New Contracts

If Willock was a 21 y-o on low wages, I'd say to give him another year as he might improve and wouldn't be too much of a burden on the wage bill.

But he's older, with a few years as a pro behind him, and I guess he's on above average money by our standards, so I think he has to go. As others have said, he seems a nice bloke, he tries hard, and is probably a decent athlete, but his ball skills are minimal and he almost never looks like scoring. I'd take him ahead of Shipperley, Wijnhardor Onibuje, but that's about it.

New Contracts

The main question for me is if we release Willock would we really want him playing against us for one of our rivals next season. Say him and Easter were upfront together for Wycombe against us I personally wouldn't be happy. That much pace and power would batter any League 2 defence IMO.

He won't go into non league football IMO and will stay in League 2 possibly League 1.

League 2 defenders are pretty shocking in some cases and a player who's got pace power and height would make endless amount of spaces for a player like Ide to run into. It's not always about scoring goals upfront, it's also causing the defenders lots of hassle and making spaces. If we had 2 Ide type players upfront it just wouldn't work.

The honest question is are we going to do any better for a similar price? I honestly think we'll struggle to find someone and Willock will be good for us in League 2, I admit he's not been great during the last year so it's maybe worth giving him a last chance this season. Great guy, great work ethic, just needs a bit more confidence.

If we do find something better for cheaper or the same amount then I'm all for that option but think we should have someone in mind first. They need to be big and powerful and quick IMO.

New Contracts

There is no way Willock would get another club in League One, no way.

I would be prepared to consider offering Willock a contract on vastly reduced terms, heavily incentivised, as our third or fourth choice striker. Those players next year will not be on a big whack anyway.

I think we could do worse as back-up than Willock.

I would certainly not even entertain giving him anything over £500 a week and couldn't argue with those who want to get rid. If we are relying on Willock to fire us to promotion next year we're in for the long-haul in League Two.
But I do think we could end up with far worse.

Do we know for CERTAIN that JK has signed for another club...If not,TB must pull out all the stops to get him on a longer contract.

"Pulling out all the stops" means offering a contract that BFC cannot afford I suspect. He's signed for someone elsewhere so let's concentrate energies on finding another striker.

New Contracts

Fair enough mark,if thats right ,then i agree we should move onwards to find another gem like JK.....

He didn't do it in League Two for Peterborough, so what makes you think he would do it there for anyone else. He's still to find his level and Christ alone knows what MA was thinking when he shelled out £50k on him.

I guess it's a hunch mainly.

Everyones main gripe with Willock seems to be he doesn't score nearly enough goals for us. I think his record is 1 goal every 5 or 6 starts since he's been with us which is not great. I don't particually think he's ever played in a good positive Brentford team who are playing really well, but I don't think Willock is the cause of this.

I must be crazy as I've been quite impressed with his overall contribution when he's started a game. He wins shed loads of flick ons, is strong, quick can hold the ball up and actually pick out a pass or 2. I'd also add he constantly closes defenders down when they have the ball and has a high work rate until about the 70th minute whens he's shattered.

I can remember him setting up about 3 or 4 goals this season in a season where we've struggled to score hardly any. He has missed a few sitters this season but has been able to get in positions where the chances fall to him. His finishing hasn't been great but his other play has been quite decent I think. A bit of confidence and he could be a useful player to have around IMO.

He's been a bit of a scapegoat with many this season which is harsh considering he's only started 17ish games and a handful last season.

I'd like to see some of you call him Pillock to his face ;) :)

You must be watching a different player to me. I don't remember him setting up any goals to be honest and the 4 he has scored for us in 23 starts and a further 18 appearances as substitute have so far cost us £12,500 each.

He is absolute pony and if we offer him any sort of contract at all it will be the first mistake of the Butcher/Scott partnership.

Or on drugs, or even a preacher.

He set up 1 for Kuffour against Chesterfield, 1 for Heywood against Gillingham, he won a penalty early in the season. He kind of won the penalty against Port Vale. Judging a striker on sub appearances is never that fair IMO. All his goals came in games he started.

The amount of abuse he's taken this season considering he's only started 18 games is harsh. He's the takes the most flack along with Brooker when we've accepted such poor performances from Shipperley, O'Connor, Frampton, Leary etc and played them almost every bloody week when they've been fit.

When he's played the guys tried as hard as anyone else on the pitch so it seems a little harsh the abuse he takes.

From memory a certain Andy Scott used to miss loads of sitters before he had that very good season.

The thought of 2 yet to be identified strikers next season playing upfront together scares me a little considering we won't be able to attract any as good as the ones we've had this season(Exactly!!!) (assuming Ide goes that is)

PS I'm in no way related to Willock, just feel peoples reactions are way way way over the top towards him on here :)

Surely we can do better than Willock - and at a cheaper price.

Strikers who don't score goals need something else about their game. (as he didn't score at all from November until the meaningless last game of the season, I think we can safely put him in the non scoring category !).

Maybe the missing asset he has that we have all been searching for is that he puts himself about a bit and uses his height and frame to unsettle defenders. You only need to look at his tally of 1 yellow card this season to see that doesn't stack up either . Even Brooker has 4 yellows !

callum willock is following in the brentford tradition
of great strikers being sold and replaced by
hopelessly inadequate journeymen

john o'mara-stan webb (immediate relegation)
dean holdsworth-murray jones (immediate relegation)
nick forster-joe omegie (promotion thrown away)
dj campbell-callum willock (promotion thrown away-then relegation)

i don't believe the signing was thought out in any way.
it was just done in a last minute panic to appease angry
supporters

indeed i recall MA compounding the felony with
the laughable assertion that willock was better than campbell

Willock

You judge a player on what you see and what he delivers.

Willock hasn't been good enough to hold down a regular place under four managers in fifteen months. Not good enough in a good team and not a regular in a team that finished bottom (that's enough said with the stats above)

From what I've seen and echoed by many supporters on here, he does not have an eye for goal and never anticipates anything in advance especially in the area.
When he scored his first goal at Swindon away last season it was a surprise to him as much as the travelling support.

If he stays, its on a vastly reduced weekly wage and related to a goals scored bonus top up (pretty safe on the budget at least :D )

Think he will be packing his things and heading towards a conference club near you this summer.

the joe omigie comparison is stretching it a bit lol

i could be wrong, but i think you'll find that the evening after we sold forster to birmingham we lost at home to colchester with joe omegie upfront

:imwith: and just as equally caught between two stools.....I don't think he was good enough for League 1, but I can see that he might have found his niche in League 2, which may lead to bigger and better things for him and BFC......and I absolutely dread the return to GP of any former striker, because you just know that he'll score.....

If we do it will be a gamble on someone who's never played at this level or a striker who's out of contract but doesn't score goals, much like Willock.

New Contracts

So that's 50% of his goals in his "career" at Brentford. Not the greatest line of argument tbh.

Apologies sir, my post was aimed at this season but I seem to be wrong about Gillingham.

The first game after we sold Forster was away to Stockport County and we won 2-1 I think you will find!
