I sincerely hope you are here next season- the one ray of light after the arrogance of nelson and the incompetance of Masters. And you proved so many league 1 followers wrong. You deserved better than to be dropped.

I would not think he will be at BFC next year, would be great if he was though, but why would he stay when Fitz dropped him (obviously to save money) for Nelson which must mean that he was being paid by the game and therefore has not earned much since the return of Nelson. I am sure that his performance's for us since his arrival in December will have enough club's interested in him to get fixed up with a better deal than BFC can offer him!

Nathan, Jo, Charlie & John were about the only players week in week out who have earned their pay from us the fans this year!

As a way of thinking the money spent this year. I'm deluding myself that it's going into their wages.

There seems to be an awful lot of people who think that Nathan Abbey was some kind of goalkeeping God who nearly kept us up. I'm going to break ranks and say for next season I'd like us to try and get a non-league prospect who might have some re-sale value at some later stage.

:imwith: He did okay for us and had a couple of exceptional games but he has a history and was not plying his trade at Torquay this season through choice.

Not a long term goalkeeping solution IMO.

Alan Julian was voted player of the season at Stevenage yesterday :)

Masters is the promising young keeper with the potential to make us a few quid. The problem is it's too early for him to be first choice so someone like Abbey makes sense as a short term measure on a one year deal with the option to extend it

When I saw him play Abbey was solid and usually decisive, rarely spilling the ball from his hands. The only thing I don't like about him is his inability to kick from hands which sometimes puts himself under pressure. Given a choice between Abbey and Nelson as Masters' role model for next season, I think it's been highly disrespectful to drop the guy the minute Nelson is 'fit' as he kept us in the season a lot longer than either Nelson or Masters would have. He averaged about 1 goal conceded per game and iirc kept 3 or 4 clean sheets. Considering what came before and the defence in front of him, I think he did well and I would keep him for next season. Given the thanks they showed him by dropping him, it wouldn't surprise me if he left before he was listed.

While I don't think it's fair to label Masters incompetent, I do wonder how the season might have panned out if Nelson hadn't got injured or we'd signed Abbey in the summer when he was on trial.

The Millwall example was probably Masters' worst mistake, but I don't think the defence had any confidence in him for the best part of two months (which coincided with us not winning a game). When Abbey joined the change in the defenders was noticeable.

I'm not blaming Masters for this, though - it was the management that threw an 18 year old in at the deep end, which in my mind was a big mistake.

Agree. The boy's still learning his trade. Talking to the defence with authority and knowing when to leave and when to call comes with experience. He needs someone with experience and presence to look up to and get tips from. Not a bloody clown.

i don't think it matters claire.
there's no goalkeeper in the world
who wouldn't have conceded with he likes of
frampton, tillen, griffiths and o'connor protecting him

Isn't this what a goalkeeping coach is paid to do?

Nelson has conceeded 39 in 21 (1.86 goals per game)
Abbey has conceeded 17 in 15 (1.13 g.p.g.)

Last season Nelson conceeded 66 in 44 games (1.5 g.p.g.)

I think it says it all that someone who played about a third of all games this season was voted 3rd in the Player of the Year awards. We need someone with experience like Abbey who is solid, doesnt flap and commands the back four, bringing in an unexperienced non league keeper will be a mistake as a first choice and I for one would like Abbey to stay.He is a far better keeper than Nelly and Masters and for the wages we pay and position we are in, I don't belieive we could do much better....plus the bloke obviously wants to play for us, he was there for the preseason friendlies and came back to the club again when he signed week by week! :sorted:

Speaks volumes, Nelson isn't actually that consistent as a keeper. Abbey isn't exactly old for a keeper and seems very professional.

I would have thought that the best reason for keeping Abbey is that 90% of his kicks don't end up in New/Braemar! As we're likely to fit straight into the league 2 style of hoof ball it might be nice to have a keeper who can kick straight and distribute the ball well.

We all thought Ashley Bayes was a disaster, but he forged a successful career as a lower league 'keeper - perhaps Abbey is just the same, a competent goalie who made some howlers in his early career?

Given how bad we were, the fewer games a player played the less he could ruin his reputation: I think Jamie England made the fewest mistakes so he should have been in the running

And isn't it possible for a club to save money if it has a player/coach?
Besides, you still need an actual keeper playing to look at up close. Masters would benefit greatly from watching and being able to hear Abbey in a game, not just video highlights or verbal descriptions from someone who's over 45 and a bit creaky.
