The Pakistani fast bowler who was banned for five years in 2010 could return to domestic cricket in February.

Potentially, he could make his international return against England later this year. Is this a case of he's done his time, he deserves to return or should he be left in the cold?

hope he gets back to the top. fantastic young bowler, made a stupid decision when young and paid a heavy price.

I agree. He made a stupid mistake. I felt he should have been banned for longer than he was but also believe Butt and Asif, whose bans expire then, should have been out for life, especially Butt.

He was simply brilliant,hopefully will return as good as ever.

He was 18 when SB corrupted him,he has done his time.

Agree with this. Did he not come from some village that's wildly remote and desperately poor, even for rural Pakistan?

I always got the impression he was very young and not at all worldly, and therefore an easy mark.

Saw him take the Aussies apart for a spell in a one dayer, then go off the boil. Clearly a massive talent who had a way to go to fulfil potential. At his age 5 years a huge ban and I wonder whether he can come back from it or has just missed his chance during key development years.

Served his time, deserves to be back in cricket, although his reputation has been tarnished, you just have to say; he was young and was led along by a person who should've known better.

No doubt he will have to put up with numerous calls of 'no ball' every time he bowls.

No doubt he will get it. I remember reading somewhere that the no balls were the first he's bowled in international cricket. In theory Asif and Butt could return but I don't think Pakistan want them back.

Good luck to him when he comes back. Was clearly steered down a very bad path by someone he looked up to, has served his time and should be welcomed back.

Amir wasn't a cheat in the way I would class people as cheats. He was influenced by older cricketers, who knew better, and persuaded to step over a line, bowling no balls, for the sake of money. A young man, only 18, who probably looked up to these more influential players and sadly went along with their bribery. He served his ban, which for a young cricketer of huge promise, must've been like hell, not being able to play the game. He admitted his errors too, something which the others never have, he deserves credit for that. Best of luck to him, but his name will be tarnished, as I said above.

I wonder what you think of English players who have 'cheated' in their own way? Atherton, Broad, Cowdrey and even the man himself, W G Grace was one if the biggest cheats in Victorian cricket!!

hmm... i deliberately avoided the "he was influenced" line... it was his decision, end of the day... on the other hand, i've always been of the opinion too that it wasn't the world's most heinous crime... he didn't get a life ban though, he got 5yrs for his mistake, which is a significant, heavy punishment, and still allows him a chance to come back. it's all such a shame, cos he looked like he was gonna become a heck of a player...

As a naive 18 year old, being asked by a senior Pakistan cricketer and later captain, Salman Butt, to do something illegal and for money, I would say that influence had a big part in his decision to go ahead with it. Pressure on a young player, from more senior players, IMO, played a part.

On the one hand he knew he was 'cheating cricket' (his words).
However, he claimed to be entrapped by the situation given contact with another dodgy character. This is from the interview with Michael Atherton I put in the original post.

He should have gone to the board when they asked him to do such things.

played a part no doubt, but i think some are letting him off a little easy by explaining it all as "well, he was told to do it, that's why..."

Agree. He could have been the whistleblower. He knew what he was doing. He wasn't the ringleader but he wasn't coerced. He deserved a lengthy ban.

Just seen the highlights and have to say those two dropped catches off his bowling looked very suspicious to me. Could it be that a lot of their side don't want him there?
