Missing Link - Ben Burgess

Blackburn Rovers' young striker Ben Burgess is set for a loan move to second division side Brentford.

Burgess spent last season on loan to Australian club Northern Spirit, where he won the young player of the year award.

As Rovers are well blessed in the striking department at the moment, Souness, like he has with Marc Richards, has allowed Burgess the chance to gain some first team football experience with a lower league club.

Burgess was attracting interest from Aberdeen and Carlisle United, but it looks like Brentford have beaten them to it.

To be or not to Bee 14 Aug 2001

ROVERS’ striker Ben Burgess is about to join Division Two side Brentford on a month’s loan.

Ben travels down to the capital today for talks with the Bees manager Steve Coppell and is expected to sign up for capital action.

The powerful hitman from Buxton spent last season on loan with Australian league club Northern Spirit. Here he was a great success, winning the award for Australia’s ‘Young Player of the Year.’

Having returned to England, along with his great pal and fellow Rover Stuart Howson, Ben has played a big part in the Reserves pre-season action. He headed the winning goal in the recent 1-0 win at Altrincham.

Rovers are currently well-equipped in the striking department. Manager Souness has already allowed another promising youngster, Marc Richards, to go out on loan to Crewe Alexandra.

They liked him down under

from http://www.northernspirit.com.au/

Northern Spirit striker Ben Burgess has been passed fit to end his one-year loan spell at Northern Spirit against South Melbourne in the final NSL match of the season at Bob Jane Stadium on Sunday.

Burgess missed the Anzac Day clash with Wollongong after failing to recover from his troublesome hamstring injury.
He trained with the first grade squad on Friday morning and pulled up showing no ill effects so Coach Mick Hickman declared him fit to play.

"I am delighted that Ben is fit to play," Hickman said. "He is a vital member of our side and if we are to beat South Melbourne, as is our intention, it will be easier if Ben is on the field.

"The boy has been great for us this year and to have him as part of the last game is important. It gives him a chance to play one last game and the club a chance to send him off.

Burgess will return to Blackburn in the off season with his future not settled.

Northern Spirit would love to have the Big Irishman back on deck next season but it seems certain Blackburn will keep hold of the 19-year-old and reap the rewards of his excursion Down Under.

"It looks like I'll be fit for the South Melbourne game and that's great for me," Burgess said. "I'm looking forward to the game.

"I have enjoyed my time at Northern Spirit and I want to have one last game before I go back."

Is this the start of our climb to the upper reaches of the english football league? Is this little known striker the force behind our rise to the top? Will the jigsaw of BFC all fall into place with all our players striving for the team and the supporters?
Are we on the brink of the good times?

I don't think I've ever been so pleased about us signing an unknown on loan!

Never a dull moment supporting the Bees, is there?

Missing Link - Ben Burgess

I'm really excited about this! Does anyone know what the connection with this player is or whether we've watched him? Hope he's going to play on saturday, he looks like he could get stuck into some 2nd division defences...

Do you mean you don't understand what the "stiffs" are? If so, they are the reserve team.

from Tribalfootball.com, an Australian "ones to watch in 2001"

Ben Burgess (Northern Spirit)

The big man from Blackburn has all the attributes to become a success in England when he returns at season's end.

Still only a teenager, Burgess is already a massive presence in the opposition penalty area. Has great timing and when in the mood can be unbeatable in the air. But that's not to say he isn't half-decent on the ground, either. Has proved himself on the deck with a couple of individual goals of the highest order and with the ball at his feet can make even his Brazilian strike-partner Alex Moreira look clumsy.

Definitely one of the great success stories this season and let's keep our fingers crossed that more clubs in Europe look at the Burgess model and begin sending over their best youngsters to toughen up out here in Oz

Missing Link - Ben Burgess

He could be the right man for the job. Let whish him all the best, and hope we can make the loan deal a lot longer.

Missing Link - Ben Burgess

S hI T , Did he write that ?

Sorry .I ( we ) are very happy to have signed him even on a temporary loan basis.Lets all hope he does the business for us and we can keep him all season with the view to a permanent signing ( free) Sorry once more

Missing Link - Ben Burgess

A new igning (even loan) gets everyone's spirits raised.

Who knows? He might do for us what Jermaine Defoe did at Bournemouth last season...and with the rest of the squad looking strong, weel, who knows??

Good luck to Ben Burgess and lets hope he and we each enjoy his stay at Griffin Park

Missing Link - Ben Burgess

Well said Rodbee.

Suddenly I am optimistic for the season and I'd never even heard of Ben Burgess until today!

Bring on the Vale and The Naarwich.

Am I dreaming?

Bear in mind this is a Brazilian playing in Australia!!

Missing Link - Ben Burgess

According to last season's PFA Footballers Factfile Ben is: "Tall and strong, he can act as a target and likes to spread play but also has a predator's instinct for knock-in goals".

Sounds like just what we need.

Do you think Blackburn would be interested in a swap deal with Markie Mac going the other way?

I was thinking, dangerous I know, he might have been signed on loan so he can play on Sat, but is really going to sign full time, Sign him on loan first because of the length of time it takes to do the paperwork, it would would not allow him to play on Sat. We've done this before, with Gareth Graham I think. Probably well wide of the mark but being bees we have to be opptimistic.

I can think of several ex-bees who have been great players for other clubs and the worst player for ours!!

Missing Link - Ben Burgess

Maybe, just maybe thats why Steve Coppell couldn't make a chat with the press saturday. He was busy talking to Blackburn officials and player, who are just down the road from Wigan?

Missing Link - Ben Burgess

He is good on Championship Manager for my Bees side, scores goals.

Irregardles of reports lets see what he has do on the pitch before we comment and lets get behind him.
