Nathan Elder

Shrewsbury Town fan in peace here.

It seems many of our number are not all happy with our acquisition of Elder given his performances thus far.

http://blueandamber.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=60517

Any chance of assuring (or worrying further!) us that we have not totally wasted our money?

Good luck for the season and hope Hunt is playing well for you.

He is a very hardworking player, will chip in with around 10 goals a season.

Just read through the thread on your site and have seen a couple of people saying he is not winning many headers. Remember the lad missed nearly half of last season through a broken cheek bone (correct me if i'm wrong).

He was getting into some sort of stride as well prior to that injury.

Give him time and he will do a decent job for you and will work a dam site harder than that Fat C*nt Holt :sorted:

Nathan Elder

Thanks BeeHomeSoon .... could you elaborate on what kind of trouble he was getting into?

Thanks

Nathan Elder

I assume Shrews fans were expecting Nathan to fill the gap left by the departing Grant Holt ?

Whatever your thoughts on Holt as a person, Nathan's got a tough act to follow if he's being seen as a replacement for him. You'll get bags of effort and committment from the big man, plus 10 - 15 goals a season if he stays fit and is fairly treated by referees, but I'm afraid he's no substitute for a player of Holt's ability.

Nathan Elder

Oooops - think Holt ran the most miles of any player in what was your league last season!

Nathan Elder

Andy Scott has had a result

Nathan Elder

Thanks BeeHomeSoon .... could you elaborate on what kind of trouble he was getting into?

Thanks

He had a terrible period durnig the season which involved two shockingly poor refereeing decisions, one a sending off after about two minutes against Notts County (?) by that obnoxious little c*** Stuart Atwell and another harsh sending off against Gillingham which meant he missed a fair few games.

Having got back in the side he was then on the end of an horrendous challenge from Rotherham's Pablo Mills which left him with a fractured cheekbone and a temporary loss of sight in one eye. There was a suggestion he wouldn't be able to see out of that eye again, never mind play football, so you need to be patient and give him time to work his way back to the kind of performances we know he's capable of.

Nathan Elder

He was getting a reputation - undeserved - for being a dirty player who led with his elbows. That joke of a referee Atwell sent him off for an accidental collision that led to a 4 match ban which was on the heals of a more deserved 3 match ban for a scuffle at Gillingham. After that, every referee seemed to penalise him and then he got a horrendous injury when he get his cheekbone smashed in an aerial collision. Again, I believe his reputation preceded him and that contributed to the injury.

He's a young lad learning his trade and had a very tough year so his confidence won't be at its highest but he has potential. Anyone of your fans who thought that a lad with 50 appearances was replacing someone who you paid £170k for needs a reality check.

Given support and coaching, he'll do a decent job. He'll never be a massive goalscorer though although if you let him take penalties as well he might get up towards the number of goals Holt scored.

Nathan Elder

Thanks all - hadn't realised his disciplinary record was as abysmal as his play

Nathan Elder

...............every time he played, he either got a yellow or red card so it seemed, and he got bugger-all protection from referees........AFAIK, the only sportsmen who get up and go again after such a horrific head/facial injury are NH jockeys, or boxers, both of which have no brains; Nathan is neither, and it would be understandable if his self-confidence has taken a bashing; give him time, he'll do a good job for you.............

forgot to say that Petr Cech is still wearing that helmet after being clobbered by Stephen Hunt those years ago..........Nathan had the same sort of injury..............

He is not a bad player. Ten goals a season in Division 4.

Is a 'handful'. Play generally is Ok. Lacks sharpness in front of goal.

Nathan Elder

Too slow to run at defences. Too short to be a target man. I think Div 2 will be his highest level.

Nathan Elder

The Emile Hesky of the lower divisions IMO. Won't score 30+ but without him I doubt Charlie would have scored as many as he did last season. Will do well when he gets his confidence

His record is not as bad as it may look, referees didnt do him any favours,
a guy who will give 100%, but not sure what effect a very serious facial injury will have to his confidence, I dont expect him to be prolific in front of goal, but then he has scored mored than Carl Cort!

Nathan Elder

I have an instinct that he will respond really well to some support and just as badly to you getting on his back. He has the heart of a lion and with some tlc will give you some good times.

Thanks folks for all your input to the question.

He has been total pants regretfully for us thus far - including costing us 3 points at Barnet. No control, jumping in midfield to head the ball and not even making contact, no pace, no channel running, and certainly no muscle - totally anonymous and am afraid useless nd clueless.

As you will see from the thread, conference player at very very best thus far.

As you point out he has replaced Holt - in that he is the only person we have spent any mpney on this summer - cast offs for us lol - and thus his performance is going to come under great scrutiny.

He will also be the symbol and butt, of the club's downward turn in its aspiraration - i.e. swapping Holt for him, over the coming year.

The fans will get behind him of course as will any fans, if we see qualities which have been mentioned, but at the moment ...erm a liability.

Thanks again for all your input on him

With all due respect, you need a reality check.

Norwich offerd in excess of 400k for Holt - a player that would have scored less than a dozen league goals last year if it weren't for penalties, and almost none away from home - that's too good to turn down.

You spent big last year, comparatively, but bought poorly and now have to come into line to make ends meet. It's not so long ago you were non-league and just because a new stadium has appeared does not give a divine right to progress on the pitch.

A player with as little football as Elder will be woefully out of form but with perseverence and patience he will be good enough for the top end of League Two, at least.

You need to play a certain way to utlise Elder and have the players to make the most of him - my opinion would be that if he doesn't do the business it's more poor management picking the wrong player for the squad you have.

Nathan Elder

The tone of what you've said and certain comments such as "he'll be the symbol and butt of the downward spiral of the club" would suggest that he probably won't get a fair trial.

Bearing in mind that, to my knowledge, we weren't actively looking to offload him before you made the offer that you did, he would undoubtedly have been part of a progressive squad in the League higher.

He's got parts of his game that need improvement but, providing you play him with a striker that compliments him, he's good enough to help to get you towards the promotion spots as he did for us last year

Yes, I don't diasagree with any of what you have written.

Asking about the player - as you quite rightly point out - when you dig deeper brings the whole strategy of our (any) club into play too.

Let's try and forget that, and concentrate on what he has to offer as an individual player (and I have seen his last 5 matches for us) and lack of heading ability, energy, and ball control. surely a requisite for hold up play are the only things we have witnessed.

Put money on us to go down guys!!

Nathan Elder

He use to drive me nuts. Charlie Mac would chase every lost cause and more often than not manage to get the ball into the box, and where was Elder when all this was happening? Standing on the edge of the box watching rather than taking a chance and getting himself between the penalty spot & the six yard box waiting for the chance that would have come his way. That aside, a lovely bloke.

Having not seen you, it's impossible to comment but that doesn't sound like the Elder that played for us.

Or the player named Man-of-the-Match by your fans on the first day of the season

I'm sure he'll do the business for you but he's not Grant Holt.

Nathan Elder

A very decent, likeable League 2 player.

Give him a chance before you slate him - 8 or 10 games, and you will see his value to the team.

Nathan Elder

You thought the future was rosy, your chairman loved the Sky cameras and told everyone how promotion was the aim and you started well. You scored goals and your defence was tight but suddenly the rest of the league began to realise that you were pretty poo and very beatable. Simpson went mental and bought in Dunfield for money:eek:, Ashikodi for a joke and played Riza, Chadwick and Moses with Holt as and when it pleased him, which in turn pleased us greatly. Coughlan was a good CB but the bods next to him were poor, Ashton and Sheriff was average LBs at best. You fluked the POs, shouldn't have been in them, somehow beat Bury and played like waankers against an average Gillingham side. It was Chadwick's turn to not impress and then be released the next day.
You spent too much money and had to sell or let players go and replace them with more realistic signings, Elder popped up and has joined a club on the slide after a season and a half of playing Great Expectations and will no doubt be a scapegoat for your manager's and chairman's failings. It didn't feel right with Shrewsbury being the big spenders last summer, it feels normal for them to be 4 down at HT so tbh normal service has been resumed. You might not like that and Elder doesn't seem like he will like it or be liked for it.
Good luck.

Nathan Elder

Elder was the kind of player that divided fans while he was here.

Some castigated him for not scoring enoigh goals, not winning balls in the air, being lazy, being unable to control the ball and fouling.

Others, myself included, saw him as a player who helped create chances, won most of the high balls, ran almost non-stop and had the heart of a lion, was reasonable at controlling the ball, ran quite fast and was forever being climbed on and fouled.

One of my favourite players over the last year or so.

It's been five games FFS :banghead: I'm sure you've had other new players before who've taken a little time to settle into the side. If nothing else, the fact that fans of his old club are so quick to jump to his defence should be an indication of his popularity here and you don't become popular by being sh*t.

Nathan Elder

He'll do well for you, unless you get on his case.

He's still young and learning his trade. And he's a target man, not a channel runner.

The problem at Shrewsbury is not players like Elder supposedly costing you three points, but the fact that you had a bit of spare cash after moving to the new stadium which your club couldn't spend quickly enough.

You underachieved last season, and now the blame is being shouldered on the present outfit.

On the other hand, some are. It's actually rather like reading our board, even down to the racial question. Are you sure you're not Bees who just happen to wear blue and yellow?

Nathan Elder

He will never be a good as Grant Holt who i think is a quality player but Nate does have a lot to offer. It aint pretty or technically impressive like someone said earlier he is a Emile Heskey type player. He hasnt played loads of football and probably needs a bit of time to settle in but he willbatter defences and win the areial battles. mazy runs and cheeky skills probably not.

Nathan Elder

Give him the chance to settle in and he will do a good job for you. He was a creator of making the opposition worry about him being in their penalty area, and as a result, others scored more goals than they would otherwise have done. Unfortunately, you appear to have a number of supporters, like we had, who couldn't see the value he put into a side when playing.

Please could other bees fans come on our board and confirm our worst fears about Elder?

What pants he is.

Wish we could have transferred him to you - dire and anonymous - we hate him already!!

It seems to me from reading that thread that one poster - Peter Broadbent, any money that's you - hates him, the rest are making reasonable judgements after a short time on a man who wasn't with you for pre-season and went six months without playing 90 minutes.

Whoever Peter Broadbent is he (or she) obviously has a Grant Holt based fascination that will not be cured easily.
