae are coming up for the third and last time. LJV grabs one and Pontus, Henrik, Ethan and Julian heave them up to safety. Phew! Said and Bryan rub her down with some of the old brown and orange shirts and soon enough she's right as rain. The crowd all cheer like we've won the FA Cup. (we do that apparently)
And... down the river we go! The reindeer race along with their precious cargo of talent. A moist Buzz-ette rides snuggled up between Said and Bryan and a huge crowd of supporters skates along behind them. They sing as one: "Are you watching, Mark Warburton?" to the simple "ding dong" melody beloved by football fans everywhere. And in the stadium, the Millwall supporters know the writing today is indeed on the 'Wall - see what I did there?
Thomas hands starts to Zamburek and Roeslev and they fit straight in.
A gymnastic display by Benrhama during which he does a double summersault with the ball between his knees ends with him lofting it into the area for Jan to get his first goal for the club. Bryan dribbles round a defender twice just for a laugh and at one point Matthias Jensen passes with laser accuracy diagonally across the pitch from corner flag to corner flag - because he bloody well wants to. "Oh come let us adore him,” sing our delirious supporters.
